Anyone who buys more expensive clothes?

Do you do this because you are quite well off or do you think it's more statement and worthwhile.

I love some Self Portrait pieces but I'm struggling to justify the price. Would happily be up for some convincing...

thanks

Self Portrait as in £350 for a polyester dress?!

Designer price tag but you're not paying for decent quality

I buy certain things from what I consider more expensive shops, because I know they will suit me and last well. I’m talking Cos, Whistles, Other Stories though, not designer prices, also Levi’s. I am wide of arse and small of waist, so tend to spend more on bottoms than tops, and these stores work well for me. I have a bit of a Depop habit and often snag bargains on there.

I don’t often go to posh “events” (or anywhere atm!) but would be reluctant to shell out for a really fancy frock I wouldn’t wear many times. I am quite interested in the idea of hiring clothes.

The things I’ve spent a lot of money on are things that won’t go out of fashion or will last a long time.

I bought a black cashmere jumper once and it lasted me for years.

I always buy expensive shoes/boots because they’re so much more nicer and comfortable.

The most I’ve spent on is a Gucci cross body bag that I’m guessing will last me forever.

I buy a real mixture but I think I have a really good eye to identify excellent items on the high street. However, I tend to spend a lot of money on coats, I’ve just bought a £600 shirt puffy jacket. It’s in a different league to anything on the high street, it looks amazing and I’ve had so many compliments. I’ve also discovered expensive bikinis but paid about £30/40 on the Outnet. Who knew that a couple of triangles could be so different, I’ll never go back. I buy dresses too on Outnet especially for work or parties. I also spend money on handbags. Not all high end but just fantastic quality, I don’t buy expensive jeans though, M&S are amazing as is their cashmere

I would but frankly I'm too fat.

Craftycorvid · 25/11/2020 22:32

Recent convert to ‘statement’ clothes (that statement often being ‘how much?!’) I like Toast/Oska/Peruvian Connection - but buy mainly on eBay. And some things are still pricey second hand. 😬

Purplecatshopaholic · 25/11/2020 22:45

Yes I do for certain things, and/or certain designers that I love, eg Vivienne Westwood, and Rick Owens. I like to mix it up with high street pieces to get a more unique look. Funny how some pieces just evolve into favourites regardless of where you got them too, like my Sainsbury’s TU leggings for example.

kittykat35 · 25/11/2020 22:49

A mix of both I suppose, I buy things I like, for quality and price per wear.

Zenithbear · 25/11/2020 22:51

For me the expensive things worth paying for are:
Jackets, coats, boots, bras, jumpers usually cashmere, wool/lined/tailored skirts, bikinis, fitted shirts, watches.

Cheaper things not worth paying a lot for as for me they are just as good as the expensive version:
Leggings, t-shirts, jeans, sandals, things for special occasions, holiday/summer clothes, dresses.

I don't buy many items of clothing but when I see something I absolutely love, I'll have it whatever it costs because I can afford to. It is rare though, so I splash out maybe a few times a year. Those things tend to last and last and get worn until they drop to bits so cost per wear are always worth it.

theorangesisters · 25/11/2020 22:56

I buy most of my clothes and shoes secondhand, for the sake of the planet. There is so much choice and a lot of it is barely worn - it means that I can afford more expensive brands.

RickOShay · 26/11/2020 09:22

Oh @hopeishere you are my spirit friend

hopeishere · 26/11/2020 17:50

@RickOShay LOL!!

It's depressing! Marina Rinaldi anyone?! Grin

Othering · 26/11/2020 17:54

@thedevilinablackdress

What do you mean by expensive? What sort of price range? I'll work more for quality and something that I know I'll wear a lot e.g. a waterproof coat. But less on say a top for going out
She's kinda told you by giving Self Portrait as a reference point.
YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 26/11/2020 18:08

Buy well by once for pieces I know are investment.

So, cashmere jumpers, Duberry boots, Burberry trench, silk shirts from Theory, Icebreaker thermals, Ugg boot slippers, Rab walking jacket, Max Mara full length coat, Jaeger Pea coat, Paige and 7 For All Mankind jeans, Russell and Bromley loafers or Chelsea boots etc etc. Some bought full price, some in sales, some second hand. I really like The Outnet for bargains and also their own brand Iris & Ink for classics with a twist.

I always buy high price sunglasses as I lose cheap ones (I have pairs over 10 years old).

High fashion? Zara all the way.

LunaTheCat · 26/11/2020 19:23

I buy natural fabrics, good quality Clothes - I will check out trade me and wait for sales.
I don’t live in UK but I have ordered toast and Brora online - Brora cashmere I always buy in sales but I recently bought the wool fair isle cardigan (and it is a gorgeous thing indeed )but will need to stay in wardrobe until our Southern Hemisphere winter.
I take things to be altered at dressmaker.
In NZ love - kowtow , Nisa for undies, Juliette Hogan ( mostly in sales), standard issue knitwear.

hammeringinmyhead · 26/11/2020 19:32

My coats are Burberry (camel wool), Diesel (parka), Ralph Lauren (navy rain mac), and AllSaints (leather jacket) and I recently splurged on Grenson boots. As a former footwear buyer I do not wear cheap plastic or reformed leather shoes. However I do own a few Sainsbury's checked shirts and almost all my jeans and leggings are from there. I guess for outerwear I go quality, and outfits underneath, quantity.

Floisme · 26/11/2020 19:45

I love beautiful well made clothes. If I could afford to, I'd wear Margaret Howell every day, with a dash of Vivienne Westwood. As it is, I buy a lot of second hand and I've missed being able to do that lately (if it's second hand I like to buy from a real shop, not online).

About once a year, I blow out on something new and expensive - sometimes an item I've been stalking or sometimes just something I see and love. This year it was some Solovair for Toast ankle boots in the sale.

I'd do it more often if I could afford to and no, I don't feel guilty about paying decent money for beautiful things. I feel more guilty when I buy cheap clothes.
