How funny as I was actually really disappointed by them given the era!!

greyinganddecaying · 22/10/2020 21:57

I didn't think they were in keeping with the era at all! But really liked them all the same Smile

Watched it yesterday & was inspired to pull out my navy slouchy wide leg trousers & a navy silk vintage blouse to wear today. Am planning on searching for neat fitting fair isle knits this weekend as I love that look. Overall the costumes weren’t as dramatic as are often portrayed for the era but quite possibly more realistic.

I watched it last night and loved her liberty print blouse and navy wide legged trousers outfit. Have spent the morning looking for a ditsy print silk ruffled shirt but to no avail!

Can't say I love the outfits per se but they are in keeping with her character

I thought Max’s mustard-coloured suit in Monte Carlo was rather loud for a staid, impeccable upper-class Englishman in 1935. But it wasn’t exactly a subtle film!

Housewife2010 · 25/10/2020 05:00

Max definitely didn't have the body of a 30's upper class gentlemen. He was far too buff.

BitOfFun · 25/10/2020 05:15

Wasn't her suit gorgeous? And the beret!

maadlady · 25/10/2020 06:20

Ive had to order a beret. Thank god for ebay Grin

Absolutely. Maxim de Winter would definitely not have worked out! That kind of upper-body muscle would have been associated with professional athletes, strongmen, and farm labourers (with whom Rebecca had dalliances...)

I’m laughing slightly at how the costume designers are making only the most token efforts to make Lily James look dowdy. The second Mrs de Winter in the novel lives in flannel skirts and home-made jumpers in Monte Carlo, and arrives at Manderley in a raincoat far too big for her, a very small fur and a ‘tan-coloured stockinette dress’, rather than Lily James’ beautiful grey coat and pale blue beret. (And in the novel Max is the one who suggests her clothes look wrong, the git.)

BitOfFun · 25/10/2020 07:24

Talking of clothes, what about the dish rag that Maxim's sister insists "will do" for a formal ball? She was wearing prettier outfits before her marriage!

agapanthus1979 · 25/10/2020 07:43

@EdinaMonsoon if you find any such fair isle knits, please share!
I love that whole '30s look. Currently binge-reading all my Nancy Mitfords and I love the details about clothes.
