Do hair colour removers really work?

I had my hair coloured in a salon about 9 months ago, and currently have about 1.5 to 2 inches of root showing. I don’t like the colour I have in, it’s too warm for me but when I asked in the salon if it could be removed they have recommended a darker colour on top with foils, which will cost about £120. I did say that I just wanted it all removed but they said that the colour removers you can buy in the shops wouldn’t take my hair back to its natural colour so now it seems I’m stuck with colouring it again.

Apart from just cutting it all off and starting again, is there anything else I can do?

Why don't you have your hair balayaged so that it breaks up the colour and you can go lighter?

Hair colour strippers are terrrrrrible for your hair condition, making it hard to deal with after, and if you're taking out a dark colour it will probably end up orange. Not a great base for dying upon.

@TrollTheRespawnJeremy I was hoping to be done with colouring for good, I don’t want it to go any more orange!

Warm colours have red tones which you're going to just have to break up and hope for the best. Or go darker. Or accept growing out your tideline of dye.

I can promise you that only more dye will come of stripping your hair.

Oh well, I’m going to have to go a bit darker and just grin and bear it till it grows out.

If you move away from block colour to something with lowlights and highlights, you won't perceive the additional darkness the same. Or it could counteract against the warm tones you already have.
