Is the Dyson Airwrap really worth the price?

I discovered the Revlon One Step a few months ago, and now I’ve got the hang of it, I’m impressed. But the Dyson keeps catching my eye, but what’s so special about it? I have a shoulder length bob which is fairly straight.

I think it's worth it if you like to wear your hair curled but I was underwhelmed by the straight attachments personally.

LightUpLetters · 08/11/2020 11:50

It’s crap.

I bought it with the 30 day trial from Dyson and sent it back after 3 uses.

My hair is easy to style and the curl would not stay in. By the time I was on the other side of my head, the first side that I had done had dropped out.

I tried all the tricks to get it to stay in and nothing worked! I also watched loads of YouTube videos on it and still couldn’t get it to do what it was suppose to do!

My hairdresser said that heat is needed to style hair and that’s why it’s rubbish

LucyLatimer · 08/11/2020 11:52

Mine is on eBay right now and I’m back to hairdryer and tongs. I really wanted to like it but couldn’t get an even result and curls that lasted - too much blowing about

Eileithyiaa · 08/11/2020 12:12

I think it depends on your hair type and to what degree it will make your life easier.

I have thick curly hair and the Airwrap was a godsend in terms of drying and straightening my hair. I no longer have to use straighteners and my hair is in good condition.

The curls also stay in my hair for 5 days.

If you have relatively straight hair anyway and if your hair is quite fine, the curls will struggle to stay in unless you use product prior to curling. Plus with straight hair, you won't feel the time benefit of using the straightening attachment, so I wouldn't splash the cash in your shoes.

Revlon One is streets ahead. I feel like an ‘80’s supermodel when I use mine 😂

SorrelForbes · 08/11/2020 13:55

I've had mine nearly two years, use it almost every day and my hair has never been in better condition.

It does take a while to get used to and it was probably took about a fortnight's use before I really fell in love with it. The curl attachments work in a very different way to usual tongs/wands. However, I can't do curls with those so perhaps this just suits me better!

If you follow the instructions, it absolutely works properly. You have to do the curls on wet hair (mine will work on dry hair but they don't stay very curly, more wavy) and then they last. It gets very hot, that's why there are little cools tips on the curl attachments. The round brush becomes almost untouchable from the heat yet my hair seems less heat damaged.

Not exactly unanimous rave reviews then ..... !

No imo. I've had the hairdryer for a few years now and I really rate it.

My hair is fine but there's quite a lot of it and it has a slight kink. The 'curlers' fried the ends of my hair as that's the bit that gets the most heat as you twirl it around them. I also found it took an age to dry my hair. I did like the straightening brush but I couldn't justify keeping it for that so I returned it.

My hair took quite a while to recover. The hairdryer otoh makes your hair feel very smooth.

It's a shame as I really wanted to like the Airwrap.

Same.

I love mine. Only thing I’ve ever managed to curl my own hair with. My hair is fine and prone to breakage but since using the Dyson is in much better condition.

haveaglassofwine · 09/11/2020 12:48

A few months ago I ordered the Airwrap from Dyson and loved it, it dries my mid length normal/thick hair poker straight in 12 mins from soaking wet, no need for straighteners. I can dry it curly in less than 30 mins and the curls last all day, the following day it looks wavy, I returned it under their 35 day return policy because I couldn't justify the price. I already had the Dyson hair dryer and didn't feel I needed both.

I went back to using my Dyson hairdryer but really missed the Airwrap, so much so that I reordered it after 2 weeks.

My hair is in much better condition then it has ever been, I've decided to sell my Dyson hair dryer as I haven't used it since September and I cant see that I will go back to using it.

It is worth ordering from Dyson or QVC as both offer the refund guarantee if you don't like it.

ChrissyPlummer · 09/11/2020 12:55

No it isn’t. Got one two years ago. I had thick, shoulder-length hair at the time. If I curled it with the Babyliss Secret Curl, bendy rollers or my Aurora Band, I’d get 2/3 days out of it. The Airwrap, I’d be lucky to get three hours and that was following instructions/tutorials. It also took ages.

