Duac once daily

Anyone got experiences with this?

I'm nearly 30 and since coming off the pill a few years ago have been suffering from mild-moderate acne, mostly on my cheeks but also on my forehead.

Tried acnecide gel for about 3 months, it maybe slightly helps? But nowhere near enough! My skin is quite sensitive but had no irritation with the benzoyl peroxide. Im also using Quinoderm wash.

I've ordered Duac 5% because I have had enough now!

Any experiences greatly appreciated!

This is exactly the combination my daughter is currently using. She washes with quinoderm and uses duac cream at night. It’s been much better than acnecide for her. She’s 13 so completely different age but it’s really helping her face. She gets the cream on prescription - I didn’t realise you could buy it.

I'm using duac op. 36, no pill issues etc just always had very inflamed skin.

It's helping me HUGELY.

One thing to bear in mind though; it will bleach absolutely everything it comes into contact with so keep a separate face cloth/white sheets!

whatsbinhappnin · 31/10/2020 18:53

Thanks @Crispsareafoodgroup, that's helpful to know even though I'm much older Grin weirdly I didn't have acne as a teenager.

You can't buy it but it's available from online doctors/pharmacies so have ordered from Boots. £30 a tube but will be much cheaper than trying thousands of non medicated products that don't work!

Thanks @fogginghell, that's the benzoyl peroxide. Took a while to work out what was happening to my face towels! Very patchy now. Will be replacing with white....

So glad it's helping you though!

Yes, it bleaches everything Hmm

fogginghell · 31/10/2020 19:16

Yes it is , I'm on duac once daily which has the BP , it can even dye hair/eyebrows apparently , no thanks to that ! ShockGrin

I have used this for 15 years and would recommend. I am a good 20 years older than you OP and one might hope spots are gone, but sadly no, although they are much, much better with Duac. I find it has remarkable powers of making spots disappear before they come up if you dab a tiny bit on straight away (outwith the once a day pattern). Doesn't work very time, but pretty often. I buy the big tubes from an online pharmacy as my GP practice was told not to prescribe it many, many years ago (£ decision) and as I only use it on a small area of my face they last for a year (keep in the fridge).

stevalnamechanger · 31/10/2020 20:34

There are FAR superior acne treatments than Duac I am afraid.

I would firstly sign up to Dermatica ( first month is 3.50 after that circa 20 a month) they will look at photos of your acne and compound you the right prescription.

Further to this if you can afford it I'd direct you to a Derm, I go to Dr Natalia Spierlings.

I have a lot of experience with my own acne and tried most topical products so happy to try help too . My face is now clear finally!

stevalnamechanger · 31/10/2020 20:36

I would cleanse with LRP toleriane. LRP sunscreen in the am.

PM . Acne treatment and toleriane moisturizer.

I would do nights on and off the acne treatment and cover your face in cicaplast baume to make sure you are hydrating and not risking compromising your skin barrier which will likely make acne worse.

I would also recommend joining dr sam buntings skincare club facebook group as its an incredibly knowledgeable and supportive group

whatsbinhappnin · 31/10/2020 20:38

@fogginghell Eek! Luckily I'm blonde!!!

How long did it take before you saw any difference?

NerdyBird · 31/10/2020 20:46

Duac helped me but I did end up reacting to it. Maybe build up to daily use or put a light moisturiser on first. I've had at least 18 months without it and with maskne flaring up on my chin I pop a blob on the spot, leave for about 10 mins then wash off. Even that seems to help. I also find Azeleic Acid good for acne.

whatsbinhappnin · 31/10/2020 22:55

Good to know it can be used as a 'spot' treatment too

Looking forward to it arriving! My skin is used to benzoyl peroxide but will probably start with alternate day application in case of any reaction.

Ha ha dd asked me why her grey pillows had pink patches! I said it was bleach but didn’t know what from, now I do!

whatsbinhappnin · 31/10/2020 23:02

@Karwomannghia mystery solved!

For my dd, using duac her red, sore & infected acne almost disappeared overnight.

