Any excellent products?
My Mum was an Avon lady and I am happy to support this local Avon lady but would appreciate recommendations esp re skin care stuff that works or make up. Bearing in mind I have sensitive skin.
Or any suitable products. Wink
Just love the Avon catalogue- it used to be a quarter of the size in the 80s.

My mum was an Avon lady, too! Apparently they have become more like an MLM now which is a shame and puts me off.

That said, I remember the bubble baths used to smell great, if that's your thing!

Eaumyword · 23/10/2020 13:09

A colleague at work does it. I'm happy to buy from her a couple of times a year as there's zero pressure. She's not into recruiting people in a team, the products are nice and reasonable and I enjoy browsing the brochure.
On the other hand, a FB friend has found religion with Tropic and I'm busily avoiding her requests to 'join her team', attend online product parties and buy from her (omg it's Clarins prices!) It's incredibly awkward!Confused

theonlywayisup33 · 23/10/2020 14:13

decoraters It doesn't look overpriced. It looks really reasonable.
What is difficult about stopping? I only will order what I want.

For about the 3rd time, I am not considering being an Avon lady myself. I just want to buy their products which look great.

I saw they are still selling Soft Musk. I loved that perfume when my Mum was an Avon rep so might just get some.

A lady in our village does Avon. There's no pressure to be a seller. To me seems nothing like the high pressure MLM. Much of it is very good value. In the last 6 months I have bought and loved. Handsoap in little bottles often on sale for £1. The lily of the valley one is lovely. Shower gel blue one and Hawaiian coconutty one lovely and good value for a huge bottle. Body Lotion in huge pots for a couple of pounds (as good as the Body Shop). I have a few of the shampoo and conditioner all in one - bought as handy for gym pre-lock down. Smells lovely - apricot scent using it in the family bathroom. My Mum buys lipstick from them and says it is good. Bought handcream recently on offer - works well - there's lots of offers and I find it good quality - inoffensive scents. Mum also buys the lavender pillows spray. I have never been tried to be recruited - just good quality, reasonable priced goods.

The face masks and bubble bath are horrible. I like the mousse foundation and I also got a great kohl eyeliner a while back.

Mrsjayy · 23/10/2020 14:24

Oh i remember the tinkerbelle range as a kid peel off nail polish and powder puff Smile as a grown up I used to buy the shampoo from my neighbour who did Avon.

crochetmonkey74 · 23/10/2020 14:49

I love the bubble bath!

decoraters · 23/10/2020 15:34

I suppose this but is personal choice, I couldn't justify a lot of their prices when I can get as good or better at Tesco for a similar price or less.

What is difficult about stopping? I only will order what I want.

That's great, but a lot of the Avon sales are based on people feeling obliged to keep ordering every time a book arrives. You and I can say 'no thanks' but you only have to read a few threads on Mumsnet to see how many people would not be able to.

theonlywayisup33 · 23/10/2020 16:19

MrsJayy I totally remember the Tinkerbell range now you mention it!

The fragrance diffusers are excellent. I have the linen one at my front door to mask the dog smell and it's strong but not overwhelming.

Nail polish is great too, I think it's called super strong. Stayed on my toes for ages! I love a look through the catalogue

Noidea2114 · 23/10/2020 16:30

My DD is a Avon lady, has no interest in recruiting anyone else. No pressure to purchase.
She has been doing this for about 10 years now. Has a nice set of customers some only order once a year
others a few more, only one orders every month.(not me)

IsAWookieABear · 23/10/2020 16:47

My friend at work did it last year. I love the lily of the valley bubble bath (i use it as handwash). The glimmer sticks are great, and I really loved the mark primer.
The handcreams and smelly sprays were a fun to try but wouldn't get again.
Hair serums were pretty good.
Nail varnishes were nice but not very long-lasting.
Didn't like the so soft oil sprays much.
The so soft tan spray was appalling, really strong nail varnish remover-y smell. Made my eyes water so threw it away.
None of it is really worth the full price, but the half price bits are worth it iyswim.

picklecustard · 23/10/2020 17:02

I usually avoid MLMs but I do like the occasional few bits from Avon, unlike other mlm they’re pretty cheap and i like some of the products. The hair product sets are good where you get a serum, a hair protector spray and something else in a little set. I also like the nail varnishes and eye makeup stuff.

Housewife2010 · 23/10/2020 17:36

The new Lisa Armstrong makeup range at Avon got an excellent review on the Outspoken Beauty podcast.

theonlywayisup33 · 23/10/2020 18:42

So many good suggestions here - you can see why I am excited. Smile

Is there anything that is ok for sensitive skin?

There is something satisfying about looking through the book repeatedly and ordering based on how it's shown in the catalogue, but it's never the same in real life!

hollyhope · 23/10/2020 21:15

I love their volume mascara: it's a Beauty Bible award winner.

LeimarHELL · 23/10/2020 21:26

I have a local Avon lady and she has been doing it for a decade or so, and I always stock up on Ayurveda oil which smells divine and is useful for hair, skin and nail conditioning. I also love their advanced hydration overnight mask.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 23/10/2020 21:44

Its an MLM, the days of catalouge sales are well and truly over, the company is only viable (to the owners, not the reps they recruit) because they went full MLM.

You can go on to boots or superdrugs websites and have a good splurge without paying layers of commision or having an awkward relationship with someone hoping to make money off you.

PaxMalmKallax · 24/10/2020 10:11

I really like their gel nail varnishes with the curing top coat. They last at least a week and don’t trash your nails. I have nearly every colour! Often on a 3 for £10 offer so very cheap.

I disagree about the MLM thing, it’s easy to mute groups and unfollow from social media. Avon is one of the lowest pressure ones - I only order occasionally and say no thank you the rest of the time.

phantomish · 24/10/2020 10:25

MLMs have pyramid scheme business structures, only loosely made "legal" as they are selling a product. The products are vastly overpriced as each of the down line has to make a profit from the product. So something that cost pennies to make is selling at same level of say Clarins.
The money that those reps claim to make comes not so much from selling of the products but from recruiting members to join your down line.
I've seen friends joining these organisations which at times are often cult like and brainwashing. They pray on target markets such as the vulnerable, the mums that want to stay at home with their babies instead of doing a stable 9-5 job. It encourages lying- a " fake it til you make it" culture on social media. It's all lies lies lies. Just to recruit. In a lot of cases there is pressure for folk to make minimum monthly targets or they don't get bonuses or get demoted. The pressure has been known to result in the salesperson buying products themselves in order to stay afloat.
It turns each sales person into a parasite that is looking to turn every opportunity into a sale. They alien friends and colleagues on social media and in real life by treating them differently. Looking at them now as a potential sale.
I've had so many private messages over the years from folk. "Hi there, I know you haven't heard from me in years. I'm sorry you lost your dad. Would you like to buy some of my snake oil to make you feel better?"
I've heard and read of some mlm salespersons making ridiculous claims such as my potion will cure your infertility or my lotion will protect you against coronavirus.
The health ones are definitely the worst. When you look in depth at some of the research papers they cite to back up their miracle cures, you can see that the studies have been funded from the actual companies that make, supply and sell the items, that the studies are very biased, based on insignificant sample sizes and are not peered reviewed.
I find MLMs abhorrent. Admittedly Avon less so, however at company that decided to go down the MLM business model so rightly be tarred with the same brush.
