Performance winter coat brands for teenagers

My 17yo son wants a really warm and waterproof winter coat for xmas. We live in Scotland so needs to be good for down to temps below zero. What performance brands should I be looking at if you know what I mean? I am clueless and the only one I know is North Face. Is that stylish for teenagers???

Lands End Squall Parkas. My teenagers love them and we live in an area with very harsh winters.

Canada goose (pricy though)
Ma strum (also expensive)
Super dry
Fjallraven

North Face is pretty solid option though

I have a marmot water/windproof and I know they do warm jackets as well. They're really good quality and mine has lasted 4 winters of constant wear

Also check out Finisterre which has eco credentials too

Definitely not North Face here!

Plus their quality has gone way down since they were a proper technical brand.

I second marmot and avoid north face

Rab?

Penfield

Napaprijri (I think that’s you you spell it?). We’re in Scotland.

Sorry to be thick, but what is a performance brand please?

CallmeFP · 10/11/2020 23:47

Woolrich is good.

My favourite performance brands are Patagonia followed by Arc'teryx - I'm 30 now but I've been wearing those brands since my teens. I'm not sure if they are 'stylish' per say but most people I ski/hike with (from teens to older adults) seem to wear them.

TTCAbroad · 11/11/2020 06:37

@AcornAutumn - It usually means the garments are specially engineered for specific activities ie: hiking/skiing/mountaineering for performance outerwear. By specially engineered I mean that the designers took into account the actions a person goes through during an activity (ie arm movements/bending at the waist and legs) as well as the climate the person would be doing the activity in. Are you in sub-zero? Does it need to be waterproof and wind resistant? Is it sweat wicking?

Hope that makes sense!

Thank you TTC.
