Do you think you are stylish?

And if so, can you please tell me why and then help me.

I think this may be a futile quest as I wonder if I’m too lazy and unbothered to make a sustained effort. I usually wear hoodies and leggings, I walk A LOT and tend to wear plimsolls most of the time. In recent months I’ve even stopped wearing a bra as there is no one to see. I really would like to try and change though. I’d love to be more stylish and if I’m honest I’d love to look sexier.

Please could you tell me why you think you are stylish and then please give me some suggestions of what to do.

Im 5’4, size 12, big boobs. I’m sure I could look much better if I tried/was motivated to.

Id love to wear dresses/nice coats/stylish tops and wear some nice shoes.

Have been saving quite a bit so have a good budget so don’t mind investing in quality items.

Thank you!

I’m not sure my style is everyone’s cup of tea, but I think I look stylish and am frequently complimented. I’m definitely not sexy though, and I don’t ever wear “nice shoes”, for example!

I’m a lecturer, so usually on my feet a lot. I teach in a creative subject, so don’t need to dress formally. For now I am teaching remotely from home. Mental-health-wise - and for my students’ sake since I am on camera a lot - I have got property dressed pretty much every day since lockdown in March. Definitely on work days!

Typical outfits just now are jeans, or cords, with fitted jumpers on top. Usually trainers. I like a balloon or barrel leg style. For actual work I wear a lot of culottes, leather mini-ish skirts with 100 denier opaques, midi dresses.

I have a good haircut, trimmed every five weeks, always wear red lipstick, and always have painted nails.

I’m 5/6, and a size 10, very pear shaped, so I tend to spend more on bottom things because cheap trousers or jeans look really shit on me. I always look after things in terms of hems/buttons being stitched if they start to go, and regular dry cleaning (when I used to go out!). I have lots of coats/jackets which I have collected over the years, because I live in a cold place, and again, I tend to spend a reasonable amount there because they last a long time, and they are often the only thing people see in winter.

Shops I like are Cos, Other Stories, Topshop, Zara, Whistles, plus more basic things from H&M, and M&S.

You are probably thinking, well, that sounds bleurgh, so my best advice would be to “upgrade” what you currently like wearing to nicer versions, and go from there?

I have no idea if I am stylish or not, that's for others to decide. I just wear what I like and that's usually a dress as it's easier with arthritis! However, you need a bra! You could be wearing the most fashion forward, buttery soft, well cut, perfectly stitched etc. etc. in the land, you won't look good without a decent bra. Doesn't have to be megabucks either, just the right type of bra for the boobs you have. The right style too - some boobs like balconettes, others look better in a full cup. It really does make such a difference and once you've got a decent foundation, it'll motivate you to make more of an effort over the top of it.

Seeing as it's winter, how about swapping the plimsolls for some boots? There are so many flat styles around which will take you from A to B easily.

Easy steps - upgrade your plimsols to a chunkier white trainer.
Upgrade your leggings to fitted joggers with a proper defined waist.
Upgrade your hoodie to a cropped sweatshirt - for sexy, go for a sweatshirt with a wide slash neck tbat can be worn slightly off shoulder.
Top it all off with an oversized wool coat - whatever colour suits you. Camel, blush pink, navy or tan brown are all in at the mo and pretty versatile.
If you want to be uber stylish, top it all off with a huge under your arm clutch bag. Or easier option, a cross body bag.

Hello, thank you! These suggestions are really helpful as i had no idea where to start!

Today, I have made an effort with what I'm wearing out of what I have - and I don't think it's too bad - fitted black v neck t shirt, although still with leggings hmmm.

Can I ask, with the plimsolls - do they seem terribly unstylish? With a dress or skirt, might they seem ok?

JMAngel1 I really like your suggestions of cropped sweatshirt or one with wide slash neck. I really need to be told exactly what to wear to even begin to understand, ha. Do you know where I could get that type of sweatshirt from?

On a good day yes....but I wear what I like and I mix it up...there are no rules...other people frequently comment on my style especially young uns I am pushing 50 next year. I thought what JMAngel said was good. Lockdown is not helping as I am getting lazy and wearing generic lounge wear or my scruffs out on my allotment!

Audreyseyebrows · 18/11/2020 20:20

I like to make an effort. For myself!

Do you have anyone who’s style you admire?

JMAngel1 · 18/11/2020 20:40

Boohoo would be a good starting point - you wouldn't spend too much money trying to figure out if a look was for you. Plus loads of cropped sweatshirts and joggers.

If you want to spend more, you could look at Hush or All Saints.

You could also switch out your usual leggings for faux leather leggings.
Also consider a body top with a scoop neck over baggier trousers/jeans - mom jeans or paperbag trousers.
Maybe a midi body con dress with trainers and a big long cardi over the top?