PurpleSweetPeas · 01/11/2020 09:58

I'm 41, it took me until I was 40 to deal with my awful skin and Duac has been such a game changer. It sounds silly but now my skin isn't as awful I feel more confident. I wear less makeup up which then helps break the cycle even more.
I'm quite worried my drs might stop prescribing but then it's great to know I can but elsewhere.
I second the lady who puts it on when she feels a spot coming - really works

whatsbinhappnin · 01/11/2020 10:33

@happymum12345 that's reassuring to know, I'm so glad it's worked for her!

@purplesweetpeas what did you try before? I've put up with it for a few years now hoping it would go away by itself but clearly that's not going to happen. I would love to be able to wear no make up as it makes my skin even oilier and I have to keep wiping it throughout the day. I have had enough...

OP posts:
PurpleSweetPeas · 01/11/2020 11:40

@whatsbinhappnin I didn't use anything. I left it thinking it wouldn't get better and I'd be doomed to a life of awful skin. I plucked up the courage to ask the GP and she was wonderful. 12 months later I go makeup free at least half the time. Lockdown was good for not wearing any for ages and that really helped.
I use Duac in the evening before bed and clears up rapid treatment in the day as goes under moisturiser better.
I've also found using a dry skin moisturiser better which has stopped my skin getting oily as it was really dry and over compensating

stevalnamechanger · 01/11/2020 21:39

Also using Duac you need to wear daily suncreen . ( you should anyway) x

Hi all, for anyone else hunting for the same things, I thought I would share my experience. I came off the pill a year ago as we want to have a baby. In August / Sept I started getting hormonal acne on the chin and my jaw line. I would say it’s mild to moderate, however it has really affected me as I have gone from having flawless skin, never needing make up and having a simple routine to having none of that.

I wasn’t sure it was hormonal to begin with and it could have been worsened by some dodgy recommended skincare from an influence (I know, I know). Anyway, I switched to La Roche Posey effeclar gentle cleanser and to the Matt sebo control moisturiser. I still use the Clinique smart serum too. I use the La Roche Posey clay mask which helps to really calm my skin and after this, my skin always looks less irritated - I do this 3 times a week, just on the acne area, not the whole face. All this has helped massively but I couldn’t stop the spots from coming up, I could just control them once they were there and treat them more quickly. For quick treatment of a nasty one raising its head, I use ZitKilla which are so so so good - they seem to reduce inflammation and make them disappear from one patch… sometimes they expose a white head which I pop and then clean thoroughly.

I spoke to the doctors because I just felt like I couldn’t fully get on top of it and I was beginning to scar / have very dark patches. They prescribed DUAC end whilst GOD IT WORKS I have come out in a really itchy reaction. I’m not allergic to anything and never react with things, but I have small tiny raised skin bumps and lots of itching. I think perhaps I used it on too wider area which it does say to do, but it seems to be bloody strong stuff. I am taking some days off of it and then I’ll use a tiny amount going forward, just on the bad area - hopefully I won’t have to, but incase!

If you are looking for something that actually works without spending £250 on a dermatologist, try if, but sparingly! As we are trying for a baby, I couldn’t try anything oral. Hope this helps someone xx

Fluffycloudland77 · 12/12/2021 20:31

Allergies get worse with exposure so if you are itching you need to stop using it really. If you think you’ve used too much (I do that all the time) try leaving it 20 minutes after washing to apply it.

It doesn’t matter what the cause of acne is, the treatments are the same. Just like any other pathology the cause doesn’t matter it’s what treatment they can give you that counts.

All acne’s hormonal isn’t it? Kids eat crap food and are mucky little sods but they don’t get spots if they exist on nuggets and pop.

FlyOnTheWall89 · 12/12/2021 20:44

@Fluffycloudland77 yes I have stopped using it for now. It’s not really improved over the course of the day annoyingly. I hoped it would calm down but I have this rough texture to my skin now and it’s itchy. I think it feels worse than it looks but I don’t want to continue to use it for now. If I do use it again, it will be just around the spots and super super thinly.

Any idea how to sooth / calm the skin? Feels weird to put moisturiser on but I have because I have read so many things saying it needs hydrating. I have used an oil free light weight one.

Fluffycloudland77 · 12/12/2021 20:58

Personally I’d just leave it alone now, it can cause irritation to add more products.
