Soft and comfy school uniform for little boy with sensory issues?

millionaireshortie · 19/10/2020 20:06

I hope someone can help me.

Is it possible to find comfy, soft, grey shorts and trousers for a 5 yr old boy? Also soft polo shirts? He is incredibly sensitive and is refusing all his school uniform now. To be fair, he actually came home with a rash under his arms and round his groin area today and marks round his waistband. I think the rash is a heat rash as the classroom gets quite hot. The weave of the polo shirts IS quite rough. I kind of get where he's coming from.

Can anyone help? I really feel for him. FYI he has never worn jeans or even joggers. The only trousers he has ever worn are the Zara boys jersey leggings. He really can't stand anything else - any teachers or mums out there have any suggestions for me?

M&S used to do a range aimed at children with sensory needs, might be worth a try

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 19/10/2020 20:09

Do you think he would wear jogger shorts or joggers? They are nice and soft. My ds has m&s polo shirts. They seem quite soft. The softest ones I've found are ones my eldest had last year from the schoolwear shop, but no guarantee they would be the same in one near you.

Try everything for eczema or eco outfitters for cotton uniform

I looked at that range but the reviews weren't great. Thanks though, will take another look just to be sure.

Have a look at Gap. They have cotton options that are softer and nicer IME

Endlesscoathunt · 19/10/2020 20:16

Chinos like these are great for my DC with sensory issues (only ever wore joggers beforehand)

I also found the slightly more expensive 100% cotton supermarket polo shirts a lot softer than the other mix fabric ones I tried. They seem to vary a lot!

DinoMamasaurus · 19/10/2020 20:18

No advice on brands but usually washing washing and more washing helps to soften up and make them feel a bit more comfy.

I did see that M&S has an easy dressing range which seems to have been developed with a range of needs in mind including sensory. Not had anything from it to be able to say if it’s any good or not though.

My 4 yo school bottoms (which we’ve been happy with) are from Sainsburys and the tops from the school suppliers. I did take up some trousers to make elasticated waist shorts for him as I was finding it hard to find pull on and off school shorts.

Ohalrightthen · 19/10/2020 20:21

If i were you i would put him in clothing he can comfortably wear, and then speak to the school. When i was growing up there were tonnes of kids who didn't wear uniform and we didn't bat an eye. Some of them had financial reasons, some had phsyical ones.

Gurufloof · 19/10/2020 20:40

Like a pp can you wash what you have a lot of times? I have to do this for me with new clothes. Most stuff itches for a lot of wears before I can be comfortable in them. So I took to washing and drying them quite a few times. Also i remove labels properly by cutting the stitching.

MoltonSilver · 19/10/2020 20:47

If the seams on the polo shirt are an issue, wearing it inside out might help.

Yes, I'll order a couple of the gap 100% cotton long sleeve t-shirts to try which solves the problem that he will refuse to wear the school sweatshirt for the entire winter. At least his arms will be covered :)

These look great but I really don't think he'd manage the button just yet. Are they really that comfy? I can't imagine chinos are?

How strict are school about uniform? A soft vest under his polo shirt might help, and double triple fabric softener.
My son has major trouser issues. He's 14 now and only wears Next's jeans style school trousers, again softened to the max. They may still be too rough for your little boy though.
If he's refusing his uniform, what has he been going in and are school willing to work with you?

GingerFoxInAT0phat · 19/10/2020 21:20

Can he wear a long sleeved cotton shirt? They feel much better on the skin. And maybe a pair of tights under his trousers?

BaseDrops · 19/10/2020 21:21

There’s are in the girl’s range but can confirm very soft but do remove labels.

What does he wear on the bottom when not in school?

Aughrim18 · 19/10/2020 21:22

www.sensorysmart.co.uk
This is for adults and children with different sensory issues -

Endlesscoathunt · 19/10/2020 21:26

They are comfy but yes the button might be an issue... I think there’s somewhere that does school trousers with jogger waists...

BaseDrops · 19/10/2020 21:27

100% cotton is never as soft as modal or tencel. If he’ll wear leggings he might hate the feel of loose trousers moving around. Skinny school trousers an option?

Endlesscoathunt · 19/10/2020 21:27

Ps my Dc also refuses to wear a jumper and wears those long sleeve T shirts!

millionaireshortie · 19/10/2020 21:36

I've just found some long boys school socks on M&S so will order those and pair with the one pair of asda pull up elastic waist shorts he will wear (getting small now though and they've sold out of all sizes, nothing on eBay, arghh!) He likes the idea of long socks. Trousers will be too tricky I think. I've looked all over the internet this evening. He doesn't like the loose bit below the knee and skinny fit ones won't fit his thighs/bum.

@Endlesscoathunt - the long polo shirts are a revelation - I haven't come across those before! Ordering now.

Long socks and shorts will be cute, and if he gets used to the feel of long socks, you may be able to progress to trousers with his socks pulled up underneath as an extra layer.

kowari · 20/10/2020 08:23

My teen is fussy about fabrics and likes the uniqlo short sleeve heattech tshirts under his uniform. Could help with the polo through winter at least?

Marsis · 20/10/2020 08:45

Could you try girls jersey trousers most of them are quite plain straight leg trouser tuclothing.sainsburys.co.uk/p/Grey-Jersey-Trousers-2-Pack-%283-12-years%29/128960027-Grey?searchTerm=:newArrivals&searchProduct= something like this?
