Moisterizer ingredients

I'm in the market for a new day time and night cream.
I really like the Kielhs for daytime and trilogy rose hip cream for night however after much education on these boards I've come to realize that expensive moisterizers aren't all they are cracked up to be.
What ingredients should I be looking for/avoid?

Me too. No help but watching this.

I am on the hunt for better skincare too, I think vitamin C, retinol are the gold standard.

Other things like acids perhaps are required for specific skin concerns like breakouts etc.

I started on 'the ordinary' as per recommendation here, the Retinoid milder than retinol was ok but didn't like the vitamin C.
I use a basic cetaphil lotion and have ordered Cerave (good reviews here) for a night cream as it apparently has some ceramides which are good for skin. I add a few drops of rose hip oil for when my skin feels drier with just lotion.

Girlintheframe · 05/10/2020 08:58

I've tried cerave for night cream but don't like, feel greasy when I wake up. I love a thick rich night cream but needs to not leave me greasy.
The cerave hydrating face wash is really good.
Vit C / been using Medicj 8 tho tbh the only vit c which seemed to make a difference was TO 23%. It's all such a minefield!

I watched The Truth About on bbc1 with cheryl healey the other day, should still be available online, where they basically said retinol (working up from 0.1% to 1%, dont just start high as you will get a rash and itchiness) and look for water retaining ingredients such as glycerine.

They tested dear stuff and cheap stuff in makeup and moisturiser. Small studies right enough but interesting.

Retinol definitely works for me. I only use in the winter as I’m more confident I’ve applied sunscreen better then and the suns not as strong (you must use sunscreen with retinol).

redferrari · 05/10/2020 12:08

@Elieza which retinol do you use? I am using the ordinary 2% but it's Retinoid. It's been fine but I want to move up to next one.

@Girlintheframe I have ordered the smoothening cream from Cerave. Now I am wondering if it's going to be greasy as I have combination skin with dry patches.

I have dry/combination skin too Redferrari but more prone to the dry. I’ve been getting samples to try as find it hard to get creams that suit my skin/texture I like.

I quite like the neutrogena hydro boost cream. They do both a day and night cream. They’re inexpensive and feel really nice on skin

I use Beauty bio r45. It was on a special on qvc U.K. I’ve ordered other stuff from Amazon but it’s not come yet.

Any old moisturiser will do. Seriously, it's there to moisturise.
You want, if possible, peptides and ceramides, glycerine.
Vit C in a morning serum (L-Ascorbic acid is the best ingredient to look for) will make a massive difference. It needs to be with a % of ingredient that does something though. Millions of creams tell us they are vit C and you look and it's the next to last ingredient.
Retinol if you want anti ageing but it needs to be a % (don't fall for companies who tell you their retinol is 1.5% because that's what it's carried in, the retinol will be something like 0.3% which for a first retinol is fine)

I am very meh about companies who want me to buy 10 cheap products which all contain one active ingredient. I've been there, and done that. TO, Garden of Wisdom, inkey list etc. Was my skin any better than when I used one £30 serum containing everything? Nah.

Moisturiser, I love l'Occitane Divine. Is it any better than Olay? Nope. I treat myself every now and then.

Kiehl's stuff is fab, I love the avocado eye cream. A £100 cream isn't going to be any better than the Kiehl's you like OP.

TheSeedsOfADream · 06/10/2020 07:14

The retinoid 2% from TO is actually 0.2% of active ingredient. Nadine Baggott has a YT video about retinol/retinal/retin-A/retinoids and similarly Vit C's. I'm just finishing a GOW 23% vit C with ferrulic which did not nearly as much as the Vichy 15% I've gone back to.

That's really knowledgeable and helpful thanks!

Smile I learnt it all from Nadine Baggott on Insta. She's fabulous and always breaks down ingredients lists so you know what you're really getting.

DesignerDesigner · 06/10/2020 10:04

I've read zillions of comments by dermatologists and they all say the same thing..

your moisturiser is to stop water evaporating from the skin

So they say anything that is classed as a moisturiser will do.

The best you can hope for is that one with hyaluronic acid in will plump up your skin a bit.

Anything else is smoke and mirrors.

Vit C might help exfoliate in a gentle way but not much else.

Retinol might reduce wrinkles but it can be detrimental to dry skin or delicate skin and you really need prescription strength to work.

The BEST buy of all is a good sun block of spf 30+ used every single day when it's cloudy as well as sunny. it's the UV light that causes sagging, wrinkles and dark spots.

TheSeedsOfADream · 06/10/2020 10:44

Oh yes, absolutely. Frezyderm 50 is my HG. It's a primer and a SPF so speeds up the routine too!

Girlintheframe · 06/10/2020 11:13

Yet I think it's the smoke and mirrors I get caught up in Confused

Thanks @TheSeedsOfADream and @DesignerDesigner - Great advice and yes 3/4 TO I ordered were just ordinary. The price is the attraction I guess.

redferrari · 06/10/2020 12:19

That was supposed to be 3/4 products from TO...I spent nearly 30 and only the retinoid was ok and now I discovered that it's only 0.2 not 2% as I assumed it was!
