Is retinol worth it?

I’ve been using Dermatica since august and wondering if I should continue. Blackheads have improved, I think because of the drying effects. I used to have quite oily skin and am thinking this is quite a good quality, in terms of ageing. I’ve had a very small amount of peeling so wonder if it’s not strong enough. I can’t really see any difference though I know it’s meant to take a long time to work. The prescription I’m on is trelinoin 0.05% and niacinamide 4% if that means anything to anyone Confused Shall I persevere?

I had the same from dermatica, I stopped the prescription because I wasn't using it fast enough. I didn't notice any difference really but I probably should have used it every night. Mind you a had a microdermabrasion the other week and my pores are still massive, I think my skin is just shit now

It takes at least 6 months to start to see a real difference. Not peeling is a good thing. Its not a face peel. If you're peeling, it's too strong. The 0.1% is more of a severe acne treatment than a treatment for ageing. I suggest you just keep doing what you're doing.

Honestly it’s all about the long game with Retin-A. I nearly gave up after 6 months, I had a ‘wow’ moment after about 9 months when I noticed lines had reduced. It’s not a quick fix.

You can pause the Dermatica subscription or change delivery dates to 50-60 days. I did this as wasn’t getting through it despite using 5 days a week.

Keep going with it. It takes a very long time. You may not notice the difference now but one day in the future you will x

I’m on a retinol serum and have noticed no reaction and no difference. It’s only been a few weeks though. I think I’ll continue as the reviews are excellent and I’m hoping at some point I’ll look twenty years younger 🤭

It depends how old you are. If you're in your 20's or 30's and have no wrinkles you won't see much change I suppose.

I'm 50 with no wrinkles and have used a retinol for a couple of years. I have clear bright skin and still no wrinkles so I guess it's probably helping along with the rest of my skincare.

For blackheads and spots Paula's Choice BHA 2% skin perfecting lotion is what you want.

PerfidiousAlbion · 10/11/2020 12:46

Ive used Retinol for years with no difference. I think you need to start in your late 20s/early 30s.

‘Hotnflashy’ on youtube has been using it for years and she looks no different (despite thinking she does - I think thats the Botox and fillers though).

I was using Dermatica (retinol and niacinamide) for 4 months, which was ok. Have switched to Face Theory Regenacalm Serum S1 Pro which has '3% Encapsulated Retinoid'. Not exactly sure if that is the same thing but totally rate the results, skin smoother and clearer. Only issue I have is the pipette dropper doesnt work very well.

Delatron · 10/11/2020 18:00

Dermatica is actually Retin-A not retinol so much stronger than anything you can get over the counter.

Their formulations are good though so you don’t get the peeling you can get with other creams.

Anything else; retinol, retinal, retinoid will not be as strong or have the same level of research behind it. That’s not to say they won’t be nice creams and have a positive impact on the skin. Many people can’t tolerate full strength Retin-a so need these weaker formulations.

Gwenhwyfar · 12/11/2020 18:54

You're talking about Retin-A, not retinol. Much stronger isn't it? I have a tube of Retirides and I haven't noticed a different to my wrinkles apart from having more of them as time goes by, but there is proper science behind it.

I swapped to skin and me and saw more results. Some people prefer it to dermatica
