Silicone free shampoos and conditioners that you can buy in supermarkets?

I want to try these but wondered if I can get them locally (I live in a smallish town). Do Sainsburys or Tesco stock any options or would I have to buy online or make a trip to somewhere bigger once the travel restrictions have been lifted (I don't drive).

OGC range - especially the Orchid Oil

Budget is no problem for me and I swear by these 😍

severusbadger · 11/10/2020 15:57

Sorry OGX

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 11/10/2020 16:00

Johnson's baby shampoo is silicone and sulphate free now and is usually available widely. Many of the Alberto Balsam products are too which are stocked in our nearby Sainsbury's Local and I see about in quite a few shops (need to double check the label though as the older stock may not be silicone free)

lilacmoon78 · 11/10/2020 16:01

I use johnson's baby shampoo which is sulfate free and the garnier ultimate blends conditioner - the almond one and the coconut one are both silicone free

kipperskipper · 11/10/2020 16:23

Thanks - haven't used baby shampoo in a while but it might be worth a try! Never heard of OGX but I'll have a look out for it!

I bought this after a recommendation by the lady who did my hair for my wedding. I know it is not cheap but it is a very big bottle and lasts for a very long time! It is a very clean shampoo.

Looks good stayingalive.

Incidentally, do I need something that's sulphate free too or is silicone free enough?!

Alberto Balsam is good, and I’m normally a shampoo and conditioner snob

Thermo · 11/10/2020 16:37

sulphates can strip and dry the the hair, silcones coat the hair.

Neither are the worst things on the earth, but people tend to overuse them

VintageStitchers · 11/10/2020 16:37

Jeez, do not use Johnson's baby shampoo. It's awful stuff.

It's designed to have the same pH as tears so that's why it's a 'no cry' formula. Your natural hair pH is around a 5 and the baby shampoo is higher than a 7, and about the same as an alkaline perm lotion so it will strip out any colour and dry your hair out too. Just avoid it.

kipperskipper · 11/10/2020 16:41

Oh really Vintage? I have highlighted hair so that's maybe a worry! I've used Alberto Balsam a lot in the past but from googling it looks like you have to go for a specialist range to get sulphate free.

OGX

2Kidsinatrenchcoat · 11/10/2020 17:13

Faith in nature
Child’s farm (from the kids section but still really nice)
I did like OGX but found out they aren’t cruelty free and that’s a big no no for me

kipperskipper · 11/10/2020 17:40

Thanks *2Kids" - worth knowing these things!

I've tried about 3 different OGX shampoos, all made my hair feel like straw. I think Tresemme so silicone free which is quite good.

Are you trying the curly girl method or just looking to put less stuff in your hair?

If curly girl the idea is silicone and sulphate free. If not then you may find sulphate containing shampoos leave your hair feeling dry but ymmv.

kipperskipper · 11/10/2020 22:54

Not trying curly girl (although I think I have the kind of hair it would work with - it goes naturally wavy if I leave it to dry naturally) as it looks like it's too time consuming for full time life (unless there's a curly girl lite method I should try?). But my hair looks awful all the time and I don't really know why. It just never sits right and always looks a mess.

Some of the herbal essence ones are silicone and sulphate free. I use them in between pureology which is £££ but lasts for ages and leaves me with swishy salon hair!

Grapesoda7 · 11/10/2020 22:59

I get Cantu shampoo for my daughters hair from Sainsburys.

Mixingitall · 11/10/2020 23:09

I second Cantu, I use the shampoo, conditioner and curl formula. You can buy on Amazon and in Super drug too.

kipperskipper · 11/10/2020 23:20

I went and bought a range. Some pure clear herbal essences brand which said no silicones but also a few of the Organic Oil ones (I know that brand well actually, don't know why they're called OGX? - is that on the packaging? I could study it but I'm tucked up in bed now and its's in the bathroom...and a L'Oreal clay one which probably wasn't free of either sulphate or silicone but that is apparently good for greasy roots and dry ends, which sounds like my hair. I never usually spend any real time looking at shampoo so today was an education! I'll probably go back for a second round when these ones don't give me the kind of hair that celebs get after a 2 hour blow dry appointment! What makes Cantu so good?

It seems like maybe everyone knows this already, but why should we be watching out for silicone in hair products? Is it bad for hair? Environment? Both?

Mixingitall · 12/10/2020 10:23

I have incredibly thick hair that’s dry, my hair is soft with lost of movement and if I leave to air dry, is wavy. It makes my hair super soft.

mocha78 · 12/10/2020 10:56

Really like the Herbal Essences bio renew Argan Oil of Morocco, not sure if it’s silicone free though.

Are you sure? I thought that was a myth about it being no tears as in crying and it’s actually means no tears as in won’t tear your hair and get knots for The kids. Ie tangle free
