How much clothing does a newborn really need? Numbers?!

Hi everyone!

I'll be a first time mummy in June and I wondered how much clothes a newborn really needs? How many baby grows do you go through a day? Vests a day? So many questions!

Would really like to hear from other mums what they actually went through, I've bought a few unisex bundles on eBay and wondering how much of certain ages I need to get as I'm really not sure!

Thanks in advance everyone 😊

Depends how often you will wash?

Also depends how big your baby is at birth. The shops will be open (hopefully!!) when baby is here. Couple of packs of 5 newborn vests and sleep suits to start with. If baby is tiny or bigger then send someone to get additional stuff for in hospital. Pack of baby hats, pack of scratch mits.

More muslin clothes than you ever dream necessary. Then buy some more.

Some babies are really sicky, some aren't.

People will buy you stuff, always ask for 3 months + if possible, they grow so very very quickly.

We got 12 vests, 12 sleep suits, and two cardigans. Plus a couple of sweet but unpractical little dresses (only a couple as she grew sooo quickly). If you find you don't have enough, it's so easy to get hold of more when the time comes. Don't get too much as they only wear things for a few weeks before growing into the next size!

These John Lewis ones were the best as the cotton is so thick and soft

If you have a reliable washer and dryer, not that much. 2 packs of 3 body suits and sleepsuits in first couple of sizes, don't bother with the cute stuff until older plus everyone gives you stuff. Once they get to 6 months you'll need more due to food being messy and them moving about plus they stay in the same size for far longer

I'd say 10 vests, 10 baby grows, 2 cardigans

That way you've got enough to wash every 3 days or so and have spares for poo explosions, vomiting, dribbling and so on.

Me and DH are both tall and big framed, DD was 8lb11 at birth, newborn size lasted exactly 1 week then she was into 0-3.

Baby grows and vests are easy to buy from any supermarket or online so you're best having just a few and adding more if you need to once you know the right size.

Muslins I found really useful but some people don't like them, I had a May baby and it was a hot summer, so I used them as bibs, face cloths and also as blankets to stop her getting too warm. Also improvised an outfit out of 2 of them, knotted artfully around her on one ridiculous day where she managed to kill 3 outfits with poo and vomit during a 1 and a half hour outing!

Don't buy any sets of trousers, shirts, skirts, dresses till they're moving about. The faff of getting everything on and off just isn't worth it and something about baby feet seems to repel socks so barring duck tape it seems impossible to actually keep them on.

We rotated roughly 10 bodysuits and 10 sleepsuits, 2 cardigans and a couple of hats.

As you are having a July baby you will likely need a little less or swap some of the sleepsuits for rompers.

Handful of Muslim squares. Two swaddles. One grobag.

My baby was born in June this year. We just used / needed short sleeved vests and babygros (sleep suits). Had about 10 of each in newborn and 0-3 months size. We had two light baby hats. Bought a cardigan which was never used.
Found it really handy to have about 4-5 cellular blankets in the house for the cozi-sleeper, Moses basket and pram. We never used grobags, even though I had bought a few of them.
We only put baby into real clothes when he grew into 6-9 month clothes.
I find muslin cloths very useful, especially now he's now nearly 5 months and drooling everywhere! We have lots of them stashed all around the house so a clean one is always close to hand but 6 is probably enough, especially if you're going to do regular washes.
The amount of clothes needed really depends on baby but that would be a good start until you get to know your baba
