EMLA numbing cream for epilation?

I've never heard of this before, but I came across something tonight and this numbing cream (which can be purchased over the counter from pharmacies) seems to be used by a lot of people for tattoos / microblading / injections / epilation pain.

I'm not too bad at epilating my legs but I can't tolerate doing my underarms or bikini line - apparently EMLA is often used to delay premature ejaculation and is safe to apply on all non-mucosal body parts so it seems OK for bikini lines.

It only comes in small tubes but I don't think I'd need a huge amount (I hope).

Does anyone here use EMLA for waxing or epliation?

No but that's a really good idea! I used it for blood thinning injections- it works best if you leave it on for over an hour so it might get a bit messy, you do need to put quite a thick layer on, if I remember correctly. I think I'm going to steal your idea and try it out, thank you!

It’s not that good for hair removal because the pain is happening under the skin. It’s a topical anaesthetic, but yes it works for tattooing.

You can get a spray (name escapes me) from the chemist which is similar and better for larger areas. It’s a dental spray.

Something Caine. It will come to me. My brain is not working today.

Is it Lidocaine?

Thanks all.

I don't think I'd need a completely numbing cream as I'm not too bad with leg epilating pain, but something which takes the edge off, even if it doesn't numb completely, would be great!

I think EMLA has lidocaine in it, but I'll definitely look out for this spray too!

@DobbyTheHouseElk is it xylocaine perhaps?

Bactine spray?

DobbyTheHouseElk · 15/10/2020 17:12

Thank you everyone trying to jog my memory. Yes, I was thinking of xylocaine.

I’m a beauty therapist and people do use it pre-electrolysis.

Thanks @DobbyTheHouseElk, I'll see if I can find some and give it a try.

It does form a bit of a “skin” if you overspray. Not a problem though. Hope it helps.

homemadecommunistrussia · 15/10/2020 20:56

I think it might stop the epilator working properly as the hairs will be slippery.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 15/10/2020 20:59

The spray won’t. It’s a dry spray.

With EMLA cream you need to cover it for about 20 mins or so with either the plaster they supply or we used cling film when we ran out. My yd used to use it for her weekly JIA injections. You might find using her germolene or a lidocaine based cream, something with anaesthetic in it, would help you more.
