Not shopping anymore

I've been reading some interesting articles about how some people haven't bought any major clothing items (aside from socks, knickers, etc).

I am trying to institute this very difficult task for the next 2 years minimum.

Anyone else have tried/done this? Any tips? Was it difficult or easy? Why did you do it? Any comments welcome.

ooh saurus I like your idea- I keep a log of what I wear every day so I can chart my wardrobe and what I never touch etc- I have too many bags and purses- they are my addiction- this is definitely an area I could downsize

julietmanchester · 13/10/2020 15:23

@Saurus72

The goal isn't due to money issues, it's just sad when I look in my closet and see many gorgeous items I have never worn. Some are designer, and I believe im being wasteful, and don't need or want clothing or shoes anymore. At least not a for a while.

Perhaps I will have more time and money for traveling or taking up a cooking class (obv when the pandemic is over). But starting to save now! So I can do whatever I want with my free time, which is usually shopping and that feels pathetic to me right now taking up two closets and halfConfused

I've started using thrift plus. It's an online clothes agency/charity shop. One third of the proceeds divided between thrift/charity of your choice/you. They also have a designer section. So I've been sorting through my wardrobes slowly. I'm also going to try for a year of no clothing purchases. This sounds really stupid but I've also tried not doing clothing laundry for a month and so end up wearing clothes I don't normally wear! That works.

@Lineofconcepcion

That is a smart idea! If I don't do laundry, then I will be forced to wear what is clean. Not stupid, but thank you for that tip! Smile

Juliet maybe you could log all your clothes as you wear them? or look through for duplicates and sell some?

Saurus72 · 13/10/2020 15:39

Honestly @crochetmonkey74 it’s pretty shocking when you start. I’ve ebayed a ton of things that I just don’t miss because I never wore them. It meant it was easy to get rid of things because I had either never worn them because there was an issue (annoying gaping on a top for example), or my life changed so I didn’t need it or in a few cases, I bought things and literally never wore them. Not good at all - that’s what I want to avoid in the future.

I think also sticking to a few shops that I know work for me also helps. Toast, Whistles, Jigsaw and Uniqlo for work, Cos and &Other Stories occasionally when I can try on in-store.

I'm trying to buy less, this year has helped not being able to go into city as much, i used to go in city once a week and mostly came home with something new, so far this year i haven't been to city since lock down in March, i too have lots of clothes and could go two or three years without buying anything but I know I won't manage that, I have bought a few things on line in the sales, I even dabbled on ebay and brought three summer dresses from warehouse brand which I love. So from now on I will definitely try to buy much less.

Zinnia · 13/10/2020 17:38

I've kept a list of purchases since 2014. Never had the courage to tot them all up though! It does help me keep things in check, up to a point. I use Stylebook as well to make sure I actually wear everything I buy. Also buy and sell through eBay a lot but am a sucker for a sale, a habit I'm trying to break!

grassisjeweled · 13/10/2020 17:52

I am trying to do this, it's tough though as I love shopping!

I am not wearing any of my nice clothes as I'm stuck WFH. Trying to wear nice shirts etc with jeans, but can't really swan around the house in a pencil skirt -

shinynewapple2020 · 13/10/2020 18:01

@julietmanchester

I use up all my skincare no matter what so I do splurge on those, because it is always used up.

It's things like dresses, tailored jackets, etc I never wear. I have plenty of them and want to stop being wasteful.

It's become a very strange habit to have a closet full of clothes that are not worn, but needs to be used. Smile

One thing that helped me in the past was learning about buying clothes for the life you lead, not the life you wished you led. I used to buy lots of nice going out clothes whereas my life mainly involved wearing jeans to the local pub .

The same for buying nice work suits whereas in reality most days I wore smart casual .
I would suggest that you go through all the clothes you have unworn in your wardrobe , keep one or two for each occasion and sell the rest .

New purchases to fit with your existing lifestyle and to mix and match with other things in your wardrobe .

Oh my gosh. Why have I never thought of 'no laundry' to make you evaluate your clothes! I get really stressed when I find out certain clothes are in the wash and hate picking the alternatives, so I go put a wash on... I'm going to try this fantastic tip so I can get rid of clothes I don't love, and prehaps fall in love with some items I wouldnt pick out!
