In my 40s, will my skin ever be the same again

MissMiss1 · 30/10/2020 21:31

Since reaching my mid 40s my skin has totally changed
It's dehydrated, dull and saggy, with crepey eyes
I want hydration, a glow and plump skin

What do you use that helps you?
What can give me back my glow?
What can help my dehydrated eyes?

Water. Water. Water.

NameChange84 · 30/10/2020 21:45

I’m 36 but La Roche Posay Hydraphase is good for under eyes, mine look well rested,
lighter and healthier.

Hyaluronic acid on damp skin plus a rich night cream make a big difference. I like Vichy products but NiveaQ10 range is excellent value and I see a big difference from their sleep mask.

And yes, water and water rich foods!

justanotherneighinparadise · 30/10/2020 21:50

Why damp skin? 🤔

Pikachubaby · 30/10/2020 21:56

It binds the water.

Hyaluronic scud is a good quick fix (improves appearance, but nothing really changes the texture)

Imo, there is not much you can do really. Most women realise this in their early 50s or thereabouts.

Women in their 20s/39s and early 40s will rave about all kinds of lotions and potions, but really, the best thing is to have a healthy weight, do exercise, get fresh air, healthy diet, sleep enough, don’t drink (much) don’t sunbathe and don’t smoke

A cream with a bit of hyaluronic acid or glycerine will help it look less dry. So give your skin some TLC, but ultimately what you put on your skin does not make a huge difference

justanotherneighinparadise · 30/10/2020 22:06

Is it the same with retinol?

FlyingByTheSeatof · 30/10/2020 22:12

Hyalauronic acid, ceramides and retinol.

NameChange84 · 30/10/2020 22:26

@justanotherneighinparadise

Is it the same with retinol?
Sorry, don’t know, don’t use it.
Pikachubaby · 30/10/2020 22:46

People rave about retinol

To me it’s as if it burns if a small layer of dead skin? Made my face red and sore, so it def does something Grin

But don’t listen to me, I am old and past believing in skin care regimens.... listen to the under-50s for messages of hope and optimism

PlanDeRaccordement · 30/10/2020 22:58

SPF 30 minimum every day.
Most of skin aging is due to UV exposure.

Livedandlearned · 30/10/2020 23:14

I do try to drink water as it does help.

I use a serum after moisturising every night and sometimes in the morning.

I'm 41 and my skin went a bit rubbish too, it took me a while to sort out but it's looking much better now.

Craftycorvid · 31/10/2020 09:56

Over 50 and still keeping on with the skincare. I always looked younger than I was until my early 40s when I lost a lot of weight and my face seemed to age ten years in ten months. It was a stressful time too, so that probably didn’t help. I used to have a chubby face and a double chin and I was left with a thinner, drawn-looking face and loose skin under my chin. What helped: CACI facials for as long as I could afford them, it’s a subtle effect but did make a difference to firmness. Sun block, especially in summer. Water. Stopped drinking alcohol. Finding products that suit me by experimenting. My most recent finds: Prai neck cream (the night cream seems a bit better than the day one) Lacura Caviar day cream (but only has spf 15). I also use a Nuface microcurrent device at home.

Fluffycloudland77 · 31/10/2020 10:40

Red light led mask every night.

FlyingByTheSeatof · 31/10/2020 12:12

@Craftycorvid yes the Prai neck cream works wonders. I've had some tubs knocking around for a while from M&S and recently decided to try it out and I'm quite shocked how well it works. It's plumped up and smoothed out especially an area of skin on my chest that got burned to a crisp years ago in the sun that was starting to look really crepey. It's in the current M&S beauty box if anyone wants to try it I think it's that or a serum which I've never tried

FlyingByTheSeatof · 31/10/2020 12:33

OP there's a skin care colab box with really useful items for you to try from Superdrug x Nadine Baggot. It's only £20 ish so good to start off with and take it from there. I love the Simply Pure hydrating serum which I use pretty much daily alongside other products

Bilingualspingual · 31/10/2020 12:36

Expensive but the Newa radio frequency machine has made a very positive difference for me, I think. I’m 50 and have been complimented several times on my skin recently. Also, giving up booze completely (I know, definitely not for everyone!)

