Why is all maternity stuff high-necked???

Poppyismyfavourite · 27/10/2020 11:15

Aaargh it's driving me mad! I'm now 5 months pregnant and a lot of my non-maternity stuff no longer fits.
I hate high-necked stuff, it makes me feel like I'm being strangled and makes me look dumpy. I also have a nice decolletage (I think that's what it's called?) so feel no need to hide it, and "the girls" have finally come into their own! All this high necked stuff makes me look round and dumpy, when I actually feel nice and curvy for the first time ever!

Have you tried JojoMamanBebe for maternity clothing? I found them completely the opposite to the problem you’re having- everything was too low cut for me!

Mishmased · 27/10/2020 11:23

The girls have finally come into their own 🤣🤣🤣 love that.

Have you tried H&M, M&S online, next, what styles are you looking for dressy, work or casual?
Congrats!

Poppyismyfavourite · 27/10/2020 11:27

I looked at JojoMamanBebe for a jumper but they are all high-necked...

Sorry should have said - normally I wear a lot of knee-length jersey dresses with leggings, boots and cardigans. I have nice leggings from h&m and I never do cardigans up anyway so they're still fine.

I really want a nice jumper (allergic to wool so synthetic), and maybe a couple of tops or dresses.

I have quite a high waist so empire line suits me - drop/low waisted just makes me look like a sack of potatoes.

ie.boohoo.com/maternity

Poppyismyfavourite · 27/10/2020 12:20

Ooh thanks, I've never ordered from boohoo before, is it decent quality? They have a couple of decent jumpers too.
that dress is quite nice but not in my size (14).

I agree, everything is high-necked or like a tent. I wear clothes that show off my figure normally and that are lower cut (i.e vests, or v necked t-shirts etc). I hate the maternity clothes I can find! It's like the message is now you are pregnant you need to dress completely conservative and modestly!

ChelseaCat · 27/10/2020 12:49

ASOS usually have very ‘on trend’ stuff in maternity styles

I ordered a few basic bits from Boohoo- honestly the quality is crap, worse than Primark. Looks lovely on first wear, but after a few washes the material had gone all bobbly.

It was fine for round the house but I certainly didn’t feel smart in it. It got binned rather than stored away for any future pregnancies like the stuff I’d got from Mothercare (RIP) or H&M. I wouldn’t have even insulted a charity shop by donating it!

Have you tried Gap online? They have a decent selection.

I know what you mean about everything being high necked- I put on a lot of weight around my face and it definitely did nothing to flatter my extra chins!

Poppyismyfavourite · 27/10/2020 13:11

@TerribleCustomerCervix ah ok, yeah that's what I was afraid of! Haha yep I agree about the chins! I have a bit of a double chin anyway so polo-neck types are always a no-no for me!

I've got some lovely stuff from JoJomamanbebe second hand - it's a bit pricy for me to buy new there haha, but the quality is lovely.

I've found some cheap nighties on boohoo though - I wanted one/two for in labour which could get trashed.

I do like Gap, will have a look there.

right just checked gap, and the only jumper not high-necked is £45 and unavailable in my size... this is what I'm talking about!

Have you looked at Seraphine? I have massive boobs even when not pregnant so high necks out and have bought quite a bit of their stuff through my pregnancies.

ShirleyPhallus · 27/10/2020 13:15

This drove me bananas. Yes, please make me look even bigger and more top heavy

I actually loved Topshop maternity, they have beautiful things that aren’t too high cut

wholelottaworry · 27/10/2020 13:18

These ones

www.seraphine.com/en-gb/marney-mock-wrap-top-1/

www.seraphine.com/en-gb/pandora-wrap-dress/

Jumpers on the site are more of a cover up job though you may find a good wrap dress.

I have many many questions about maternity clothes. Why do the jeans ALWAYS fall down, whether they are under or over the bump? Why are there so many frills and flounces? I'm not a 3 year old going to a tea party, I am a pregnant adult woman. Why are they all typically in very light pastel colours? Aside from being impractical, it totally washes me out. Why why why are there so many off the shoulder styles? How on earth is that compatible with the heavy duty maternity bras that are needed?? And why so many twee little phrases? I think the enormous bump is enough of a sign to the world that I am with child, I hardly think it's necessary to have coy little "baby on board" or "mama bear" messages printed on my clothes. And why are all nursing clothes also maternity? Unless you're breastfeeding and pregnant (which can't be that many women, surely? Maybe I'm wrong!) it's totally pointless.

I will say I was pregnant over last summer so appreciate styles/colours may have changed!

I think maternity clothes are designed by people who have never been pregnant and have never seen a pregnant woman.

Poppyismyfavourite · 27/10/2020 13:41

@FreeAcorns haha I'm with you on the frills! Also a lot of black and white polka dots??? I don't really wear much black normally, I like "Autumn" colours which seem to be hard to find.

I've come around to the maternity&nursing idea though - I'm buying quite a lot of new clothes now, and glad that some of them will still be useful when the baby comes - I don't want to buy another load of nursing clothes.

I was looking at missguided maternity clothes last night. It really made me laugh that most of the tops they sell had the brand name 'missguided' written across the front - everyone would think I was making some sort of statement about having another baby Grin. Although at least that's less twee than 'mama 2 be' type slogans on everything!

I also can't understand why maternity jumpsuits/playsuits are a thing?? Most impractical clothing ever for a time in your life where you will need to wee more frequently than ever before. Plus no easy access to your bump for scans/dopplers/fundal height measurements.

Mishmased · 27/10/2020 14:15

@Poppyismyfavourite never bought from boohoo so not sure about their quality but I know mamalicious quality is good as I'm on my third round of maternity jeans. Seraphine is also good quality.

Tryingtogetitright · 27/10/2020 14:59

I got some bits from Heavenly Bump when I was pregnant (7 years ago now though!) Reasonably priced and the quality was similar to Dorothy Perkins I think. Not sure if it's still as good now but might be worth a look?

TerribleCustomerCervix · 27/10/2020 15:00

I’ve only got a few things from Jojo but they were decent quality.

Honestly it might be worth your while investing in a few more expensive bits from Jojo/ Seraphine etc, create a capsule wardrobe that you’ll actually get use out of.

I put off buying decent stuff until I’d wasted money on crap quality clothes (see above re Boohoo) and ended up not getting the best cost-per-wear out of the pieces I did like!

You’ll be wearing maternity stuff for a few weeks afterwards, esp the tops if you’re breastfeeding, so there’s still value in getting stuff that works for you, even if it’s a bit more £££.

Also you can sell it again on FB marketplace once you’re done and get some cash back.

niki26 · 27/10/2020 15:14

My maternity dresses were all from Seraphine and they are almost inappropriately low cut - to the extent that I'm still wearing them for breast feeding and just pull them down at the front to get boob out!

BigBigPumpkin · 27/10/2020 15:15

It's a scam, OP, so you buy high necked for maternity and then have to buy a different set if you want to breastfeed.

LouisLitt · 27/10/2020 15:19

Boohoo is appalling in terms of quality and ethics. I found the best place for tops to be dorothy perkins, I’ve lived in their wrap tops.
