and does anyone on here actually use paraben free cosmetics (apart from lily lolo) I would love to know if there is anything out there that actually works.

Hi I saw it and was shocked. I remember reading an article about sarah beeny 3-4 yrs back when she had been tested for parabens etc and was very high. It obviously shocked her so much........... Yes where are these available? And who uses them? Toothpaste without (what was the name) tryptophans?

Mojomummy · 12/10/2007 15:20

Yes I saw it - not surprising when you read the ingredient lists on the back of the products.

There used to be a list of 'toxic' products on the greenpeace website.

The ingredient in toothpaste is triclosan, it's anti bacterial. The toothpaste I saw (apart from the aubergine/salt one) was GreenPeople, which I buy for my girls.

Since I baecame pregnant in Sept 2003, I stopped using most cosmetics except mascara & the occasional puff of clinque brush on sun or Aveda blush - which I thought was ok. Having watched this programme, this isn't entirely true !

Examples of other poducts are with high levels of 'nasties' are Clairols Essence & Dove - Simple was covered on the programme.

i was shocked too..i had no idea..i look at the labels on products but dont take it in..
i use burts bees on my kids which is usually 98% or above natural..can be a bit pricey though..after looking today i found a website
www.ethicalsuperstore.com it seems to cover a few of the products which were on last night.
I'm wondering how i will get my 3 and 5 yr olds into fennel toothpaste

Thanks full..will check out the kingfisher one, think that sounds a bit more palatable.
we need to have 1500 mls of flouride in our toothpaste here in the north west.
My 3 yr ds has just developed a urine infection, i was suprised to say the least. Looking into it further i found out it could be triggered by bubble bath, washing powder etc..manmade chemicals stripping the bodys natural defence
so a total consumer rethink is in order.
Thanks for the book rec..couldnt have come at a better time.

Northern Souls, I always wash our knickers in ecover non bio + the conditioner. (sometimes reverting to the bio ;- ) although lately I've found a good stain remover for 'baby' stains, so when I use that I do a prewash, just to make sure it's all out.

Beaming Baby do a nice bubble bath & sometimes we have the horns & halos.

crapcook · 13/10/2007 20:23

Was this How Toxic Are You? Did you see the mums being interviewed? Well they are my Powerpramming mates they are

fullmoonfiend · 13/10/2007 20:27

oh I love that song BTW...

Now you're not going to say or do anything to besmirch the good name of Fullmooners round here, are you??

PanicPants · 13/10/2007 20:44

I watched this and was also shocked. Do you think there will be a book/leaflet to go with the series as I can't remember any of the suggestions made, other than ecover washing powder.

We use halo and horns for ds, is that fairly ok?

northernsoul · 15/10/2007 18:50

I've just swapped to Ecover so hopefully no more toxic underpants
Panicpants if you go to the programme page on Channel 4's site there are a whole bunch of info and links page..makes for some interesting reading.
I didnt know about the halos and horns range so thanks for that. I'll try and track some down..much cheaper than Burts Bees too!

cloudberry · 15/10/2007 20:36

yummymummywannabe · 16/10/2007 23:29

wow, this is great, am new to the site but am so glad I logged on.

I've asked loads of friends if they watched sarah beeney and no one had so thought I was being a bit alarmist!!Will look up safer products tomorrow, was most appalled when I looked at the ingredients on my DS's "sensitive" baby wipes. Don't want to clog he`s precious body up with toxins

thank you all x

expatinscotland · 16/10/2007 23:41

but look at sarah! i mean, ffs, she's got highlights in her hair, loads of slap on her face, etc.

i thought it was a bit of a crock.

i've tried alternative cosmetics and they're too expensive and don't work as well, IMO.

that would be the exception, but most of the other stuff i tried wasn't cheaper or as effective.

i don't use commercial cleaning products and as dd1 has sensitive skin, we never used wipes on her - water - and now they use SLS free shampoo and body wash.

i like clean clothes, so use non-bio washing powder.

I saw it and it was interesting. since I had ds 6 years ago, he had sensitive skin and came up like a baboon with anything johnsons, who I believed to be 'the best'. We were on cotton wool and water for the first 12 months. Then round about the same time Dh came out in a rash from using normal shower gel. I now buy most toiltries from the health shop and love them. we use Jason products, I would never go back to 'normal' ones.

Those girls were very extreme with their use of everything. Who actually eats toothpaste like they did?

if you do go down the toothpaste route - make sure it has flouride. the one I used didn't and the dentist spotted it straight away and said it had made my teeth soft. it could be rectified by using flouride again.
