Could you explain highlights to me? And do they cover grey?

I'm thinking about getting highlights but I'm confused about the options of full head, half head and to section. I have grey coming in on the top front of my head. Would highlights cover that or would they need to dye that separately? What highlights would be best?

I will talk to the hairdresser beforehand about this obviously, but I'd like to sound like I have a vague idea what I'm talking about at least Grin

What colour is your hair naturally?

OutingMyselfAgain · 25/11/2020 09:48

It's medium to dark brown

My hair is a similar colour and I have three colours run through it to tone the grey in. My natural shade of brown, a caramel blonde and a bright white blonde, then of course my grey. It works really well on my naturally colour hair.

I am now looking at going a really bright grey. Ive been getting carried away looking at beautiful older women and imagining myself looking exotic and carefree lol.

I'm in the same boat OP, considering highlights to deal with the greys but worried it won't even catch all the greys so seems a waste of money/time?!

Then having a block colour over it and highlights as well just seems overkill? And £££?

At the moment I do a home job of dyeing the grey bits with a little bit of dye mixed up but soon I'm going to need a better solution

I have some grey hairs (mainly around my temples). I find that highlights (half head) catch them all and last for 8-10 weeks.

KittenCalledBob · 25/11/2020 10:14

I have them in the same colour (dark brown) as my real colour.

Thanks everyone.

I was thinking of going for silvery blonde highlights. I think I'll just book a half head and see what she says.

@Bbub I am terrible at home dying, that's why I'm thinking of making the change to getting it 'done'. I can't do it myself without ruining the bathroom.

Just wanted to suggest that when you ask for highlights that you are really clear what type you mean i.e. very thin ones or something else and get the hairdresser to explain exactly what they are planning. Probably take photos of what you like.

I have had highlights for years and they were always thin ones (I asked for highlights and this is what I got and was happy with- from different hairdressers as well).

Then when I went to get them done after the first lockdown, I had to see a different hairdresser as my previous one had left. The highlights she gave me are incredibly thick and stripey and, even worse, have a huge blond bit at the front that just makes it look like I have even more grey hair than I actually do against my darker hair.

I have a full head of semi permanent under my highlights, in a similar colour to my natural hair, then highlights are on top of that. When my roots grow a bit and I need greys re covered, it’s the semi permanent one that I need to get touched up not the highlight

I have highlights, am naturally a brunette but have had it dyed lighter as I've aged. Imo, the highlights are supposed to blend the grey regrowth, so it's less obvious but it never seems to work like this 🤨 I can still see the regrowth which irritates the life out of me!

However, the alternative is to stay dark & the result is the same - I still see grey coming through quickly - unfortunately I'm blessed with very fast growing hair!

Or, go grey which I'm not quite ready to do yet...

If you are not too grey you will still get root line with highlights.
