Home hair dye disaster - advice please!

Hi all - I had a go at home hair dye for the first time and was quite pleased until DH told me I had missed a massive patch at the back BlushConfusedSad

Clearly I can’t live like this for six weeks so what to do? 1) Dye whole head again - will hair be destroyed? Or 2) Try to (get DH to?) dye just missed patch and hope colour comes out exactly the same?

Please help as I am very sad! Sad

Just buy the same one and redye the back. It will make it less noticeable

poppinpink · 12/10/2020 20:44

Just do the patch you missed, I'm sure it will be ok.

Lighter or darker? Either way, just do the missed patch or you will over lift the rest of the hair and it will still be patchy

Frappuccinofan · 12/10/2020 20:49

Is it dye or bleach?

I would just touch up the missed patch, no point dying it all again.

I’d dye missed patch but 10 mins before end of development time I’d comb any leftover dye evenly through all hair

The problem with doing this is that box dyes use a high volume developer (as in bleach) that lifts and lightens your base colour before depositing the desired colour on top. The company does this so they can have a uniform end result across a spectrum of different base colours from dark to light.

Therefore applying colour just for the sake of it to the rest of the hair will mean that you unnecessarily damage it, as the high volume developer will lift the hair again, even if you just leave it on for 10 minutes.

It’s not the same as applying a toner or a colour-deposit-only dye.

I wouldn't advise dying your whole head again!

Buy a box of Clairol Root Touch Up dye - pick the shade that most closely matches the colour code of the one you used for your head of hair (6, 5G, 7A etc.) The pack provides a small amount of product but should be enough for a missed patch.

Yes - get your DH involved.
