Vertical split all the way down my nail

I have one nail that won’t grow, it splits vertically, I can see the line all the way down the nail - I’ve had it for years. Does anybody have advice on this please. I would love to fix it.

Have you seen your GP? A line all the way down the nail is worth getting checked out

I’ve had one for years and it grew out more recently. No idea why but maybe nutritional. My nails are better longer stronger generally. Do you take those tablets for nails.

Doseydots · 11/10/2020 09:48

I must have had it about 5 years, it’s not something I thought about going to my gp with. I take multivitamins but I may look at taking something for my nails. Would you recommend anything?

Biotin works really well when my nails are buggered.

TwoPlugs · 11/10/2020 09:53

My mum has had this and it can be related to psoriasis and types of arthritis. Defo worth a trip to the GP.

I have mild psoriasis OP and my nails easily split or tear. What works for me is vaseline applied throughout the day and last thing at night. But I tend to forget and my nails become ragged and split again.
The pic shows my worst finger which 2 weeks ago was split right into the pink. 2 weeks of vaseline and it's much better.

Oh I will try Vaseline thank you. Mines not as dark as yours, it doesn’t show on a photo. I used to have psoriasis on my head as a child but I grew out of it.

I have this too, it’s a real nuisance. Mine started when that finger end was broken.
The only thing a I’ve found works is to use a home gel manicure kit. I use it just on that nail & leave it, don’t try removing it, let it grow out & just top it up. I don’t use it on the other nails often because of the removal problem.

Which home manicure kit do you use olease

I had some success with a hair and nail supplement, plus applying CND Rescue Xx religiously every day. It took a while, so you have to persevere, but it definitely improved.

The CND Rescue is available from Amazon.

Had this on the middle toe of my left foot for a couple of years. In the last few months the split has actually grown out. Looks like I'm now getting one on my big toe . . .

Sedhuko · 11/10/2020 20:04

I have this too on the nail of my right middle finger. Interesting to read a PP saying it’s linked to arthritis as I’ve got a Heberden’s node on the same finger, which I think is the result of working with a computer mouse for years. I just cut my nails really short as the split nail catches on everything.

Chewbecca · 11/10/2020 20:07

I have one too, I just keep it as short as possible to avoid catching on stuff.

I do have arthritis too so odd / interesting to see that mentioned!

honigbutter · 11/10/2020 21:57

I kept it short too and a little nail hardener just on the tip where the nail tended to split helped to avoid catching it on things,

MoltonSilver · 11/10/2020 22:24

I have found that the only way to get rid of there's is to keep the mail ridiculously short until out grows out ie cutting a tiny silver every day or every second day. It too a few years of trying everything until I specified this.

ApolloandDaphne · 11/10/2020 22:29

I have one too and also have arthritis and Heberdens nodes. I get gel nails done which means I can have longer nice looking nails.

Doseydots · 12/10/2020 06:58

Thank you everyone. I am going to keep
It short and try to grow it out. I am going to get some hair, nail and skin vitamins too.
