Make-up starter kit recommendation

I'm mid-30s, wrinkles are starting to show, have no make-up skill as had quite sensitive skin as a teen. Any make up I have owned is long out of date. I was hoping to take advantage of Black Friday deals as can't go into a store.

I'm after some basic natural look make-up that I can do quickly and not faff around too much but have no idea where or what to buy. My current regime entails just slathering on some Olay beauty fluid twice a day. Price wise i was aiming for around £60 but can be flexible with the budget.

I'm Caucasian with dark hair so think my skin might be a medium as I'm not as fair as someone with blonde hair blue eyes but I'm not very tanned atm either.

Any help would be gratefully received.

So from Superdrug or Boots buy a foundation such as L'Oreal true match as it has a good colour range. They also do a great powder. Buy eyeshadow palettes from Superdrug revolution to practice with along with a blusher and matte bronzer to bronze and contour with. Get any old mascara really they're all the same. Get garnier or simple micellar water and cotton pads to remove make up with. Follow with Cerave SA face wash to clean skin. Apply Superdrug Simply Pure hydrating serum as a moisturiser in the morning and evening after cleansing. Cleanse in the morning with either just a cotton pad and micellar water or flannel and warm water or flannel and Cerave SA and water.

Forgot lipstick just get a Rimmel or L'Oreal one for now in a pinky brown neutral shade

As for brushes get real techniques one or Superdrug or Boots own brands.

Look up Lisa Eldridge blog for videos for how to apply.

There's also an excellent woman called Ali Andrea who has an excellent video of how not to apply makeup - it's a must watch. Just type in 'how not to apply make up'

For skin care look at Caroline Hirons blog at the cheat sheets, but do not get swayed into buying all the £££ products she'll try and flog you via her kits and discount offers as she she's promotes these products. There is a FB page of hers which is useful but again enter with caution re spending unnecessary £££.

me again sorry.

If you want concealers then Maybelline eraser is great esp for under eyes and Collection lasting concealer.

doadeer · 19/11/2020 17:50

For me basic skincare is:
Balm or milk cleanser - don't need to spend a lot
Moisturiser
SPF
Everything else is optional.

Make up
I like the rimmel or boujois foundation but I actually don't wear it anymore as i don't need it at the minute.

I like a bronzer to just over cheeks then a highlighter powder on my cheek bones.

Masarca - I like Charlotte Tilbury but I don't think this would work with the budget you set out. You're probably fine with just anyone from boots.

Lipstick - rimmel ones are great in my opinion. Depends how dramatic you want.

Trinny London. Try the online colour-matching service? There’s one you do yourself, or a video meeting with a professional.

Their stuff might suit you if you want sheer and quick. Very versatile products- some for lip and cheek together. Not sure your budget will cover enough variety of product in their range, but I can say that the little pots (it’s cream based) last for far longer than I expected.

DarlingCoffee · 20/11/2020 08:02

Yes I was coming on here to say Trinny London and use the match to me to get your shades suited to your colouring.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 20/11/2020 22:31

Thank you all for your recommendations it's much appreciated.
Budget wise I can afford more, it's just I can't imagine spending £££ I can't believe the price of the Charlotte Tilbury stuff but it does look lovely.

Agree Trinny London is a good option!

Can you wait until after lockdown so you can go to a few counters to try things? It's so hard to get the right colour online. I would avoid spending without a coherent plan iyswim because you'll end up with a bunch of random stuff. I think if you're starting from scratch then getting a few products of the best quality you can is a good idea, so I wouldn't just buy mabelline. It'll also be pleasing to your eye if the products are all from the same brand and match.

I don't think Charlotte tilbury is your best best if you're coming from nothing, it's not massively natural. Her brow colour brush is great though. Bobbi brown has some lovely natural products. The cream pot rouge in fresh melon suits everyone and is easy to use, for example. I would not get a foundation if you don't usually wear one. Just get a good concealer and use it where you need it. Nars creamy concealer is good - you could look at nars more generally. Wouldn't bother with lipstick. Just do concealer, good mascara, sort brows (they add definition to ageing face), and some cheek colour, cream blush will look more youthful. I haven't tried trinny London but agree that it looks quite sheer and natural and has a colour matching tool online which could work for you.

However. Make up is only the top layer! You need to think about your skincare. Most experts agree that the basic elements needed are:
Retinol (really the only ingredient clinically proven to prevent and reduce wrinkles to any significant extent)
Vitamin c/antioxidant
SPF.

You can keep going with your moisturiser. Do a decent cleanse, some people like one with a mild acid in it to get really clean. Peptides and hyaluronic acid in a serum can also be helpful for plumping skin.

For a cheap starter brand look at The Ordinary.

@upsidedownroundabout thank you. Im not in any rush I was just hoping there would be some quick '5 minute makeup' sets if such a thing exists coming up in the black Friday sales.

I found a Clinique 'Fresh Face forward' set that looks like a good starting point for now or maybe the QVC bare minerals 'clean' 6 piece set both around £40. So I might buy one of those and see how I go and then after Lockdown / boxing day sales go in person and buy some other products.

I can't be bothered with make up every day but if I use the below I look so much healthier and younger:

Maybeline eye eraser concealer under eyes and on eye lids quickly dabbed in with a beauty blender. £6

Either a small amount of Chanel bronze universal buffed in with a big synthetic brush. It's one colour and you can just apply all over and it's pretty subtle but gives a good glow and smooths out colouring.

Or origins tinted moisturiser all over.

Both of those are pricey but last ages and don't need anything else on top

Sometimes I also use a dab of Mac strobe cream on the cheekbones and a bit of any blusher.

Takes 3 mins and looks like a better version of natural.

Probably about the tight budget too.

neverenoughchelseaboots · 21/11/2020 09:52

Right budget, not right.

neverenoughchelseaboots · 21/11/2020 09:52

Gahhhh. Auto correct.

These qvc deals are quite good. YouTube videos are good to learn how to put some slap on nicely.
