Walking Trousers

Can anyone recommend any? I walk dog daily raining all the time at the moment. Usually put on over trousers when it’s raining. Can anyone recommend trousers that aren’t over trousers but waterproof and not too hot?

I can't offer any advice or suggestions but joining your thread as I would like to know if anyone has found any comfortable and flattering walking trousers (or shorts for that matter!)

I've tried various pairs over the years (Regatta, Craghoppers etc) and they always seem to be too low and loose on the waist but tight on the hips/thighs and deeply unflattering

I've given up and stick to jeans/leggings but perhaps someone else has had success?

Interested too. Overtrousers are very sweaty

Ylvamoon · 21/11/2020 15:28

Some hiking brands do waterproof/ quick drying trousers, but a good pair is costly.

I do a lot of walking and by far the best thing to wear is running tights. More flattering than most traditionally styled walking trousers, far cheaper, in light rain they dry quickly and much easier and more comfortable to put waterproofs over when needed.

Rohan dry roamers but a) they are not cheap and b) I feel too hot in these in the summer, although they are good for winter. I got mine with a useful 25% discount from country walking mag, so there may well be discounts floating about for them.

I like the skinny trousers from Acai Outerwear. They don't look like walking trousers but do the job. They're water resistant rather than waterproof though so depends if that matters to you.

I tries some Craghoppers zip offs an found all the seams and pockets heavy and irritating

becca3210 · 21/11/2020 15:50

I also second the Açai trousers vote

WaxOnFeckOff · 21/11/2020 15:57

I don't think they need to be waterproof, just lightweight and quick drying/not cotton.

I have some cheap ones from Costco that are great.

Just look for something smooth (I also find the zip off bits irritating) and narrow at the ankles with a bit of stretch for the best comfort.

Ron Hill track pant things are still the choice of the non image conscious hillwalkers.

Thanks I've ordered a pair of Acai and a pair of regatta Highton ones, as back up. I could do with a new coat too but slightly scared to ask. I have a Rab one, not sure if it is meant to be waterproof but I originally bought it for skiing (it's not soft shell) & a couple of North Face puffas but none of them seem up to the shite Manchester weather. Currently sitting in a damp hoodie and vest.

Main thing to look for in a coat is a decent fitting hood or have a decent hat that is water resistant.

DH has some expensive jackets as he does proper mountains but if you take breathability out of it which isn't too much of a problem if you are strolling rather than exerting yourself a lot, then looking for one that has taped seams and a good hood is probably enough. For just walking about he has one that I paid about £5 for 30 years ago that is as waterproof as anything.

Am just looking at my Rab jacket. It's Polartec so shouldn't be as damp inside as it is. Just trying to work out what product I can use to re-proof it. It can't have been like this when I went skiing in it. It must have slowly lost it's waterproof over time and I've assumed it's always been like this.

You can buy reproofing stuff but I've never tried it on a ski jacket, no reason it shouldn't work though. We usually use nikwax stuff.

Nikwax bought - cheaper but less fun than splurging on a new coat. It isn't quite a ski jacket, so should hopefully be ok. Thanks for your help. I know look forward to dry, yet stylish dog walks.

Just need another coat for the dog now...!
