Really Flakey Skin

Karcheer · 25/11/2020 17:55

In the last few weeks (probably about 6) my skin on my face has got really flakey, it seems to get worse on days when I wear a mask, but is always flakey.
I've used Tretinoin for about 9 months but I did pass through the flakey stage.

Ive been using CeraVe Lotion for a long time, it stings when I apply it (it always has).

I'm 47 and I would say Peri-menopausal.

Can anyone recommend what I can do to help my face.

Thank you.

Interesting, where is the flaking? Whole face or just in the mask area? How often do you change/wash your mask? Also, does the flaking coincide with colder weather in your area? Does it feel like your skin is really dry (ie tight, itchy etc) or does your skin feel normal but just flaking more?

I never had luck with CeraVe unfortunately, the stinging progressed to worse stinging and red splotches - but I remember it being on the lighter side. If your skin feels dry and uncomfortable would you consider trying something like heavier La Roche Posay Toleraine or Khiels ultra facial cream? Apply it while your face is still slightly damp and let is soak in.

If your skin doesn't feel dry maybe introduce a very gentle acid a few times a week to help exfoliate your skin.

It's just around the area where the mask is, I use a fresh mask each time.
It's not tight or itchy, I dont even realise until I look in a mirror. But it's fairly big flakes.
I never got on with La Roche Posay Toleraine it did make me very spotty but maybe the Tretinoin would stop this now.
I have a gentle acid I will give that a go too. Thank you.

I've recently started having very dry skin, not quite flaky but not far off. I've started using the B. stage 4 at night. I am using a face cream that I did a trial for, the only thing I know about the it is that it's from M&S

@Karcheer I'm on 0.025% tret. I mix my Cerave with The Ordinary Rosehip oil in the PM. Cerave used to sting my skin and not be enough but mixing it with Rosehip has stopped the sting and is super moisturising.

Karcheer · 26/11/2020 17:34

@goose1964 ive never heard of the B?

@Ohjustboreoff that's interesting, Ive heard so many good things about The Ordinary, Ill google what Rosehip oil does, thank you.

I had really bad eczema (probably contact dermatitis)
a few years ago and the only thing that didn't sting was savlon, and it cleared up fairly quickly.

Hmmm if it is around the mask area OP I would consider what you're washing your masks in and switch to something gentler/ensure they are being rinsed out very thoroughly.

I wouldn't think it's worth sticking wih cerave if it stings and isn't preventing the flaking. I really recommend aveeno or Eucerin 5% urea facial cream. Neither are extortionate and I always fo back to them if my skin is excessively dry.

Jojoba oil as a first cleanse or a few drops in your moisturiser or direct onto the face is great. Make sure you're cleansing with something enriching, balm cleanser or cream cleanser etc. I've just switched back to Liz Earle and am enjoying it.
