Castor oil for eyelash growth (pic included)

Exactly 3 months ago I started applying castor oil to my eyelashes twice a day to see if it would help them grow, and I think it's worked - I don't have luscious lashes but they are visibly longer (see pic). I started the experiment after a friend started using Revitalash and saw some results after 3 months ... I wasn't going to fork out for Revitalash but I already had the castor oil knocking about. I don't think I noticed any difference until the 3 month mark but I'm going to carry on and see if things improve further.

I made the pic B&W because I thought the close up eye pic was a bit creepy!

Yes I’d say they are longer in the second pic. Well done. I’m trying it on my eyebrows, let’s see how it goes!

Mrsbclinton · 11/10/2020 21:55

Is there any particular brand or type you use. Do you have an applicator like a mascara wand or how do you apply it?

RedIsWhereItsAt · 11/10/2020 21:55

What do you do? Put some on cotton wool and wipe the base of the eyelashes?

fandemic · 11/10/2020 23:45

This is the castor oil I've been using - not really a fancy sort at all (I've read that Jamaican castor oil is the best but that's not what I've used). I just apply with my finger and ensure I massage it into the roots. Some info I've encountered says that it's v important not to get it in your eyes - I'm not particularly fussy about that as I haven't found that it stings or causes irritation, but perhaps that would be an issue for some.

Just looks like you've curled your eyelashes for the second pic.

That's a fairly big tank of castor oil to have knocking about. What do you use it for?
Janegrey333 · 12/10/2020 00:25

And used more mascara.

Janegrey333 · 12/10/2020 00:26

In the second pic.

Peakypolly · 12/10/2020 00:30

I've been trying castor oil on my eyebrows for 8 months and don't feel they have thickened up at all.

blisstwins · 12/10/2020 03:28

You have beautiful eyes in both pictures. The lashes closest to your nose look longer in the second photo.

Monty27 · 12/10/2020 03:38

OP doesn't it get in your eyes?
Love the pics 💗

fandemic · 12/10/2020 11:22

I haven't curled my eyelashes or used mascara in the pics (flattered that anyone would think that - but I think the b&w makes the lashes look more noticeable because they are dark brown rather than black irl)

I originally bought the bottle of castor oil when I started doing oil cleansing - I read that you need to use castor oil mixed with some other sort of oil. I didn't get on with it as a cleanser (it dried out my skin, weirdly) so I just cleanse using apricot kernel oil now. I have used the castor oil as a deep conditioner a few times. But apart from that it's just been sitting in a cupboard.

I've also been applying it to my eyebrows but haven't noticed a difference there - but then I've always had rubbish eyebrows. I haven't noticed a change on the lower lashes either ... maybe just because they grow more slowly and/or are supposed to be shorter anyway?

You have lovely eyes OP but I'm not sure there's an awful lot of difference, it's very subtle. Looks more like there's more of a curl to the lashes in pic 2. Not suggesting a curler was used, mine look different on different days in that respect quite often. How I've slept on them etc.

I think if you have to look for it in a close up photo it is indeed pretty subtle!

Interesting you say castor oil dried your skin out as on oil cleanse though. I always swerve it as I read once that it's the go to oil to add in for those wanting to oil cleanse but who have oilier skin to start with. Mines dry and needs all the help it can get.

MolotovMocktail · 12/10/2020 14:50

It has helped a little bit perhaps. In comparison my eyelashes were about double the length after 3 months of revitalash. You can get cheaper lash growth serums too.

August1980 · 12/10/2020 18:23

OP, thanks for sharing. I am going to give it a go. I am adventurous like thatSmile.

Ps: you have such lovely eyes!

Spinningdot · 12/10/2020 19:21

I genuinely don't see any difference in length. In the 2nd pic they're 'sitting up' more. For me, that's affected by how rested & therefore how puffy my eyes are. You do have lovely eyes though!
Can eyelashes actually grow longer? I thought they were a finite length & fall out once fully grown & growth cycle is complete.
Btw had you heard of castor oil being used for eyelashes?
I use coconut oil to cleanse & moisturise with & if it gets in my eyes, it's really irritating

BlackSwan · 12/10/2020 19:49

Buy the Revitalash. Or better, Latisse.

fandemic · 12/10/2020 22:06

Thank you for the nice compliments ❤️ Maybe I am imagining things, I can see the point some of you are making about the angle of the lashes! I had read stories about castor oil being used for eyelash growth but apparently it's not proven (the only thing that is, is Latisse). In my case, I do actually have long lashes, it's just that the very ends of them are transparent so they can't be seen, unless I'm wearing mascara. My theory was that the ends must have been darker at some point, so maybe the castor oil would provide enough conditioning to make them thicker and darker. And since I had castor oil already I had nothing to lose. A little lockdown project!

It has occurred to me that it is very unfair that my nose hairs (which I pull out) are long, dark, and glossy - would happily get them transplanted to my eyes Hmm

Hmm maybe a little...ive been using rapidlash for about 2 and a half years and it has grown my lashes really long, in fact at a recent eye test the optician thought I had lash extensions 🙃 they even commented that if I did have to wear glasses they would annoy me as my lashes would brush against them lol, anyway try rapidlash, you won't be disappointed. Just a side note if you stop using the product your lashes do get gradually stumpier as in they don't grow so long after shedding.

pockledigg · 13/10/2020 06:22

I've been massaging a tiny drop of castor oil into my lashes for the last year or so and it definitely makes them longer. It's subtle initially and probably takes a good 6 - 9 months to see the full effect, but it's cheap and easy - op is right!

fandemic · 13/10/2020 10:22

Ok I'm going to keep going with it! I'm not going to buy any lash serum (I don't care about it enough to do that) but since I have a ton of castor oil I will continue. I forgot to mention above - although there isn't any evidence that castor oil helps eyelash growth particularly, there is evidence that it helps regrow hair on the head after hair loss. I will report back on this thread in a few months in case it's helpful to anyone - when I was researching this I found it frustrating that I couldn't find before/after pics spread over several months. Also, here's the comparison of the other eye, in case that helps clarify any of the 'hmm I'm not sure' thoughts. Personally I can see an improvement, although only a very slight one ... but I'm also aware that I am probably influenced by wishful thinking!
