Greasy pre-teen. Help!

Hi wise women.

My 12-year old DS has recently become incredibly greasy.

He's getting spots and greasy skin. I know this is totally normal for his age. And he smells! His room just has a fug.

I've bought him the olive oil solid face wash from lush which seems ok.

Mainly though I'm looking for advice on his hair. It's not long - long but there's quite a lot of it and my shampoo just doesn't seem to cut through.

He showers regularly but his hair is greasy the same day. I use a lush solid shampoo. I try to minimise my own shampoo use and have barely used shampoo on the kids, or save it until it 'needs' washing but now of course is an unavoidable necessity.

I have a feeling that he's not rinsing properly but he says he is and at his age I don't get in the shower with him (but have considered doing his hair for him while he's in there).

Anyway, that's a long winder way of asking for a recommendation for a shampoo that rinses easily and cuts through grease!

I'd prefer a solid if poss but will but plastic bottles if necessary.

My son uses L’Oréal Elvive Clay shampoo. It’s the only one that works for his greasy hair.

Original vosene or herbal essences green apple

Since my 14yr old dd has stopped using shampoo and only uses conditioner her hair is less greasy.

Nothing touches the smell from her feet unfortunately- they stink and make the room smell.

zatarontoast · 09/11/2020 19:58

I have a dd who is exactly the same, her hair is like an oil slick the day after washing it. Vosene was suggested on here and I bought it with scepticism as I've tried everything. I'm pleased to say it is great, she gathers it and leaves it for 2-3 minutes before finding them conditions just the ends. She can now go 3 days between washes.

Dd started getting v greasy hairZ I do suspect she wasn't rinsing well but she wasn't putting conditioner at the roots where it was worst anyway. I got her head and shoulders 2 in 1 and it's been lovely every since. More full bodied than ever and shiny not greasy

I love the range by Sam Farmer - a dad who's a dermatologist who is really plain speaking and has a range for teenage skin that isn't marketed for stereotypes of girls or boys - have a look at www.samfarmer.co/. I like his no-nonsense scientific stance.

pinkbalconyrailing · 09/11/2020 21:28

it's normal for boys that age to be greasy.
do you observe him showering?
is he actually using shampoo and enough of it?
one of my teens was known for extremely short showers, barely getting wet at that age. and using a pea size amount of schampoo Hmm

for the face, try warm water & flannel at first. if the spots bother him acetylsalicylic acid (sp?) stuff. own brand supermarket/pharmacy is fine.

Thanks good advice and will also check out the Sam Farmer range.

Yep I do think he's really washing he spends enough time in there but probably isn't rinsing well enough.

The solid shampoos are an effort to use so the vosene or head and shoulders likely to be better for him anyway.

Try boots build up remover shampoo
It's cheap and leaves hair squeeky clean

PepsiLola · 10/11/2020 23:24

Dry shampoos! God send for grease.

I have fine greasy hair as an adult, dry shampoo is like deodorant to me. I pop some in when I have dried my hair, give it a rub to stop it looking grey, and it ensures that by the end of the day my hair still looks ok.

I also avoid conditioner around my roots, and use a clarifying shampoo once a week (seems to get out all the grease and my hair feels squeaky clean after).

I'm not faithful to a brand. I generally use what's on offer

My adult DS has longish, thick, curly hair and used to have the same problem with shampoo being difficult to rinse out. He now uses Herbal Essences White Tea and Mint - both the shampoo and the conditioner - and his hair looks better than it has for ages.

Ds uses L'Oréal elvive for men. Think its a 2in1
