Should I cut my own hair in lockdown?

First world problem, obvs.

I hate going to the hairdressers, but have found one particular woman who I like. My appointment in March was cancelled due to lockdown. Once the salon reopened it took me months to get an appointment with her (she's working on reduced capacity, I'm working full time), so I have very much been looking forward to getting my hair cut... this Saturday. I have sent begging messages to see if I can be squeezed in, but I am seriously contemplating 'having a go' myself (there's a YouTube video of pulling the ponytail to the front of the face which is my homework on the subject).

Do I need to hide the scissors from myself?

Don't do it!

ZaraW · 02/11/2020 08:51

I did mine, it was just a trim and looks fine. I have hairdressing scissors which help.

I have cut mine a few of times now and it looks fine. Brad Mondo's YouTube videos are excellent, watch a couple of times before you start!

I cut my own hair , if you use the ponytail cut, pull a few hairs out at the side of your face, so these don't end up too short.

KnightsofColumbusThatHurt · 02/11/2020 17:12

Yes just do it yourself, it's pretty easy really. But for Christ's sake, only do a very small bit at a time, and keep taking the pony tail out to check, otherwise according to one MNetter I remember from years ago, you will end up looking like Cadfael!

I used to do my own with the ponytail method and it was fine.

Really important with the ponytail method is to not pull it to front like a unicorn or you will end up with a mullet! I divide mine and the hair behind my ears goes in a ponytail on the top of my head towards the back. One snip and lovely long layers. I do the unicorn ponytail just with the front section (in front of my ears)to feather it round my face but that's just because I like it like that at the moment. I've been doing mine for years. As someone already said, just take off a little bit first 🙂

Invest in proper hairdressers scissors and watch Brad mondo for tips.

Personally I wouldn’t.

I have done it three or four times since lockdown. Its so easy if you just want to cut the length.

Part your hair down the middle. Bring each side forward under your chin like pigtails. Put them together as one put a band around it. Draw the band down and then cut. Done. It will be straight across.

Thanks for the replies - I've managed to dodge the bullet for now by getting one of the last appointments available at an expensive salon nearby... but will refer to this thread in future...

I need a picture of this. You have one ponytail under your chin? And where do you cut? I can't picture how this gives you a straight cut?

My DH has been cutting mine. It's been looking ok.

I've cut my own hair since the first lockdown, it looks OK, it depends how fussy you are!

OpheIiaBaIls · 02/11/2020 18:27

I've cut my own hair for 20 years, since a hairdresser friend showed me how to do it myself. If I just want a trim, I comb my damp hair and put it into a tight ponytail at the nape of my neck. Then I pull the hairband down the length of the ponytail and snip off the last couple of centimetres. Repeat until everything's the same length (ie comb/retie the tail/slide/snip). I used the same method recently to lop a good few inches off and now I have a lovely slightly inverted long bob.

I can do fringes/side fringes/layers... I cut DH's hair too. DD is 25 and has never been to a hairdresser because she likes the way I cut her hair!

OpheIiaBaIls · 02/11/2020 18:28

I will add though that good quality scissors are a must. I replace mine regularly but I've saved so much on going to the hairdresser I don't mind!

Goodlockdownhair · 02/11/2020 18:30

It depends how long your hair is, past shoulder length you can get away with cutting your own hair.
I was just admiring a friends hair at the weekend and she had just cut it herself.

GreyHare · 02/11/2020 18:54

Do not follow Brad Mondo he is crap, depends what style your hair is, I feel your pain, I had mine cut end of January was about to book in but lockdown happened and was considering try to book in in the next few weeks as my hair really needs a cut but again we are locked down, so I'm just going to go with the flow and maybe see what happens if I don't get a haircut in a year.

Jumbojem · 02/11/2020 19:10

I cut mine in lockdown and since I was going next week for my birthday cut I guess I'll be doing my own again! After watching various YouTube videos I did two pigtails, brought them to the front and put a band on each where they were level a few cm up my hair. I then made vertical snips into my hair up to the band length. This gives a softer edge than the straight snip method. It did result in a very slight V at the back of my hair where I'd brought it forward but my hair is past my shoulders so wasn't that noticeable. OH could have snipped it straight for me. I have sharp small hair scissors though which probably also makes a difference.
