Jewellery for a 21 year old

mynameiscalypso · 27/10/2020 10:01

My cousin is turning 21 next month and my DM has delegated the job of finding her a piece of jewellery on the basis that I am slightly closer to being trendy than my 70 year old mother (which I'm totally taking as a compliment). Sadly, however, I have zero idea what 21 year olds are into these days. Can anyone recommend some good brands? Budget is up to about £150. Thank you!

Missoma?

mynameiscalypso · 27/10/2020 11:42

Funnily enough, I've just sent my mum a link to Missoma. Some lovely stuff so I'm glad to have the recommendation seconded!

My DD has asked for some rings from Pandora for her 22nd birthday. They don't only sell charm bracelets. I think she would've liked something from Tiffany but that's out of my price range!

HermioneWeasley · 27/10/2020 13:39

Anything from Tiffany’s sterling silver range within budget?

pinksummer · 27/10/2020 13:43

www.alexmonroe.com/bumblebee-necklace

Alex Monroe does some lovely bits in that price range

Jen435 · 27/10/2020 13:46

I would also second Missoma - check whether she wears more gold or silver as I used to always get given silver jewellery when I was younger and never wore it which was a waste.

Edge of Ember, Tada & Toy, Monica Vinader also worth a look

FlyingByTheSeatof · 27/10/2020 13:57

My plan is to buy something from Tiffany when my DD turns 21. She currently gets pandora. But I might just get her a 21st Pandora charm instead. I have a few years yet.
I think the excitement is also seeing the bag and the anticipation of the contents within.

FlyingByTheSeatof · 27/10/2020 13:59

Missoma would mean nothing and not hold any excitement at all for my DD

mynameiscalypso · 27/10/2020 14:57

Thank you all - I wasn't sure if Tiffany was still considered 'cool' these days but I'll have a look there too as well as the suggestions here. We think we may have got something from Pandora for her 18th - unfortunately we can't remember what otherwise we'd look there too! I've also looked through a small number of the millions of photos on Facebook to make sure we get her something she's likely to wear!

The last 21st birthday present I bought was from Claudia Bradby - the floating pearl earrings. Elegant but not boring, and a style you can wear with lots of things.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 27/10/2020 15:06

Tiffany is still super expensive - my DP bought his daughter a simple moon and stars chain necklace at the lower end of the range for her 18th and it was about £800. Meaningful and lovely for both of them but crazy expensive for the object itself.

Coffee4Queen · 27/10/2020 15:38

Second Alex Monroe. Some lovely stuff

throwaway100000 · 27/10/2020 15:38

I’m the same age as her; Pandora is not “cool” at all. Tiffany is prestigious (there’s a boutique within Selfridges after all!) but it depends on the items available within your budget.

My daily accessories consist of my Apple Watch (stainless steel gold with matching gold Milanese band, so looks more like a traditional watch); a personalised bar necklace and a ring (similar to the Cartier love ring but without the circles).

I think people my age tend to get luxury designer items for their 21st birthday as opposed to jewellery eg a luxury card holder or designer belt etc.

Nanniss · 27/10/2020 15:40

Another vote for Alex Monroe. My dd has a lovely initial necklace that she was given for her 21st.

RWK29 · 27/10/2020 15:51

@mynameiscalypso Have a look at Monica Vinader 😊 Missoma, Merci Maman, Astrid & Miyu are all great options too!
Or a watch? Maybe have a look at Olivia Burton 😊 my younger sister is just slightly older than your cousin and these would all be a huge hit with her 😊

SpaceOP · 27/10/2020 15:59

£150 is a difficult amount for buying jewellery of this sort. For less than £100 you can buy some really lovely, statement costume jewellery/semi precious stone type stuff. Or you need way more to buy something life-lasting.

Having said that, if you know what she likes, there are loads of lovely places like the ones mentioned above where it will be about a piece of jewellery she'd like rather than the brand. Stacking rings are popular and might be nice? Although just looked on Monica Vinander and first stacking ring that came up I loved but it was £195!

Hiccupiscal · 27/10/2020 16:00

@throwaway100000 is Missoma "cool" then?
Ive just looked up on the website, and all the jewellery looks aimed at older people (I mean in 30s+)

I am incredibly of touch with all of it though, so what do I know?

throwaway100000 · 27/10/2020 17:29

@Hiccupiscal I wasn’t trying to offend you, so sorry if I did. I only mentioned “cool” in response to OP’s post at 14:57. I haven’t heard of Missoma. Their items seem nice.

mynameiscalypso · 27/10/2020 18:03

I agree @SpaceOP, it is a difficult amount. Interesting the point about presents mainly be luxury items rather than jewellery too. I know I got mainly jewellery for mine but that was 15 years ago so times have most definitely changed!

Thanks all for the great suggestions. I think I'd rather spend the same amount on a nice/interesting piece from a less well known brand than something smaller from a recognisable place. Hopefully she'll share those sentiments!

Me judo has some nice jewellery. Not sure if it’s ‘cool’ since I’m in my mid 30s 😂

I like Monica Vinader but it annoys me that none of its solid gold. Is vermeil up to daily wear?

Zeldaaa · 27/10/2020 18:44

Damn auto correct. Should have read mejuri not me judo Grin

Hiccupiscal · 27/10/2020 19:48

@throwaway100000 oh no, my message to you must have read wrongly, i just meant in your opinion, being 21, is the jewellery missoma selling, the mind of jewellery that a 21 year old would like?

In my personal opinion it looked like the kind of jewellery worn by and older demographic, 30+ perhaps, not quite trendy enough to be worn by women in thier 20s..

It was a genuine question from the perspective of a 21 year old, who sounds like she has lovely taste :)

Apologies if the message read badly. It was a genuine question of you opinion of the jewellery

Hiccupiscal · 27/10/2020 19:48

*kind not mind

FlyingByTheSeatof · 27/10/2020 23:08

@throwaway100000 that's very handy to know for future reference thanks

earsup · 28/10/2020 00:35

Pandora is that..over priced and some only plated...it will be out of date very quickly and worthless !
