Any ideas where I can buy something stylish and not too cutesy for a couple in their early thirties please? They have just moved into their first place.

Any suggestions much appreciated!

Don't give a knife, if they're in anyway a believer of suspicions they won't like it. Sorry pp who suggested that!

Very large planter is a lovely idea. They're the kind of thing that is good to have but if you're not massively into gardening you're unlikely to buy.

I just got this octopus set from a few people and love it!

Second the fruit bowl with fruit in it, I got one as a house warming gift once and loved it

I think wine glasses and a nice with e would be best.

Wine

Oh I like the Dyptique candle idea.

I didn't particularly warm to any of the personalised things I have seen so far. I can't see them using a cheese board, unfortunately.

I don't think a knife sends exactly the right message I was aiming for. But I agree, they are really useful. We got a Global knife as a wedding present and we still use it most days.

Thanks so much btw for all the suggestions Flowers!

I always go for good quality versions of useful things- I got one friend some really gorgeous chopping boards (the kind you'd use for presentation or grazing platters) I've bought some good serving dishes, salad bowls. Something useful & really lovely that you wouldn't buy for yourself.

What are the superstitions? I don't know any of those - was just smugly thinking about my own lovely new knife and thinking it would be a nice thing to have. But don't want to frighten people instead of doing something nice for them!
SwimmingOnEggshells · 10/11/2020 23:18

@ElizabethinherGermanGarden I think it's the usual 'will bring them bad luck' claptrap but as the OP says, it might send the wrong message and is probably where the superstition originates.

Mind, I do appreciate a sharp pointy knife (for prepping food!)

the most used of our wedding presents is a pair of bed trays with foldable legs - DH brings me a cup of tea most mornings and a piece of toast each at weekends and it's just a Nice Thing to have. Also useful for eating supper off sofas/taking tea & biscuits outside on a nice day, etc.

burglarbettybaby · 10/11/2020 23:27

When I moved into my house I was given plain white towels and I still have them 15years later

Wine glasses and a bottle of fizz would be perfect. Or decent mugs.

Big White Company scented candle?

Tagine or a chicken brick?

Le creuset mug set - not necessarily very exciting but likely to be well used and they are lovely mugs can get full size or espresso and the colours of the rainbow set are lovely - example here around £50 www.google.co.uk/shopping/product/7456828866002514178?q=Le+Creuset+mugs&client=safari&sa=X&hl=en-gb&biw=375&bih=553&tbs=cat:2169,pdtr0:749890%7C749901,vw:g,init_ar:SgVKAwj5EEoKUggIwuItIM3iLUoHsgQECP-rIA%3D%3D,ss:44&prds=epd:11317891796446571,cdl:1,prmr:1,cs:1&ved=0ahUKEwiEgrPq6PnsAhXWVBUIHQPuCAYQgTYIyAg

One thing I bought for myself was large white serving dishes in several sizes for the odd occasions I am entertaining or on special occasions.

This comes with a warning for your wallet but have a look at the homewear section here www.georgjensen.com/en-gb
Danish design and they have something for all budgets.

I got my stepson and his gf a set of etched tumblers. Really nice, heavy glass. They loved them.

Imtoooldforallthis · 11/11/2020 07:05

How about this

supportivemyarse · 11/11/2020 09:19

good quality practical items they will get a lot of use out of always go down well eg smart wine glasses or heavy tumblers & highballs, electric can opener, fluffy white towel bale, garlic press, posh candle.

avoid decorative items unless you are very sure of their taste, its a bit of a minefield. and they may plan to redecorate/restyle the new house.

mm47 · 11/11/2020 09:34

A salad spinner. This isn’t glamorous but if they eat salad regularly it’s a total gamechanger. Or a really fabulous cheese slicer. Like the Bjorklund one for hard cheese from Manufactum. Or a stainless steel lemon reamer eg Alessi Mysqueeze (naming it to differentiate it from the stupid spider thing), you can get it on Amazon.

As personal taste can be quite difficult to gauge the things I’m suggesting are all incredibly useful. Apart from the Alessi Mysqueeze they’re not particularly Wow-factor but are what my husband would call slow-burn presents, slowly you find you’re using them all the time and totally love them.

Thanks all!

I've gone with what a lot of people suggested and what was also one of my first thoughts; wine glasses.

I've sent some slightly quirky, non-matching, coloured, sturdy, big goblet type things. I think they suit this couple's style, (and mine Grin). I know some people object to wine glasses where you can't see the colour of your wine clearly, but I think this couple won't mind that. I like them. They are big enough to work as water glasses if wine really doesn't look nice in them.

I went with 2 x green, 2 x purple heather, 2 x grey.

I've sent them now, so omg please don't everyone say they're ghastly Grin.