I do like the dryer and when I had a Bob, the smoothing brush was good. I wish I’d just got the dryer TBH, though the dryer from the Airwrap is OK as I now have a pixie.

ajandjjmum · 09/11/2020 13:10

DD treated herself to one during the first lockdown. She is very disappointed with it. Literally the first time she curled her (fine, straight) hair, went downstairs and said to DH 'what do you think?', and his response was 'what's different?' The curl had literally dropped out within minutes.

She has watch tutorials etc., but has virtually given up.

KatharinaRosalie · 09/11/2020 14:40

Love mine. I have fine hair and this one is so easy to use, takes me 3 minutes to get just-out-of-hairdressers bouncy look.
I don't massively rate it for getting proper tight corkscrew curls though - I think that's why so many people are disappointed. I use it to give my hair volume and to curl the ends under. For this it's brilliant - as the air flow pulls hairs in instead of out, my hair is super smooth and glossy without any of the usual flyaways.

PegasusReturns · 09/11/2020 23:08

I’m ambivalent about it although I use it every day.

I think I get a better “blow dry” using my baby kiss bighair and better curls using Ghds but my hair is definitely in better condition so I persevere.

SorrelForbes · 10/11/2020 13:23

I find these comments really odd as I've used it to do curls on family members and friends, all with very different hair types and the curls last at least two days. I have fine hair (but a lot of it) which tends to frizz and has a natural (not nice!) wave/kink and the curls last two days and there will still be a wave on the third day (but I tend to wash it again by then). I've done my sister's hair which is very coarse and wiry and got the same results. I think the trick is doing it from wet, using a heat protector and product, heating each curl for 15 sec min and then doing a cool shot for the same amount of time (at least).

As I said above though, I can't do GHD curls at all. But tbh, I don't like them that much as they looks a bit angular and flat. My curls with the Airwrap are glossy and bouncy.

maryhadalittle · 10/11/2020 13:46

I had a look at it and god almighty, it's £450. I have thick, frizzy and a lot of hair. I have a toddler and would like to not spend that much time with it but I also want to get rid of the mum bun. Would the air wrap help or do you know of any other products that will help but cost less? Sorry op to hijack your thread but I'm really following it with interest and I also want to know whether paying £450 would actually deliver results just like you :)

ChrissyPlummer · 10/11/2020 15:38

SorrelForbes I tried that but when my hair was wet it just did nothing. I found I had to get the exact right sweet spot between too wet or too dry, which was impossible for the amount of hair I’ve got. I had to keep spraying it with water.

It was just too much faff for next to no pay off. The whole point was to make doing my hair quicker and easier and it took longer and didn’t look that good! I expected the style to at least last the full day. I feel terribly guilty as DH bought it as a present and it was SO expensive and I only use the dryer now.

TheWindowDonkey · 10/11/2020 15:45

Curls last 5 minutes. I like the drying bit, but its a bloody expensive hair dryer. Very dissapointing.

Luckystar1 · 10/11/2020 16:08

I love mine. I’ve had it almost 2 years. I have very thick, mid neck length hair.

It dries and styles it in a fraction of the time. I very rarely ‘curl’ it, but I think it’s worth pointing out that the ‘curl’ is meant to be not so much a curl but a bouncy blow dry effect.

I haven’t used any other hair appliance since I got it.

I very often get complimented on my hair and asked if I’ve had it done after using it.

CrapFlowers · 11/11/2020 07:08

I don’t understand this comment as the Dyson gets so hot!!

Twilightstarbright · 11/11/2020 08:52

Love mine. I've got fine straight collarbone length hair and it dries it straight but not ghd ironed straight. The curls stay in nicely.

HikerBiker · 11/11/2020 11:30

The smoothing brushes didn’t work on my wavy, frizzy medium-fine hair. They left my hair looking and feeling very fuzzy and bristly.

The curling attachments did work for me, but I wouldn’t have the patience to use them frequently enough to justify the cost. Had to return them.
