Dresses for small waists but huge tummies?

I used to love wearing dresses, then I had a c-section and my stomach looks like I'm snuggling width ways baguettes, no matter what I do. I'm small on my waist and legs but do not want anything touching my stomach. None of my old dresses (I favoured a wrap style) look good. What would work but not make me look shapeless? I'm so sad about this! Tia!

You need something that fits and then flares. So no clingy jersey or shift dresses. It needs to be A line at least if not a properly flared skirt. I have the exact same problem and a flared skirt looks great on me because it shows off my small waist but hides the roll underneath! The heavier the fabric the better.

I wear straight dresses so they hand off my boobs and skim my tummy.

I find any other shape makes me look pregnant tbh Sad

Fit and flare in a decent fabric (not jersey as it clings to lumps and bumps). Then wear a waist belt at the slimmest point. I wear this style to work a lot. Also slim-ish everywhere except for my c-section car crash belly!

Agree with tooextra - fit and flare is the way to go. You want something nipped at the waist with a much fuller skirt , a line, half circle or full circle. Dresses described as skater skirt/skater dress often have this sort of shape.

Yes non-jersey fit and flare is the answer isn't it? I have some jersey ones and they look dreadful. Curse the section tummy disaster! Grin

Heaviee jersey can work, just not the thin stuff. Ponte is quite often good too

I have the same issue with a big shelf after two sections .

Hush Ivy dresses are my saviour. They don't sell them anymore but there are a few on their website with a similar flattering cut for those of us who need something to skim over tummies. I think they're called the Iris dress now. Or keep an eye on eBay. As usual, Hush sizing is ridiculous so size down.

I'm on the verge of ordering this shirt dress which I think will do a good job of concealing my 'baguette':

Another baguette smuggler checking in for ideas here! I tend to wear tunic style dresses with thick tights and long boots as my hips and legs are skinnier. And control pants.

It sucks.

jagoda · 04/10/2020 10:30

I wear shift dresses to cover up my tummy like Random Mess

If I wear a fit and flare it just draws attention to the flab.

ButterFox · 04/10/2020 11:08

We are all baguette sufferers! Will check out hush, though I can't do a high neck ala the Iris as I have big boobs so I'd really look like a sack of potatoes (and baguette).

It does sound like you've become apple shaped tbh.

V neck straight dresses - order some that shape as well and see what looks best on.

StatisticallyChallenged · 04/10/2020 12:07

I don't think the op is describing an apple shape at all. To me an apple shape lacks a defined waist and abdominal weight gain tends to be around the waist. That's not what the op describes.

I have about a 17" difference between my waist and hips so no way I could be described as an apple, but I definitely have a stomach to hide. And a fat ass Blush

TheRIDs · 04/10/2020 12:23

Shift dresses can work too, agreed. Need to have a v neck or low scoop for me though, as I’ve got a sizeable bust and can end up looking a bit matronly.

The fit and flare style described really is most flattering on me, but it’s hard to find the exact type I like (material, neckline, flare at the right point etc.). A lot of hit and miss ordering from online shops!

Sunshineskies · 04/10/2020 12:42

I have a similar shape (small waist and round tummy). I’ve recently discovered that some of the new look midi style dresses are flattering on me. They come in at just the right place on my waist and then fall loosely over my stomach. They had a better range over the summer but there’s a few still there.

Echobelly · 04/10/2020 12:46

Slightly high waists with a skirt that flares out - I'm fairly slim but with a stomach and I've found that shape is the most flattering for me.
