Help me de-orange the balayage! 😬 Pic attached

Hi,

So I had a subtle balayage (one session) a few months ago and had it toned a couple of weeks before lockdown 2, which looked much cooler and I really liked it.

Now the toner has washed out, I'm left with a much warmer, orangey tone and purple shampoo/ conditioner does absolutely NOTHING. If anything, I find it looks a little warmer.

I ideally want to go a bit lighter to avoid the ongoing tangerine battle, but I am not attempting that at home! That would highly likely end in disaster 😳

Could I at least tone at home, given I'm a complete hair colour novice?.. How? Where do I purchase? What do I purchase? See? Novice 🤦‍♀️

TIA

Blue shampoo for orange, not purple. Redken do one.

SparklyGlitter95 · 17/11/2020 14:18

Try fanola no more orange shampoo

dontgobaconmyheart · 17/11/2020 14:20

Fanola blue shampoo. I'd wear gloves though or st lesdt know upfront that it stains a bit- nails, hands, bath, towel etc. So I'd use an old towel/make sure you rinse the bath well etc.

Thanks!

I'm a bit annoyed with my hairdresser, I have to say, as she did actually insist on purple shampoo after I told her I'd heard it did nothing for orange tones.

Oh well. So blue will knock that warmth out then?

I use purple shampoo, my hair is bleached ash blonde, your hair needs a blue toner to tone down the orange.

Have you not asked your hairdresser? My hairdresser sends me links to products so I can buy the exact one I need but she is a mobile hairdresser. Was your done in a salon? Contact them to see if you can purchase the one they used the first time.

Toning your hair is very easy, usually just a colour shampoo. Your hair is lovely by the way.

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 17/11/2020 14:28

Just seen your update, worrying. A quick google confirms blue for orange on brunettes.

StillStriving · 17/11/2020 14:31

I think it looks really nice! Sorry. Not helpful. But your hair is fab.

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 17/11/2020 14:31

And yes to gloves, avoid the white grout if you have it as coloured shampoo is horrific for staining that sort of thing. Just shampoo your head like it is a bomb that will explode, gently, gently so as not to fling coloured foam everywhere Grin

I tend to not do mine in the shower but over the bath so it doesn't have a 5 foot drop.

Audreyseyebrows · 17/11/2020 14:32

I really like it Grin

pookypup · 17/11/2020 14:34

My hair is very similar to yours and I use the Redken brown lights shampoo mentioned up thread. Once a week and leave for 5 mins. Has really kept the orange at bay!

wakemeupwhencovidends · 17/11/2020 14:41

@OnTheBenchOfDoom, I asked about maintenance and she said a purple shampoo should be enough. Didn't think to ask about what she actually used tbh. Wouldn't have thought they'd want to divulge that kind of info in case they lost money. Maybe it's a normal question to ask 🤔

@StillStriving and @Audreyseyebrows, aww thank you 😊 I don't hate it, it's just it can look a bit unflattering against my pale skin.

I like your hair how it is too.

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 17/11/2020 14:51

@wakemeupwhencovidends a good hairdresser will want your hair to look amazing so hopefully people see it and ask where you had it done.

She clearly steered you weirdly toward purple shampoo which is definitely for blondes to remove brassy tones.

I know PP have mentioned Fanola and I have heard good things about it, but it is definitely a blue shampoo. Don't worry about not knowing stuff, that is what MN is here for. And hairdressers can make people feel uncomfortable about asking questions.

My hairdresser is fantastic, she taught me how to curl my hair (I didn't want to be one of those people who leave it on too long and a large chunk of my hair falls out) and I am over 40! Advised me on which curling thing to buy etc.

TessTackle · 17/11/2020 14:59

Hairdresser here, Fenola is the way to go.
But agree with pp who said mind the staining!

As per the colour wheel (opposite colours cancel each other out) you want a blue not purple shampoo. Fenola specifically do a no orange one and you can get it on Amazon.

@OnTheBenchOfDoom, tbh I don't think I've been very lucky with hairdressers. I would love to find one who really listens and knows what they're doing.

@TessTackle....could that be you? 😂 Thank you.

Shall check out all recommendations!

Can I hijack your thread OP as there seem to be some very knowledgeable folk on it. Grin Im growing my grey out and I have dyed brown hair which looks very warm beneath my cool grey salt and pepper roots as they grow out. Is there a toner which will make my dyed brown hair a bit more ash-y brown so it matches the grey slightly better?

Thank you OP and anyone who can help!

wakemeupwhencovidends · 17/11/2020 19:15

Hope someone comes along to help @PuppyMonkey

Fressia123 · 17/11/2020 19:21

That means you need a "cool" hairdye such as a dark ash blonde. If you can find one that is extra ash it usually looks more brown than anything else. (Angelina Jolie's natural hair colour is that shade)

wakemeupwhencovidends · 17/11/2020 20:00

@Fressia123, can you recommend one?

Something like that and sorry for the late reply!
