How does everyone keep warm outside?

I remember last year actually thinking I was going to die from being so cold. I got stuck on a London tube for 2 hours and the driver turned the train off so the heating went off too... then I still had another bus journey to work. The bus wasn’t due for ages and I remember back to that time dreading the cold winter. I go out in a coat, scarf and gloves... it’s not enough 😣 waiting for that second bus is torture at 6am. It’s so cold outside during winter and I’m genuinely thinking about taking a blanket out with me 😂

How do you all avoid freezing? Obviously in the minus region, that’s when it becomes unbearable.

Invest in some uniglo long sleeve vests I also have a big blanket scarf

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 24/11/2020 23:42

I’m WFH just now, but live in NE Scotland, and usually walk to and from work, 30 minutes each way, so yeah, cold. My tips are:

Sheepskin insoles in all footwear
No gaps! I wear a lot of cropped trousers, but in winter wear knee-high socks underneath. Always tuck something in round my waist/back
Cashmere beanie hat - no seams so doesn’t cause hat hair
Sheepskin gloves - I bought mine in the John Lewis sale a few years ago, and they were still expensive, but they are so warm

Like pp I have the Uniqlo thermal tops, but I find they can be too much in actual work - brilliant for working from home though. I have a selection of blanket scarves, faux fur coats for dry days, and a big hooded parka for wet days. I have also learned over the years to buy decent knitwear - alpaca, mohair, wool, cashmere - instead of cheap synthetic stuff. I really like &otherstories, and often pick up jumpers on depop.

You definitely need a hat. I have a thick woollen one with sort of knitted pigtails, which I know sounds weird but is actually very lovely and keeps me really warm. You lose much body heat from your head.

MojoMoon · 24/11/2020 23:47

Warm feet - sheepskin lined boots. If your feet stay warm, that's half the battle.

Insulated coat - down or eco-friendly alternatives. doesn't need to be an full duvet coat.

Merino base layers

altforvarmt · 24/11/2020 23:47

Snowboots. Plus everything Judy said.

grassisjeweled · 24/11/2020 23:49

Really good boots, thick insulated sole
A North Face Parka
Mittens
A hat
Preferably layers underneath : tough if you're working in a centrally heated office

altforvarmt · 24/11/2020 23:50

Oh, and pop a couple of Hothands handwarmers in your bag, for when it becomes truly unbearable, like your train journey.

PucePanther · 24/11/2020 23:52

You lose a ton of heat through your head. A hat keeps you warmer than anything else! I often find if I wear a hat I’m so warm I don’t need gloves and might even have to unfasten my coat.

RoseMartha · 25/11/2020 00:01

Layers
If i know i am going to some kid outside fun place and i will be sitting on a damp bench i will put on long sleeve t shirt, thin jumper or cardigan then a sherpa kind of thing lined hoodie then a winter coat then gloves and scarf and pull hoodie over my head for a hat. Hats and me do not mix well, just dont suit.

Then if I get cold i will move about and have hot drinks.

Great question OP as I’m always half frozen in winter! Thermal vests and heavy duty outdoor coats are my allies but not enough!

earsup · 25/11/2020 00:42

Am warm and comfy with my thermals underneath but still not that cold here in London..plus layers so can remove items if needed...hat and gloves also worn...plus scarf if coat doesnt do up to the neck.

thesoundofthepolice · 25/11/2020 00:47

Layers to keep the heat in.
Nothing too bulky so I don't look bulky, but a vest, long sleeved top, cardi or fine knit jumper and then a decent coat. 2 pairs of thin socks and decent gloves.

I can't wear a hat because I look like a potato but I always have a big scarf that I can fluff up round my ears.

I find keeping my core warm keeps the rest of me feeling ok.

Separatedandabitsad · 25/11/2020 00:50

I wear a hat & if changes my world

Mintjulia · 25/11/2020 01:01

A decent coat designed for really cold outdoor pursuits - skiing or shooting jackets are good, or a down coat.
Boots with thick soles and linings, plus ski socks for really cold days. Silk lined gloves (Dents web site). Hat. Snood or scarf.

If you work in a cold office, layers, long sleeves, long skirts over thick tights.

tabulahrasa · 25/11/2020 01:09

Electric bodywarmer

CausingChaos2 · 25/11/2020 01:19

What’s your coat like? Try one from an outdoors shop e.g. Cotswolds. I have one from there and it’s so cosy.

I always have a base layer in winter, often thermals, then knitwear on top.

Nat6999 · 25/11/2020 01:36

Thermal socks, I like Heat holders ones, Ugg type boots, fur lined leggings, thermal long sleeved top, jumper, thick parka typed coat either feather & down or borg lined, thermal hat & gloves, again I wear Heat holders ones & a big scarf to trap drafts down the top of your coat. I suffer from Raynauds & am always cold, I've just bought some fur lined jogging bottoms from Asda, with my thermal socks, long sleeved thermal top & a big hoodie I am just about warm inside, otherwise I need the heating on at least 25 & everyone else is sweating.

AdoptedBumpkin · 25/11/2020 13:15

Lots of layers, a big coat, and a substantial hat, and also a snood if necessary. Sometimes I still feel a bit cold!

supercee · 25/11/2020 13:18

I've just bought a Jil Sander for Uniqlo down cost and it is the warmest coat ever. That and a cashmere beanie and I was cosied up for a walk along the beach.

goose1964 · 25/11/2020 13:23

Last winter, in Manchester, I was cold with vest,OK summer top, jumper coat and scarf ,I was freezing. Went out for the day to Clitheroe and it was even colder. I then bought a blanket scarf. I was warm but looked like a bag lady. To prove I'm a soft southerner. One night we left the pub to go for a meal and the woman in front of us was wearing cropped trousers ,Strappy sandals and a sleeveless top. She isn't even to be a bit cold.

ProperVexed · 25/11/2020 13:51

I recent purchased a heated gilet from a hunting/ shooting shop. It is fabulous. I wear it over a thermal vest and under a fleece or jumper. When I get chilly I press the button and almost instant heat arrives. I'm currently wearing it as I work from home although I bought it for cold winter bird spotting (saddo!).
I also recommend a Northface down parka, woolly hat, and neck buff.
However, I need something to keep my feet warm in wellies as 2 pairs of socks are not working for me, and something for my fingers...hands stay warm in gloves but fingers freeze.

JacobReesMogadishu · 25/11/2020 14:21

I have a Rab duvet jacket. Expensive but worth it.

TheVanguardSix · 25/11/2020 14:24

Thermal undershirt (long sleeve), pure wool jumper or a good quality fleece one, maxi goose down jacket (Land's End coat to my mid-calf).
And for gloves, I wear heat-holders thermal ones.

I have a North Face Arctic Parka and it's amazing. That plus Shepherd of Sweden knee high boots, and only my knees get cold!
