I know a lot of people advise wearing SPF or facial moisturiser containing SPF every day but I was just wondering how long the sun protection actually lasts? Is it like regular sun cream that you have to reapply every 2 hours and do you actually reapply your moisturiser every two hours?! Or do you just assume that the protection will last all day (like Soltan Once or the other once a day sunscreens you might wear on holiday)? Or are there face creams that guarantee/claim that the SPF part of the cream lasts all day? I want to start using SPF daily but I don’t want to buy something that’s only going to be good for A couple of hours!

There’s some info here: www.carolinehirons.com/2015/07/spf-cheat-sheet-2.html

The advice is basically that we should be reapplying, personally I don’t because I get very little sun exposure (especially this time of year) so I just rely on what I put on in the morning. If I was going to be outside all day I would reapply.

Lowcarbbarb · 02/11/2020 13:09

Thanks that’s really helpful. I’m thinking regular moisturiser plus separate sunscreen is the way to go now!

i reapply about three hourly, it helps that the products that make me need sunscreen have made my skin more presentable without makeup. I've no idea what people who wear day time foundation do I've often wondered. I have a tube in my car, a tube in my desk at work and one in my bathroom so can't be caught without it. I use Nivea shine control spf50 or eclat spf50 from Amazon both about £7 a tube and lasts forever when you have thee tubes on the go.

This soort of thing has proved a game changer for reapplication. Keep in the car.

I use L'Oréal cream with spf30. I've never reapplied and never been burnt. I do try to wear a hat if I'm outside for long though.

Apileofballyhoo · 02/11/2020 21:58

Get a stand alone SPF. You need to apply quite a lot. I think most people only reapply if they've been in direct sunlight for 2 hours.

FlyingByTheSeatof · 03/11/2020 00:30

If this helps I'm 50 and have no wrinkles. I wore either moisturiser with spf or foundation with spf pretty much every day of my life since I was a teenager. I never topped it up.

On a beach holiday I would obvs top up every couple of hours esp after swimming.
I dont actually like wearing a seperate spf over my moisturiser as they all seem to irritate my skin so even now with all the advice being rammed down my throat I don't wear one although I've tried loads out and even now I'm using retinol and AHA and BHA I still dont have any wrinkles or brown spots of freckles.

I am 48 and have no wrinkles or pigmentation issues either. I also live in a hot and sunny part of Australia. I use SPF 30 every day, when I know sun exposure is incindental, and plop on a hat for hanging out washing, etc. If I’m at the markets or the beach where the sun is going to beating on me (rare, because I loathe it) I wear spf 50 and cover up as much skin as possible. I reapply religiously if I am outside for extended periods. (It’s usually too damn hot!) I wear my spf from my hairline, over my ears and neck and over my cleavage. I have worn it ever since high school because we have genetic melanoma in my family. I am especially careful to always wear good sunglasses. Despite all this, I am usually still quite tanned. Go figure!!! I use tretinoin at night now too.

FrappuccinoFan · 03/11/2020 01:57

I use Kiehl’s facial sunscreen (over my moisturiser). It is SPF50.

I don’t reapply throughout the day as I tend to wear makeup. However if I was somewhere sunny/in summer I generally skip makeup and reapply sunscreen throughout the day as I would spend more time outdoors.

At this time of the year (pre COVID) I would usually both leave home and return when it’s dark outside (spending all day inside my office) so it’s not a big deal if I don’t constantly reapply it. I still wear it daily without fail though.

IsAWookieABear · 03/11/2020 10:19

I use the calypso 8 hr sunblock once in winter/ twice (reapply midday) in summer. I'm assuming it works because I've done this on sunny holidays and not changed colour! I kind of pat it on for 2nd application, doesn't really affect makeup.

CleverCatty · 03/11/2020 10:24

I always wear La Roche Posay SPF 50 I think it is. Apply in morning leave it. I almost always wear foundation with or without spf in it afterwards which I was told gives an extra barrier.

On hot holidays - I wear more SPF but less foundation during the day.

When I have gone a couple of months without wearing it - did as a sort of test - when I went to a makeup hall the SA/MA noticed but just said 'you've 'tanned''.

GetOuttaMyPub · 03/11/2020 10:26

I wear factor 50 sunscreen every day, but only apply once unless I’m going to be out in direct sunlight for hours.

On holiday or for a day out in the summer, for example, I reapply frequently as I burn easily.

CleverCatty · 03/11/2020 10:26

This is what I've done for a few years as I didn't trust the levels of SPF in most moisturisers - used Clinique moisturiser with SPF 25 for a few years.

The way applying spf after moisturiser works - for me - is you can control how much and what level spf you like and what moisturiser too.

KnightsofColumbusThatHurt · 03/11/2020 10:29

I really wouldn't worry about re-applying tbh. I wear SPF every day now but I don't bother re-applying - of course the brands are going to tell you you need to reapply every 5 minutes as they want you to get through their product as quickly as possible and buy more! But unless its a really hot sunny day, you are outside all day, or have had your face in the water a lot, I doubt its really necessary.

Anotheruser02 · 03/11/2020 15:08

How long does foundation last on you OP? I have significant oil breakthrough making mine slide by lunchtime. I've often thought if I had dryer skin it would drink up products better. My 8am sunscreen will not be deflecting 3:30pm UVA's.

unebaguettepastropcuite · 03/11/2020 15:11

I use an Avene face cream with spf. It's generally enough for me to just apply it in the morning. Obviously if I'm going to be out in the sun for extended periods of time I add sunscreen.

DannyGlickWindowTapping · 03/11/2020 15:17

I use Ultrasun spf50. It's designed to last all day, like their standard sunscreen.

MidnightFlit · 03/11/2020 15:46

I also put a thin layer of Ultrasun SPF30 on cleansed skin in the morning and then moisturiser/make-up on top. I'm assuming once a day is enough, especially in the UK autumn-spring.
