Facial hair removal advice needed!

I need advice on facial hair removal and recommendations. I've got fuzzy hair all over my face, especially my chin, and it really gets me down. I try to pluck out what I can but I've ended up with quite a few thicker spiky black hairs now and sometimes it's so hard to see them if they're on my jaw bone and then I suddenly notice one that's about an inch long and feel so embarrassed. I'm looking into IPL but I really need some honest reviews before I splurge. Is it worth the money? Are the ones you can use at home as good as professional ones? Will it remove peach fuzz too? Or does anyone have any other recommendations? I'm not interested in dermaplaning, I'm sure it will grow back thicker as it does with plucking. Help me please!

Honestly? I'd go straight for laser or electrolysis if you can afford it. Electrolysis is very time consuming and expensive and you can only tackle really small patches at a time but this would permanently get rid of the thicker, spikier hairs. Laser would hopefully produce some good results for the rest. It would be helpful to know what skin tone and what hair colour you have in terms of efficacy. Laser is most effective when there is a high contrast between the skin colour and the hair colour.

Due to the on and off lockdown, I’ve decided to wait a bit with laser hair removal in case I get started and then the salon has to shut again. What really helps me in the meanwhile is a vibrator size electric razor. It’s so easy to just run over my face if it feels even slightly stubbly. I’m not in the UK so there’s no point me telling you the brand I bought but there’s lots of them around

I've got very fair skin with a few freckles and my hair is fair too, apart from the odd black one! I'm very reluctant to shave because I'm scared of ending up with a full on beard!!

It hasn’t made my hair come through any thicker just stopped me have fine whiskers

I think the laser ones only work well on contrast, so pale skin and dark hair works best. I don't think fair hair on light skin would be removed by an IPL.

I have had a few thick dark chin hairs and seem to have got rid of them using my ipl. It’s taken a while, but I have gone from plucking them as they sprung up several times a week to not seeing any for weeks. For fair skin and dark hairs it works well. For light coloured hair it won’t work, sorry

Dermaplaning removes peach fuzz and doesn't grow back any thicker or give you "stubble". Can have it done in a salon after lockdown or look into doing it yourself at home? I think Veet have a home kit!

I've been dermaplaning for a couple of years, it doesn't grow back thicker, I wish I'd started it years ago.

That deals with the fluff all over the face - for the thicker ones on the chin, I pluck them out. I was having electrolysis previously for those ones, and after covid is over I'll go back and have a few more sessions to deal with them. Laser's no good for me as it's a mix of blonde and dark hair for the thicker ones (and not that many of them left anyway, as electrolysis in the past has got rid of most of them).

What dermaplaner does everyone recommend? I'm fighting a losing battle against my peach fuzz and it's getting me down. I am one small step away from buying a men's razor and shaving every day.

OP, I am perimenopausal with thyroid issues. Light skin, dark hair on head, tache and chin, blond peach fuzz on cheeks. Dark moustache, dark spiky rapidly growing hairs on chin and neck, too many to effectively pluck. Hair removal creams blistered my skin so that was a no go; waxing was hell and caused breakouts. For the longest time I just shaved tache and chin, every morning with a proper Harry's razor and creamy facial cleanser and that worked semi well. It really doesn't make anything grow back fuller or faster.

Early in the summer I got the absolute basic model Lumea (not the gun style, the one that looks like an electric razor) on a half-price sale. After 2.5 months of using every other week I've gotten pretty much rid of moustache, and reduced the chin hairs a lot. (As they are hormonal I know IPL won't do much for them.) I still swipe my chin with razor each morning to make sure no chin hairs are showing, but really it's much much better, so much so that I could probably get away with minor plucking once a week. Every so often I do my peach fuzz on cheeks as well; tache is pretty much gone. I'm more impressed by the Lumea than I expected to be, and I'm sure a newer model with a facial port would be even better.

The key with shaving is, I think, use a good razor, rinse and dry thoroughly between uses, change blades or razors frequently, and don't be self-conscious about it. Better to shave in private at home for 15 seconds each morning, when you wash your face, than to find those horrible bristly chin and neck hairs in the middle of the day in public.

Electronysis worked for me. I had 15 minute session every couple of weeks for a while.. I had quite a mouctache and hairs on chin and jawline.
I haven't got rid of all the tache but it is now far less noticable.

Thanks everyone, I think I'm going to go for electrolysis when some sort of normality has resumed! Seems like IPL won't do much for the fuzz as it's too light and I don't want to be wasting money on anything that doesn't work/will make it worse in the long run. I've been waxing for years but I am definitely hairier for doing that so really don't want to shave! Is there anything I need to look out for when finding somewhere to have electrolysis done?

Look for a reputable clinic with some reviews. All electrolysis practitioners need to be registered (forget which body with but Google it and you'll find out). Check that the practitioners are qualified and have a license. Also know that it can be a bit painful but well worth it in my opinion.

FrancoBranco · 29/11/2020 16:51

Does anybody know if electrolysis works on peach fuzz, or if the hairs have to be thick for it to work?

spoonrace · 01/12/2020 08:33

I don't think electrolysis would be much good for peach fuzz - the beautician has to be able to see where the hair goes into the skin so they can kill the root. The pore would maybe be too small.

Practically as well, it would take forever - if you're like me, peach fuzz is thousands of hairs all over your face. It is good for the thicker hairs though.
