Mid 40s brunette going grey, what’s the best way to cover it up?

So I’m naturally a very dark brown. I am getting quite a lot of grey. I’m combatting this by chucking a dark brown box dye over it about every 4-5 weeks and then it needs doing again due to grey hairs.

I have previously tried copper coloured highlights and it still needed doing every 4-5 weeks which I don’t really have the time or money for when going to the hairdressers.

Is there anything I could do where it would only need every 8 weeks? Would going blonde make the grey less noticeable? I’m not sure I’d suit blonde all over but I’m willing to try it.

I am also in the same boat and find the clairol root touch up really good for this. It's any cheaper than the full head dye but makes it look more natural and both my friend and I have found it blended in well. I used light Ash brown which goes on quite dark Smile

I'm naturally mousey brown (wouldn't presume to call myself brunette!). I've had it coloured with blonde highlights for years and years and as I've gone salt and pepper grey, I've been taking the blonde lighter and more ashy with a purple toner as well, with the aim of blending it in more with the grey at the hairline and temples. My ultimate aim is to keep dying silvery grey-blonde until my own hair catches up and eventually I don't have to dye my hair at all!! It does take hours of bleach highlights, but I only go 4 times a year now because the blonde/grey blends in nicely with my natural grey as it grows in.

My mum and aunts are much darker than me. My mum dyes dark black-brown all over and has her roots done every 4-6 weeks plus clairol root touch up in between. One aunt has gone caramel blonde, the other has gone a sort of warm toffee brown. All take lots of upkeep or the greys show. They all think I'm absolutely mad for allowing the grey to grow in.
