How to maintain my highlights (pic included)

I have naturally dark brown hair which is increasingly greying. My hairdresser suggested adding some highlights to my usual all-over colour to avoid the 'salt and pepper' look, and I was pleased with how the highlights helped to blend the greys.

I need to book to have the colour re-done soon, but I'm new to highlights and don't know what to ask for now. Do I have them re-done every couple of months along with my base colour? I'm guessing yes, otherwise I'll lose the benefit of them blending the greys as they come through at the root?

Any advice on what to request when I call to book? Thx

Your highlights are a bit too blocky and not fine enough. You need someone who knows what they're doing to do something like a root drag and to blend it all in a bit more. It's really not something you can do successfully at home. Once you've got it sorted a bit, you can maintain the roots better yourself and keep the right tone with purple shampoo.

Roots every appt 6-8 weeks with your base colour /or at home if confident.

Highlights every 2 or third visit.

Wont need them as much if sunny as it naturally lightens .

If i get too blond I get some darker lowlights added I personally don't want to look too dark.

Purple shampoo once a week

Thanks @Othering. I know what you mean about the "blocky" look. I think at my next appointment I'll just have the roots done, and see what the hairdresser says about blending everything together a bit more. If she doesn't seem to get it, it might be time to look for someone new.
Will defo try the purple shampoo to dial down the brassiness.

Thanks @Thedrummersmrs. That's exactly the kind of advice I need.

I think the point Is to not get the brown put in, then the highlights will blend in with your natural greys.
I would ask for them not so stripey next time x

Ask for babylights, it's done using a smaller weave and will be less blocky abs blend better into your natural hair

With all due respect, can u go to another hairdresser? Although your hair looks absolutely fine, your highlights could be done so much better.
They are very blocky. I wouldn’t want you to pay for this again, when there are lots of talented hairdressers about! :)

P.S it really is ok for now 😉 don’t want you to feel bad.

Thanks so much for the comments and ideas everyone. Here is a pic from the side. It doesn't look quite so blocky, but seeing this makes me want to just cut half of it off and go back to all-over brunette.
I'm 44, but I think this hair is really ageing me. Whenever I've gone shorter in the past, the texture is so coarse that it sticks out all ways and doesn't ever sit right. So I end up growing it down again and wearing it in a messy bun. Aaah!!

Today I used a blow drying creme, smoothed the dried hair with a hot brush, and applied a finishing creme. And I still look like I've just emerged from a hedge. Back to my bulldog clip up do tomorrow!

The blonde highlights are really badly done. Sorry, that's a bit brutal isn't it. I mean it with kindness! I wouldn't go back to the same hairdresser to be honest. They've done an awful job. Brassy, stripey highlights with absolutely no blending. Your hair itself looks lovely actually and it'll look fantastic once someone with a bit of skill sorts it out for you.

dryshampooer · 17/11/2020 21:50

@Othering Thanks, I wanted some honest advice. I'm going to ask around for recommendations for a new hairdresser.
