A vintage fur? Mum died and has several fur coats. 40+ yrs old. One well worn; the other barely out of it’s cover.

I’d wear vintage fur in those circumstances yes. And I’m a vegetarian 😂

NC4Now · 06/10/2020 20:54

No, I don’t think I could bring myself to.

GallopingGreen · 06/10/2020 20:55

I would!

I’m veggie and clearly just as bad Blush

I was given a fabulous coat once. Beautifully cut 70's style, suited me perfectly. I couldn't get my head past the dead animal so in the end it went to a charity shop. HOWEVER, I'm clearly a hypocrite, I wear leather shoes, have a leather handbag and a leather belt.

Reddog1 · 06/10/2020 21:05

My initial reaction is no but I wear leather, eat fish so .... hypocrite!

Possiblynotever · 06/10/2020 21:09

I had the same problem and decided that yes I would. It was very precious for a person that was very dear to my family.
A friend of mine spent quite a lot of money and had the fur inserted inside a hoodie raincoat....quite beautiful and you do not see the fur....( which I personally do not like and would not buy)

CharlottesComplicatedWeb · 06/10/2020 21:16

Interesting.

I don’t eat meat. Well, nothing with 4 legs. I eat chicken, fish, eggs. Wear leather. I always thought I’d either charity shop it or have in the back of the car for emergencies but... I’ve has a look at it and it’s stunning.

And yet... it’s gone back in the wardrobe, wrapped in tissue paper and in a box. My Mum wore it for many many years and always got comments on it but then, she was old fashioned and never thought twice about the provenance.

CatherineTheNotSoGreat · 06/10/2020 21:18

Yes I would. Unless I didn’t like it. It’s special to you, and probably to your mum. And it deserves to be worn by someone. It would be wrong to just throw it out.
I qualify this by saying I wouldn’t buy a fur coat now. But I would love to wear my mum’s. She did have a lovely one. We still have to go through her stuff, Sad I might come across it.

CharlottesComplicatedWeb · 06/10/2020 21:19

The mink and the fox... no. Couldn’t even try them on. My niece will have one and said she’d have it made into a gilet. The mink doesn’t even look real, it’s so perfect but the (whatever it is) one in the style of a 40’s Joan Crawford coat is just lovely. My mum’s been gone for a while now and I just can’t make a decision.

I eat meat, wear leather, plus have loads of faux fur coats, but I just couldn’t. It’s absolutely, completely, hypocritical, I know, but for some reason I have a sort of instinctive internal shudder at the thought.

My mum inherited a beautiful one from my gran, but felt the same. It was full length, a proper floor sweeper, and she had a friend make it into a throw type thing for the bottom of the bed. (Her cat was delighted.)

Dizzywizz · 06/10/2020 21:34

Not quite on topic, but this has reminded me of an old sheer cardi of my grannies that I found in the loft when I was about 10 and fell in love with. It had fox fur around the neck AND THE FOXES HEAD ON IT!!!!!!! Vile when I think of it now...I never wore it out, just around the house with red lipstick on! 🤣🤣🤦🏻‍♀️

Craftycorvid · 06/10/2020 21:35

I’m in a slightly similar position, OP. My late mum had what was called a ‘beaver lamb’ coat which she bought to wear on her honeymoon and forever after it sat under a cloth cover in the wardrobe. It’s immaculate (if a tad musty) . It also weighs a tonne! I’ve tried it on and don’t know how DM moved in it. My philosophy is generally that the animal that provided the fur died a long time ago and all I can do to respect its life is not let this coat go to waste. No idea what to do with it yet though.

Ginger153 · 06/10/2020 21:43

When winter comes, wear it and enjoy being glamorous in it. Jeans, lovely jumper, fur and trainers are a winning combo. I'm a veggie and wear old fur with joy! Your mum would love it, I'm sure.

MrsJBaptiste · 06/10/2020 21:48

Hell, yeah I'd wear it without a second thought!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 06/10/2020 21:48

dizzy my gran had a similar thing but it was a whole fox that clipped its tail in its mouth to make a kind of scarf (stole?). I was obsessed with it as a child.

Mine too!

Anyway I would wear it but then I'm Canadian.

StCharlotte · 06/10/2020 22:53

The fur coat that is - not the clippy fox. I'm not a monster!

CharlottesComplicatedWeb · 07/10/2020 13:35

😂😂😂 Thanks for the replies. Some funny stories.

I do agree in that it has been dead for probably 45-50 years. It’s not coming back to life any time soon. I’ve had a look at a website which buys furs but I can’t do that either.

I’ll get it out later and walk about the house in it. See how I feel. My mum called it “the workhorse” as it had done so many years. She’d had it stored at one point when she went to live abroad and it has had some repairs to the lining, over the years. She stopped wearing it the winter before she died as it too weighs an absolute tonne.

I wouldn’t wear real fur. I’m vegan - but it’s more about how it feels/it would creep me out to be honest. Ethically I wouldn’t have a problem with it if it’s vintage.

If you don’t think you’ll wear it could you have it made it into something else you might wear?

MoltonSilver · 07/10/2020 13:44

I had the same dilemma. In the end I decided that, aside from any other concerns, we just don't have the climate for it. Cars and buildings are kept so much warmer than they used to be. Unless you're outside a lot in below freezing conditions you might find the heat over whelming.

steppemum · 07/10/2020 13:47

we used to have my Great Auntie's fox in our dressing up box. She was quite a character, and quite well off. (and died in abotu 1920, so definitely vintage)
The fox was a whole flat body, dangly legs. the mouth had a spring, so you could open it and it clasped the tail, so you wore it round your neck.

We were quite fond of it as kids, it was amazingly soft and beautiful.
When our children found it in my Mum's dressing up box, they all completely freaked out! We had to remove it. Couldn't bring oursleves to get rid of it for ages though, because we knew it would be thrown out.

There was a coat too. lovely. But neither mum nor I coudl ever bring ourselves to wear it.

CharlottesComplicatedWeb · 07/10/2020 13:47

Have lifted it out. It smells of her.

There are tissues in her pockets (she was always in the habit of keeping folded clean tissues in her coat pockets). The dog is sniffing it and wagging her tail... she was always a grandma’s girl.

It has a lovely collar and 3/4 cuffed blouson sleeves which I’d kind of forgotten about. It IS lovely. Even so, can’t bring myself to try it in, yet.

Front and back pics. Big sleeves on the thing!

I lived in Central Asia for a while, and fur was the only really good winter coat. So different when it is about warmth.

CharlottesComplicatedWeb · 07/10/2020 13:49

Actually, I’ve no idea what it is. And I’ve just noticed the lining has her name printed into it. I’ve never seen that before. It feels like a piece of history.
