Mumsnet "ponytail" haircut - wet or dry?

Has anyone done this and which is best please?

I think I would just take a bit off to tidy up split ends in the first instance, just to be safe!

I'm sure I've done both at some time, but I was so a guide cut so I don't go too short

dudsville · 28/10/2020 13:04

I've done both. Wet can be marginally easier.

Alternista · 28/10/2020 13:13

Dry. My hair stretches too much when wet.

thesoundofthepolice · 28/10/2020 13:14

Dry! Wet hair stretches a lot you light end up with a shorter result if you're not careful!

ivftake1 · 28/10/2020 13:16

Neither! I would put the scissors down...

Pizzaistheanswer · 28/10/2020 13:18

Do it dry and a tiny amount at a time! You can always do it again in another couple of days, but you can't glue it back on once it's gone (I've been doing my hair like this for three or four years and the only time it goes wrong is when I get carried away).

Nyctophyllia · 28/10/2020 13:55

Dry, just a little bit at a time, I always cut my hair using this method and its fab

waltzingparrot · 28/10/2020 15:12

I do it wet and put a thin hair band at the level I want DH to cut under but I get him to hold scissors vertically and cut top to bottom (rather than left to right) then you may get a bit of layering but the hair is the same length all the way round.

lindyloo57 · 28/10/2020 17:09

I do it dry a little bit at a time.

JoeCalFuckingZaghe · 28/10/2020 17:11

Neither. Brad Mondo has taught me too much. Put the scissors down.

Creativebee · 28/10/2020 17:17

I did mine on Sunday (wet) it’s very slightly shorter than I would like it and that’s only because I curl my hair so the front layers are just slightly shorter than usual. I cut it wet 4 months ago (for the first time) and DH said it was my best haircut yet, apparently better than the salon cut 😂. Maybe just cut it slightly at first and see what you think, I prefer it wet because I can get it really straight with my naturally curly hair. Good luck

superstar63 · 28/10/2020 21:00

Hmm, it seems to be fairly equal votes on wet or dry.

I am going to watch a few videos and then have a go but will probably play it very, very safe as I can do it every few days if I have to, just to get it right.

I'm with PP on the Brad Mondo point - watch some of his videos and you won't want to cut your own hair!

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 28/10/2020 21:16

Those of you who do this, do you cut the ponytail off vertically as you hold it out (ie in line with the wall) or angled downwards between your fingers (in line with the floor or diagonal)?

I’ve watched a couple of how-to vids and the method seems to differ.

DailyCandy · 28/10/2020 21:28

Why in gods name does this kind of advice sit in a style and beauty thread?
Are we doing our own teeth extractions too?
Leave it to the professionals.

MrsWooster · 28/10/2020 22:45

Dry, and across the top of your head, above your fingers, with your fingers slightly curved in the same shape as your head (not that I think it makes a lot of difference!)

LightOfAThousandStars · 28/10/2020 23:07

I've done it both ways and prefer wet. Just be careful not to cut off too much, you can always go back and take more off.
