I’ve been looking into getting a Phillips Lumea IPL machine but wondered how good they are as they are quite expensive, am fed up of epilating as it’s quite painful, immacing and shaving doesn’t last long enough, anyone tried it?

I am thinking the same, no advice but I'm considering getting one too.

It is so expensive but if it works I think I might...

The other thing I wonder is are the definitely safe...

I've seen loads of people in here say they're brilliant. I'd love one but am pale with gingery hair so I don't think it'd work.

I bought one recently after reading all of the old threads on here and other online reviews. I got the Lumea Prestige. To be honest I was doubtful it would work for me as I have very coarse, dark hair and it seemed too good to be true. I have the type of hair that never really looks/feels like you have shaved even when you have just done it. I have just completed my third fortnightly treatment and its absolutely changed my life. I am so impressed with the results. After the first treatment thought I was going to be in the small minority of people that they refer to in the manual that actually see more hair growth as things seemed to be a bit worse but then I definitely started seeing results by the second treatment. I can now go a week without needing to shave at all which is mind boggling for me and I think things are only going to get better as I move through the treatments. I also don't have problems with really itchy regrowth that I used to. One thing that hasn't changed much yet is that I still have the dark dots on my legs under the skin where you can see the hair follicles and other people had said those would disappear too so I'm hopeful. I'm in my mid thirties and I really wish I had saved up and got one sooner, knowing what I know now. Other info- I have dark hair and pale skin so can use it on the highest setting (5). It doesn't really hurt but there can be a bit of heat/stinging sensation when you zap. Its a breeze compared to epliating anyway!

@cactusdog I couldn't find anything in my research that pointed at them being potentially unsafe and in their own literature they talk about the technology being around for 25 years. To be honest I'm still a little concerned as the concept is so strange to me and I worry about the fact that I am artificially encouraging hair to enter its 'resting' phase but I don't know.

Does anyone know if it works on bleached skin? I would love to buy one and get rid of my moustache but I could not go without bleaching it!

FujiSakura · 13/11/2020 17:46

I don't think it would @emmylousings as it says it doesn't work on light/grey hair. Plus you have to completely remove the hair first before using (by shaving/waxing etc). If there is any hair left the light can't get to the follicle properly and you get a horrible burning smell!

DD has one, absolutely loves it. After the first 4/5 months she no longer has to shave her legs. It's life-changing.

Thighdentitycrisis · 13/11/2020 22:24

@emmylousings
I bleach my moustache but there are some stubborn ones. what I have done is pluck those odd ones and a couple days later when I think they are about to emerge again I zap with the Lumea, I figured that makes it like I had shaved them.

I've had a Philips lumea for a couple of years; I love it! I paid £300ish, and it's more than paid for itself now as no need for bikini waxes, and I don't need much shaving cream or new razors anymore.

It's not that painful (and I'm a wimp!), but it can get hot if it's been on for a while and can feel a bit like an elastic band snapping against your skin when it's hot. But it lasts a second and easily solved by turning it off and leaving it for 15 minutes or so to cool down. I use it on 5 which is the highest setting, if you use a lower setting it gets hotter slowly.

Philips also do a 100 day money back guarantee:

One of my friends bought one, but unfortunately didn't work for her after the first 4 treatments so she returned it and got a full refund.

NachoFries · 13/11/2020 22:52

I was given one as a gift but never used it. Didn’t realise how expensive it was Blush Do you reckon it still works? I was given it almost 5-6 years.

Lozzi23 · 14/11/2020 13:09

Well I think I’m going to get one, thanks everyone!!!! 👍🏼 Xx

@NachoFries

If you've never used it then hopefully should be okay. Once you start using it I think you need to recharge it every few months or so or the battery goes flat.