AintPageantMaterial · 31/10/2020 14:53

It can. I don’t use prescription tretinoin, just retinol and vitamin C serum hyaluronic serum and sunscreen every day. Had a Visia skin analysis last week and was shown it alongside my Visia scan from August 2019 and my skin is better on every possible measure. Redness, pigmentation, wrinkles everything....it was very satisfying.
In August 2019 I was 49 and had been on HRT for 6 months. Have continued with that which I am sure has something to do with it too.

Yeti99 · 31/10/2020 16:05

3-4 liters of water every day without fail.

Serums. They'll drive the moisture down deeper into your skin. I use the Nip & Fab one.

Moisturize several times a day. Even if it means taking your make-up off in the middle of the day, washing your face and starting right over, do it.

I don't think anything else works.

kumquotorphysalis · 01/11/2020 09:39

I’m 40 soon and this routine has really helped me.

AM
Cerave hydrating cleaner with a flannel
Garnier Rosewater face spray from superdrug
Hadalabo hyaluronic acid from Amazon

Altruist SPF 50

PM
Cerave hydrating cleaner, double cleanse with a flannel
Garnier Rosewater face spray from superdrug
Hadalabo hyaluronic acid from Amazon

Nip fab retinol eye cream
No 7 advanced 1.5% retinol
Egyptian magic/white nivea if needed

I started consistently doing this at 36 and it’s definitely helped.

tearstainedbakes · 01/11/2020 10:51

But don’t listen to me, I am old and past believing in skin care regimens.... listen to the under-50s for messages of hope and optimism

I think I love you

redferrari · 01/11/2020 22:44

Op I am the same about my skin and a few years behind you so following this thread. @AintPageantMaterial the skin test sounds interesting where did you get it done? Also can you share the serum you are using for retinol and vit c pls? Thanks

MissMiss1 · 07/11/2020 13:10

Thank you for all your replies
I'm guessing there's not a definitive list of things that will help
I just begrudge spending good money on something that might not work
I'm trying the cerave eye repair cream, after a recommendation and it's quite thick, but I like that. I find my skin just drinks it up but by 10am it looks dehydrated again.
Do you think it's a case of giving up fighting the signs of ageing and just accepting it and keep our skin as plump and moisturised as possible?

Chillichutney1 · 07/11/2020 21:18

Try a thin layer of Vaseline at night. I use retinol, vitamin C etc for long term anti ageing but Vaseline is the only thing that gives me instant results.

It’s not for everyone but give it a try, usual nighttime routine whatever that is then Vaseline over the top.

DeeCeeCherry · 07/11/2020 21:40

I use Mandelic Acid at night, after I've cleansed my face. (Use every other night, at first). It's slower working than other face acids as it's far gentler on the skin. Pat it on with fingers, wait 30 minutes then use your night cream. Don't forget to use your night cream on neck and decolletage also.

Of all night creams I've tried I find Lacura Caviar (Aldi brand) to be the best. It's actually a dupe for a cream costing £200+ (I've forgotten the name but someone on here will know it).

I use 'Nivea UV Face 0% White Residue Anti-Age & Anti-Pigments Cream SPF50' daily, including in Winter.

If I'm staying indoors I still cleanse then use a day cream - L'Oreal Revitalift SPF30. Or Nivea Q10, I like them both.

Vaseline around my eyes at night.

A good Multivitamins & Minerals supplement, also Vitamin D3, daily. Drink water, try to never become dehydrated.

I have very dry skin by the way, but all the above hydrates my skin fine.

A friend uses a Jade Face Roller they're around £10 on Amazon, and she swears by it. Have a look at some reviews. I've not tried it but it's on my Christmas Wish List.

I don't think you have to spend loads on skincare to look good. Also think having a skincare routine, pampering your skin makes you feel good and in turn look good🙂

MissMiss1 · 07/11/2020 23:40

Thank you for your replies

I do have an alpha h acid, but don't use it religiously. I'll start tonight
Vaseline, now Ive never thought of trying that, doesn't it make your eyes puffy?

An SPF is a must the ? I think I'd prefer to use a separate one to my moisturiser, any suggestions?
