What to wear - in laws house

So, I am going to stay with my in laws over Christmas for around 2 weeks where they will be meeting my DC for the first time. They live in a very rural area and although we will be going on walks most days, I suspect the majority of the time will be spent indoors.

I am currently on maternity leave and I usually wear pyjama bottoms and a top around the house but I wouldn't feel comfortable wearing this around my in laws all day.

Any suggestions on the kind of outfits I could buy to wear that are both comfy and don't look like I've rolled out of bed?

Also I am on SMP so I don't have too much money to spend.

Do you still have maternity leggings?

Toilenstripes · 06/10/2020 14:59

Seasalt style tunics over leggings and boots.

Boohoo and pretty little thing have had some nice jumper dresses that you can wear with leggings and they’re not expensive.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 06/10/2020 15:02

2 weeks bloody hell! Are you mentally prepared for that? Have you got loads to entertain the kids?

I'd go for thicker quality leggings, Sainsbos £10 are good and tops you can layer, thinner blouse/tunic and a cardi/wrap if it's cooler in the house.

chromis · 06/10/2020 15:16

Don't forget hard soled warm slippers for indoors if the really rural is also a draughty period house or with flagstone floors.

And good waterproof shoes or boots for cold muddy walks.

BlueJava · 06/10/2020 15:21

Take a hot water bottle if you think it might be cold - nothing worse!!

MikeUniformMike · 06/10/2020 15:31

Tunic dresses or sweatshirts, or longinsg jumpers with black or dark leggings.
If you're likely to be outdoors, some boots or wellies and a rainproof coat.
Slippers that aren't too slipperlike for indoors, birkenstock types or slip-on plimsolls are good.

I'm sure you have a good reason for saying this but you should tell us what it is, rather than assuming people will know or will just take your word for it

Get some maternity lounge wear or tracksuits .. then can look good if matching and made of wool type material rather than jogging bottom material . Tesco is fab for this , just size up in normal sizes .

AllDayHappyHour · 06/10/2020 15:39

Leggings and jogging bottoms!

Also 2 weeks?! Can you cut it down???

Titsinknicks · 06/10/2020 15:46

Two weeks! First time meeting your kids?! Woah.

Wear whatever you're comfy in. Replace pyjama bottoms with leggings. Sorted.

Boohoo allegedly knew about illegal pay and poor conditions in their suppliers UK factories but still used them.

To the OP - warm and cosy clothes. Perhaps a pair or loungewear bottoms for lounging on sofa but nothing you would actually wear in bed.

AnnaMagnani · 06/10/2020 15:56

I turned up to my in-laws wearing what I'd normally wear i.e. jeans and a hoodie.

We were going out to a restaurant later - fine, it wasn't fancy, I'd be in jeans and a hoodie.

Imagine my total panic when everyone went off to get changed in order to go out Grin I hadn't packed anything else and so was sat there on the sofa in terror until everyone else came down looking like they were going to a wedding Shock

When we got to the restaurant, everyone except my inlaws was wearing jeans and a hoodie GrinGrin

So, anything above pyjamas, you will be fine!

If the budget is a bit low go buy a few pairs of leggings thick type. Primark do a pair in the shape wear section that are really comfy not at all see through and comfortable. Then maybe go to your local charity shop for long comfy jumpers and tunics and chunky Cardys.

Thanks all. I appreciate your concerns regarding staying for 2 weeks! We are actually staying for 10 days and they live in another country and haven't been able to visit DS who will be 6 months by then. They both work so hoping they will be out quite a bit and it won't be too intense.

I think I will buy a few t shirt dresses, leggings, joggers, long cardigans and slipper boots. Any suggestions on where to buy these are welcome

Primark had some jumper dresses this weekend, and lots of longish cardigans. H&M ditto.

glasshalfsomething · 06/10/2020 19:50

Try Sainsburys!

daisydalrymple · 06/10/2020 19:56

George at Asda also tend to have these types of styles, depending on what supermarket you have near.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 06/10/2020 19:57

Not to state the obvious, but are you BF-I get? Because doing that in front of your FIL in a jumper dress or tunic is not going to work...

M and S had some really nice Hush knock-off loungewear when I looked during lockdown.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 06/10/2020 19:57

BF-ing, not at all sure what BF I getting is! Grin

CountFosco · 06/10/2020 20:39

Are you still at a higher weight than you were pre-pregnancy? Are you BF? What is the temperature going to be like? Hotter or colder or the same as the UK? All of these will affect what you buy.

Ask your DH how often you are likely to have dressy occasions. My family (British, very rural) dress up all the time so we need to take a mix of very casual suitable for a windy walk. And legging don't cut it, take some jeans, much more sturdy plus a warm jumper, decent walking boots and a water and rain proof coat. That's northern Scotland though, jeans are probably no good in northern Scandinavia. Then in addition several outfits suitable for going out for dinner at a naice restaurant, a fortnight would require about 5 such outfits which is more than a usual year at home, I end up wearing work clothes which feels wrong but works well enough since work is smart casual.

If BFing wear cardigans and separates, only way to cover up side boobs.

AriettyHomily · 06/10/2020 20:51

Why wouldn't you wear what you normally wear or am I missing something?

ArtieFufkinPolymerRecords · 06/10/2020 21:09

She said she normally wears pyjamas around the house, but wouldn't want to at the in-laws house.

i would just swap joggers for the pyjamas.
