Calling all hairdressers: how to tone brassy colour from brown hair

Lagirl20 · 14/11/2020 15:44

I have naturally mousy brown hair that I recently had dyed with a semi at the hairdressers to cover a very small amount of greys. Initially the colour looked great but now it’s fading and becoming very warm and brassy. I’m assuming I need a blue/green toner but I can’t find anything online - only toning shampoos.

Can you recommend a product to use? Hate the warmth of my hair and want it back to being a cool ash brown. Thanks!

You need a blue based shampoo to neutralise orange/brassy tones.
Joico Color Balance Blue Shampoo

Thanks! I have tried some and they didn’t make much difference so I’m wondering if I can use products to tone it myself at home

Get a purple conditioner and leave it on your hair like a mask before you wash it

I’m blonde, but this is brilliant. Much more potent that a shampoo. I had the same problem, tried lots of products before I finally hit on the solution.

I use the Charles Worthington blue shampoo, but not to wash, I mix it with conditioner about 50/50, and leave it on for around half an hour before rinsing.

Purple is for yellow tones
Blue is for orange tones

Fanola no Orange?

I use the L’Oréal purple shampoo on my dark brown (almost black) dyed hair. My natural colour has some warmth to it which I hate, sometimes it seems to come through after a few weeks so I use this shampoo. Leave it on for a few minutes before rinsing. Oh and use an old towel!

Avenda Black Malva conditioner - worked brilliantly when I used to dye my hair (brunette).

I use scott cornwall colour restore toner. There are various colours you can get and most are available on amazon.
It's semi permanent and lasts about 8 washes but 1 tube contains lots of applications. It leaves my hair lovely and soft too.

Yup blue tones to neautralise orange and green tones to neutralise red :) ProVoke do a cool brunette set of shampoo and conditioner; I bought the silver one this weekend as I've gone back to pale blonde and it does a good job of toning raw bleached hair so it quite effective

CloudyVanilla · 15/11/2020 06:49

Just to reiterate, although it's possible to have unrefined yellow in brown hair it is likely that purple shampoo will do very little for brunette hair. It is designed for blondes with exposed yellow pigment and will likely be a waste of money for even light brown hair

Another vote for Fanola no orange

Marking my spot :)

Im naturally mousy brown but shove a darker brown on every couple of months - especially when the greys start being too noticeable.
My hair always goes brassy after a couple of weeks or so but I never knew you could buy shampoo to help!!!!
Does it work? What does it actually do?

Karmatime · 15/11/2020 08:18

I second Aveda Black Malva. Purple shampoo and conditioner worked when I had light highlights but not on full head of brown dye. The Black Malva totally takes out the warm brassy tones. Don’t over use it though as it can build up and look a bit too dark.

DianaT1969 · 15/11/2020 08:41

Whatever you use - shampoo or conditioner - leave it on for at least 30 mins.

Lagirl20 · 15/11/2020 22:40

Thank you everyone 😁
