Glasses & Dark hair & fringe ?

BawJaws · 13/11/2020 15:07

I’ve been told to get glasses

Anyway problem is: I have a straight blunt cut fringe, and v long (waist length) dark hair.

What do I do?
Coloured specs?
Grow out fringe?
Shorter?
Smaller glasses to stop face being crowded?
Cats eye to break up lines a bit?

What ever I do I think I will look v severe esp because hair colour.

Would love to hear from anybody with a fringe and glasses!! Did you change your hairstyle?

I have a Louise Brooks type bob with a very short, blunt (curved really) fringe. I tend to wear contact lenses mainly, but my glasses are big, round Calvin Klein ones. My hair is dark brown, and the glasses are black frames.

I've had glasses/lenses since I was a child, so it is just second nature to me. I have had mainly tortoiseshell frames, but the black ones look really cool - not severe at all.

You sound beautiful Judy ❤️

I am nowhere near good looking enough for a Louise Brooks bob myself Grin

I was already wearing glasses when I decided to have a fringe cut in, my hair's dark brown. I prefer black, heavier frames, but I have a longish face, so don't mind a bit of overcrowding. I couldn't work out whether to tuck the fringe in at first.

Is it possible to try a few pairs on? The right glasses can have a similar effect to make-up.

You can try glasses on online, just upload a photo of yourself. It isn't perfect, but gives you an idea www.visionexpress.com/glasses-home

Look at some pics of Zooey Deschanel, she has dark hair and a fringe and looks great in glasses. From memory I think she has fairly thick dark brown frames.

You ideally need to try a variety of styles on too see what suits you. No need to lose the fringe.

I’ve tried the app and tried a pod of glasses in person today

I need other people to read me and tell me what looks best,
For some reason I cannot judge my appearance at all

I basically don’t think I look nice in any of them 😂

You need a good optician / optical tailor to advise. They know what works with your face shape.

KizzyKat91 · 13/11/2020 19:38

My hairdresser has long dark hair, a blunt fringe and glasses! She wears brightly coloured cat eye glasses. I’ve seen her in bright red and purple ones. She looks very chic, but her dress style is quite retro.

Sounds like I have similar hair to you - I have a pair of tortoiseshell with a bit of blue/grey to lighten them up and a pair of blue/gold metal frames. But I have a pretty mainstream sense of style, there are so many women out there who wear colourful glasses in cool shapes and they look fabulous.
These are the ones I have. Interestingly enough the second pair seem much lighter in colour in person!

I agree with the PP's though, it's best if you can get to an opticians and just try on as many pairs as you can! With their help you'll usually find a style you like and that suits you pretty quickly. If you find a pair of glasses that look good shape wise, but you don't love, get the measurements off them (Bridge/width etc), which can help you look online.

Hello this is me too!
I go with the harshness 😀 and have thick black plastic and tortoise rimmed glasses 👓 and have had a lovely bright purple too. I think the shape of the glasses compared to your face is the most important thing!

anomletteandaglassofwine · 14/11/2020 17:50

I've been wearing glasses since I was 4 years old! My recommendation is to go to a good independent optician (or 2/3), take your time and try on lots of frames even ones you don't think will suit as you can be surprised at what suits your face shape.

Staff in the chains don't really have the time to spend with you I find. It can take a while to find exactly the right frame and fit but it's worth persevering as you'll be wearing them every day. Im always inclined to spend a bit on a really good frame, the cost per wear will be pennies, and a frame that really suits you is such a confidence boost.

GrimDamnFanjo · 14/11/2020 18:55

Absolutely find a good independent with stylists. If you are in the North try www.seen.co.uk in Manchester. Not cheap but an amazing service with optical designer glasses, many of which are not available elsewhere.
I've got a small but growing collection of glasses from there which I wouldn't have chosen for myself and turn wearing glasses into a style positive.

Just wanted to come back to say thanks for the advice.

I cut my fringe shorter - about an inch above eyebrows

And ordered
Red rectangle glasses
And round tortoiseshell glasses - I look much much better than I hoped. Face is balanced!
