Help - Teenage hair dye fail!!

DorsetCamping · 07/11/2020 13:54

Unbeknownst to me DD (13) tried to dye the front section of her long hair, black over half term.

She has brown hair and in her wisdom, when the first application didn't take, she tried 3 more times!

The end result is far from black - it's blue/green!Shock

School have gone mad, no hairdressers open to correct it. It's supposed to be semi permanent but nothing semi about it. She has washed it literally dozens of times since dyeing it, but nothing is shifting the bloody colour!

School now threatening her with isolation on Monday if it's not out. WTF can I do?!!

Tried various shampoos and even washing up liquid (advice from somewhere). Anything else I haven't thought of?

Is she able to hide the section tying it back or some sort of up do? Or is the section to big?

Babyfg · 07/11/2020 13:57

Or one of those colour sprays that cover grey?

Leftrightatthelights · 07/11/2020 13:57

Tell the school to grow up. Surely there are worse things than hair which is different colour. In the grand scheme of all things.

Knittedfairies · 07/11/2020 13:59

A wide Alice band/scarf thing?

She has been tying it up/tucking it under but no hiding that green!

Reminds me of when I used 'Sun In' back in the day and instead of beach blonde, my hair turned ginger Grin

Has she tried a few washes with anti-danfruff shampoo? It might not remove the colour completely but might fade it somewhat.

chillied · 07/11/2020 14:02

What would happen if you dyed that section brown with home hair dye? Or do you fear that the hair is so damaged that it would go further wrong?

You'd think! Part of me thinks she should face the music though as she deliberately went behind my back. I'd agreed we would give it a go together but over a long school holiday (so mistakes could be dealt with) not a 1 week half term Hmm

Loathe to put any more dye in for making it worse/wrecking her hair

Use a colour remover, they’re on sale in boots at the mo. (I know this as I just removed my covid purple!)

Kcar · 07/11/2020 14:03

Try the hair dye remove stuff? You get it in the chemist.

shreddednips · 07/11/2020 14:04

I did an awful dye job at the same age and my mum washed my hair repeatedly with fairy liquid. I can't say it got rid of it but it certainly toned it down, although I have no idea if it is advisable!

Could you just dye all of her hair something close to her usual brown colour to cover up the front section?

chillied · 07/11/2020 14:04

Is the "greenness" because she used a dye with bleach in it? I would have thought, to go brown / black, no bleach is needed. You could try 1 small section today with brown dye, in fact double up as the patch test?

Thank you, Hadn't realised there was such a product. Will trek into town later to see if I can find some

What a good idea I'm sure that will help Hmm

Send her ....
Not that easy sadly, 30 mins drive. No buses. Will make her pay me back in chores!!

As if the school are just going to change their whole policy because a parent tells them to 'grow up'.

A lot of secondary schools have rules on hair. As do many workplaces.

Good idea on the hair dye remover stuff. Anne Of Green Gables dyed her hair green when she was trying to dye it black! Raven black. Marilla cut it off.

Lollypop701 · 07/11/2020 14:37

In normal times I’d agree with school, but as hair salons are shut it’s a bit Ott!

dementedpixie · 07/11/2020 14:39

What hair dye did she use?

Whysrumgone · 07/11/2020 14:41

I’m confused how black dye didn’t work on brown hair??

FatGirlShrinking · 07/11/2020 14:49

I'm assuming she has naturally blonde hair, black dye has a lot of blue in it so when combined with a yellow base you end up with green.

Honestly the best best is to bleach and tone it, colour remover will leave a ginger result, it will not take it all the way back to its natural colour.

You can use bicarb mixed into a paste, fairy liquid or tomato ketchup which may help to fade and reduce some of the green tint but it will take bleach to fully remove.

dementedpixie · 07/11/2020 14:50

OP said she has brown hair and used semi permanent dye. What hair dye was it?

FatGirlShrinking · 07/11/2020 14:51

Oh and tell school that while just appreciate DD has been a prat, she's used a permanent dye, hairdressers are shut and you're not willing to chop a big section of her hair off so they're just going to have to accept that this has happened and let it go.

Fieldofyellowflowers · 07/11/2020 14:54

The school is being a bit ridiculous to threaten her with isolation when all the hairdressers are shut due to lockdown.
