Fine hair advice

I have very fine hair, collar bone legnth. Someone once described it as baby hair. Last had highlights two years ago so they have grown out and look quite natural. So It's mid dark-brown with lighter ends .

I wash it everyday and dry it quickly. It's doesn't hold a blow dry or any style really. Kirby grips slide out There isn't really enough to braid. It's really flat and needs constant brushing as gets really tangled. My scalp is visable at the crown and parting.

So I'm bored and need a pep up!

I'm thinking balayage with natural roots? Cut to shoulder length? Buy a revlon one step? Olaplex? Alpecin?

I'm 40 and like to think fairly stylish! I do like the balyage pics. It can't have it curled all the time as a) I can't do it and b) it will be a tangled mess! I do like it longish as have had short hair nearly all my life so would like to avoid a severe cut.

@cherrypiepie
My hair sounds like yours. Fine and thin. Crap combo so I sympathise.
I have managed to train it to be able to not wash it every day. I used to have wash it every day as it was greasy. Now I can get away with washing it twice a week, sometimes longer. So it can definitely be done. You just have to push through the first few weeks where your instinct is to wash it. Dry shampoo is a god send. Plus gives extra volume.

I also use a volumizing mousse post washing. And dry my hair upside down.
Then when dry I do a bit of gentle backcombing at the roots and sprinkle this in.

The powder really helps to give extra grip.

I have baby fine hair but a lot of it so maybe that makes a difference, in that it can seem to take virtually anything - constant bleaching, heat treatments etc without complaint. Did your hair actually react badly to the dying last time? Or were you just prepared to assume it did?
Two things I’d really recommend: go all out to find a hairdresser who specialises in fine hair - this has made all the difference for me - and try some L’Oreal oil on it. Slap it all over and see - this stopped greasiness at the roots for me and also is much better than any conditioner for adding swooshy volume!

@phoolani specialist fine hair dresser is my hair goal! I didn't know such a thing existed!

To be fair to my hair it's quite a nice rich brown and the highlight i had two years ago when I got married and they didn't damage my hair. Going back several years I went through a highlights and repeated flatiron curling and it just frazzled off gradually and I got a cute chin length that bob then. I blamed the flat iron at first (ghd) but having watched brad mondo I realise it was the bleach!

Specialist may be over-stating it! But after years of crap cuts, I now have a hairdresser who understands what my hair will and won’t do. I’ve gone from using a ton of hairspray trying to ‘fix’ my style to using basically none because the cut is right in the first place. I don’t know how you find one - I lucked out with mine - but maybe try asking around for recommendations?

Stockwell20 · 11/10/2020 22:44

Not sure how you feel about extensions but since having a few tape extensions put into my very thin hair it’s made the world of difference. Not only can I do so much more with it (I now have an actual ponytail!) my own hair is in much better condition as I don’t have to wash and straighten it every day. Sounds dramatic but it’s been a life changer for me.

OrangesAndDachshunds · 12/10/2020 18:35

I feel you op, I have thin/fine hair also. Have you tried clip in extensions atall? Clip ins dont damage your hair as much as permanent - dramatic as it sounds, they honestly have changed my life. You can use as many or as few as you like, so you don't have to have a full head of extensions if you don't want too.

BradleyCooperwillbemine · 12/10/2020 20:04

There is only so much products will do for baby fine hair (I speak from experience). Why not look into extensions or a hair topper. I bought a hair topper at the beginning of the year, its not had too much use due to lockdown, but its fantastic. I get loads of compliments and no more bad hair days.

minipie · 12/10/2020 20:56

I have the same hair OP

Highlights make a big difference. They also dry my hair out which is bad for the ends but actually helps me go longer between washes. So highlighted with regular trims is probably the way to go.

I have also recently had a revelation. I started taking a thyroid support supplement (i am mildly hypothyroid) and I have grown a whole load of new hair! Hairdresser confirmed it. So if you are hypothyroid I would definitely recommend that.

AuldFox · 12/10/2020 21:16

I’m mildly hypothyroid as well minipie, could you please tell me which supplement works for you? Thanks!

minipie · 12/10/2020 21:26

Sure - I’m taking Thyro Complex made by Nutri Advanced. I’ve also been taking their DIM and Ferrodyn supplements, so I suppose it could be one of those that helped my hair but would imagine it’s more likely to be the thyro complex.

MozzchopsThirty · 12/10/2020 21:32

What is a hair topper?? Link pls
