Nickel Allergy - Anyone able to recommend Make-up?

I am allergic to nickel and have now been told to avoid Iron oxides with certain numbers (I have a list of them)

My make-up which I don't use much all seems to contain the things I need to avoid. Has anyone found any nickel free make-up? I have googled, but so far not had any luck other than a couple of things that are only available in America. I am looking for foundation and concealer mainly.

That’s interesting OP I’m allergic to nickel and am also allergic to virtually every foundation - I’d never linked the two but maybe they’re connected? Through trial and error I’ve established I can wear several by Estée Lauder: hydra quench (the new one), aqua brilliance and double wear light (not the normal double wear though) and their brush on bb highlighter which I use as concealer. Maybe these would be ok for you?

I'm allergic to nickel, mostly Use benefit and never had an issue

MoreRainbowsPlease · 10/10/2020 00:17

Thank you both, I will look into those.

ZowieCavie, they have told me to avoid iron oxides, which are used in foundations to give them their colour. On an ingredients list they start with CI and then have several numbers afterwards. I have a list to check against!

How interesting. I react to make up and had no idea it was related to my nickel allergy! I also notice that make up is ok when freshly opened but when it gets old it gives me a rash... Not sure it's related?

ZowieCavie · 10/10/2020 15:05

Thanks OP I will look out for that. I also have problems with mascara but can wear EL sumptuous extreme

MoreRainbowsPlease · 10/10/2020 22:16

askinfforfriend, I have similar in that I seem to be ok with a foundation for a bit and then suddenly I'm not. I wonder if it is something to do with how long it's been opened for.

Gosh following too. I'm allergic to nickel (quite significantly) and I've been allergic to loads of foundation and never made the connection.

whysorude · 11/10/2020 15:35

OP could you please post that list? I also have a nickle allergy but was not supplied a list of iron compounds to avoid.

MoreRainbowsPlease · 11/10/2020 17:31

The list of iron oxides they have told me to avoid are

CI 77489
CI 77491
CI 77492
CI 77499

From the research I've done so far, these are used in cosmetics to give them their colour. So they are in all the foundation, concealer and blusher that I have looked at. As well as some eye shadows. I am not a massive make up wearer, I probably only wear it a couple of times a week, but I am quiet upset about not being able to wear it.

I have eczema, which is one reason why I don't wear make-up very often as my skin is quite often very flaky and make-up makes that look worse, but my skin tome is very uneven after being damaged by a life time of eczema, so I do like being able to make it look even on special occasions. However now I know about the iron oxides being in make-up that does explain why I then get skin problems after wearing it!

I am also now looking at products to try an improve my skin's texture and colour, as that might be my only option as I am having no luck so far finding nickel free foundation.

Dr Hauskau

Have very gentle ingredients and is fine for my very sensitive skin

whysorude · 12/10/2020 11:31

Thanks for the list MoreRainbowsPlease.

On the Eco Verde website you can search for 'nickle-free' makeup. Though most of the products on the site are lesser known brands, ive had no problem with the quality of my orders from them.

carlycornwall · 13/10/2020 22:32

This is fascinating. I had horrendous issues with Clinique airbrush concealer round my eyes. Took months and steroids to shift.

I'm so allergic to nickel that jeans studs or belt buckles set me off in minutes. Always have to wear a long vest as a barrier.

Never made the link..

MrsPeacockDidIt · 14/10/2020 22:24

I’ve always known I had allergy to nickel but I had a full skin allergy test done earlier this year and the consultant said my reaction to nickel was as bad as she’d ever seen. I don’t wear make up often but I’ve just checked the ingredients on the BB cream I use and it has 3 of the numbers listed above but I’ve not had an issue with it. Mine is benefit big easy although I think it’s discontinued now.

GuyFawkesDay · 14/10/2020 22:36

This might explain why I've reacted to some!

NuzzleandScratch · 20/11/2020 19:25

Just reviving this thread, as I've just found out today I have a nickel allergy, and am also allergic to cobalt and chromium. I was given the same list of CI numbers as you op, and have discovered in horror that all my make up contains this! Some good advice on here already, but would appreciate any insight anyone else has. I developed eczema for the first time on my face a few months ago, hence the patch testing.

MoreRainbowsPlease · 20/11/2020 20:43

NuzzleandScratch all may not be lost! It does appear that all make up contains the CI ingredients as it provides the colour, but I found this website skinsafe. It is an American site, but it says that the products listed on here contain the CI ingredients, but at an amount at least10 times less than that needed to cause a reaction in most people. I have ordered a foundation listed on here to give it a go (I got it from QVC so if I react to it I have 60 days to send it back). Unfortunately my eczema has flared up on my face so I am waiting for that to go down before I give it a try.

I looked at the ecco verde website that whysorude recommended, and you can filter products by clicking on nickel free, but when you look at the ingredients list they do have CI ingredients, but they also appear on the skin safe site, so I assume they have the very low levels of nickel.

However since looking into this I have found that nickel is in virtually everything at some level, even food. Some of my eczema they think is due to me reacting to the nickel in my sweat! And I can't do anything about that. Luckily I don't wear make up that often so if I can find a foundation and concealer that I can wear occassionally then I will be happy.

Thanks so much for replying @MoreRainbowsPlease, this is so helpful! How careless of you to sweat nickel!! The nurse I saw today said that you can get particles of nickel on your hands if you've touched metal, which can then cause a reaction on your face if for example you then apply face cream. With regard to that Ecco verde website, I notice some products there say 'nickel tested', do you know what that means? I notice in my foundation that these ingredients are quite near the bottom, so presumably present in only small amounts, whereas they seem to be higher up in things like eye shadow. I stopped using make up altogether when this eczema issue flared up, but have used it a couple of days a week more recently, and can't say it's caused a problem. But I don't want to cause a problem if there's a cumulative effect. Would be interested to hear how you get on with that QVC foundation! The problem for me is that I'm also apparently allergic to chromium, which also seems to be in some make up. Annoying!

pleasestoprainingplease · 20/11/2020 23:04

Wow this is so interesting. I react to foundation and mascara and now I wonder if it's allergies
