Wanting to be “dressed up” everyday?

MsAnnFrope · 02/10/2020 19:00

I’m sitting here in skinny jeans and v neck sweater, hair in a pony tail, no make up.
Is it wrong to want to wear dressy clothes in lovely fabrics every day? I’ve seen a gorgeous dress on eBay, Hobbs, silk, lovely colour. Does anyone look dressed up everyday, even when you are just wfh and doing the school run. Casual just feels so blah to me now!
Even if it was just wearing a cashmere sweater dress with silky tights the idea seems so appealing to me!

Please tell me I’m not alone??

I am entirely with you, OP. Even WAH during coronavirus I have been doing my hair, wearing my cashmere and silk, beautiful perfumes every day and my loveliest jewellery. I rarely wear make up right now but I do dust By Terry Hyaluronic powder throughout the day.

It's the small daily things like this that make me feel coddled - and which are lifting my spirits during these tricky times.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 02/10/2020 21:43

I’m not dressing up in silk frocks to sit at my kitchen table, but I am wearing nice outfits every day, makeup, and perfume. I’m probably on the more casual end of this thread (I don’t even own heels!) - today’s outfit was black balloon leg cords from Cos, with a slightly cropped black turtleneck from Other Stories, and white Stan Smiths. Big acrylic necklace, red lipstick.

I do tend to change out of work clothes once I finish though - I am in joggers now!

MsAnnFrope · 02/10/2020 22:13

Weirdly I wear gorgeous perfume everyday. Even my daughter comments that I always smell lovely.

Side note - if I like Bottega Veneta and Penhaligons Prima Donna perfume what else could I try

miss come and join us on the perfumista thread for suggestions!

I dress up every day - shower, makeup, do my hair, put on 'nice' clothes and jewellery.
I did before Covid and I do now - it makes me feel good, and I think maintaining a routine is good for my mental health.

The most exciting thing I do during the day is go for a walk to a local park with my toddler and dog.
I may be overdressed to some people, but I frankly don't care.

I don't own joggers and my pyjamas is nightwear or something I wear when ill or in hospital.

TheBlueStocking · 02/10/2020 22:24

I hate not getting to dress up for work or nights out. But I have been reaping a nice crop of charity shop delights for when I can dress up again. There's been so many lovely donations recently.

SmileyClare · 02/10/2020 22:37

Ooh good tip BlueStocking lots of people have probably used the extra time at home to de clutter.

Its the small things...which are lifting my spirits in these tricky times yes absolutely this. Have fun dressing up for the hell of it Op Smile

TheBlueStocking · 02/10/2020 22:40

They've been refusing donations for months because they are overwhelmed. I got the most gorgeous winter coat. Italian, with buttons all up the side in a military style. I checked their website and they usually go for €300.

SmileyClare · 02/10/2020 22:45

You've inspired me to have a trawl. That coat sounds magnificent.

ohtheholidays · 02/10/2020 22:52

I'm always dressed up as you call it.

I don't wear jeans,in the summer I wear summer dresses, skirts and tops and different types of pumps or sandals, unless were going out out and then I'll be wearing heels.

In the winter I wear dresses mainly, usually with tights and long boots,I have several pairs of long boots in different colours and tons of different bags to compliment what I'm wearing.

I can honestly say I'm never cold and I always feel comfortable as well,I like looking nice for my sake and I just wouldn't feel like me in jeans and trainers.

Oh and I have 5DC and a Grandchild now so having DC doesn't have to stop you dressing for yourself.

PurplePansy05 · 02/10/2020 22:57

I used to dress up every day. I have to say, I miss it now. I'm still pulling off smart casual these days, but it would be so nice to dress up regularly again.

StarlightLady · 03/10/2020 07:18

I think it helps with the feel good factor.

I love dresses. Dresses are my “go to” wardrobe item (obviously different dresses for different seasons) most days. And l always wear a little makeup.

I rarely wear “business trousers”, jeans tend to be confined to winter country walks and leggings for winter evenings.

Ardnassa · 03/10/2020 08:51

OP, what kind of scents do you like? My current favourites are the Creed rose scents - I actually get distracted by how lovely they smell and have to stop whatever I am doing in order to sniff my wrist :D

And I am not normally a florals woman either! But florals feel more right than my chypre scents for WAH.

WhatamessIgotinto · 03/10/2020 09:32

I've always been fairly casual but I hadn't realised how much I missed dressing for work until we were in lockdown. I'm a teacher and my school has a dress code anyway, but I've definitely made more of an effort since going back last month. I feel much better knowing that my make up and hair are done and I've thought more about what I'm wearing.

In my last school some of the staff would wear leggings and a jumper (secondary) but I never felt good dressed like that for work, particularly when we expect the children to be smart in their uniforms.

So now I'm all about nice dresses, tailored trousers and lovely fabrics. I feel much better!

foxtiger · 03/10/2020 16:59

I was WFH for about 3 months and I still dressed up most days - I don't mean I wore party dresses and tons of jewellery, but I thought about what I was wearing, and it was often something like a jersey dress with colourful shoes, and nearly always some make-up, including lipstick. I enjoy dressing nicely (according to my own tastes) and it would have felt like a deprivation, not a luxury, to wear nothing but t-shirts and trackie bottoms all that time.

In my actual job we're allowed to be dressy or not dressy as we please (the only real limitation being that we're on our feet a lot, so high heels are not a good idea), and I have always enjoyed wearing dresses and slightly vintagey styles there, but at the moment I'm choosing to walk quite a long way to work rather than go on public transport, so my style is to some extent dictated by what shoes I can comfortably wear. Now I've taken to keeping a couple of pairs of Mary Janes under my desk so I can walk in comfortable "bovver boots" - I probably look very indie on my commute!

Ghostlyglow · 03/10/2020 18:39

I've been a lot more "dressed up" since lockdown and WFH. i also make a point of putting on jewellery every day. DP thinks I'm nuts but it makes me feel better about a shit situation.

MsAnnFrope · 03/10/2020 18:41

Ah this is definitely inspiring me! I do have jeans on but I also have a silky top and fabulous red lip!

@foxtiger I adore the sound of your look! I like dressy with a bit of edge. I’m going to have a sort through my wardrobe and plan some lovely outfits for the week. Now I just need to find a look that goes with hiking boots and a Barbour - I spend a lot of time walking and I live in the north west Land of Rain!!

@WhatamessIgotinto my dd reception teacher dresses fabulously - despite the fact she is scrabbling around with the little munchkins!!

AnaViaSalamanca · 03/10/2020 18:59

You people should post your OOTD and inspire the rest of us. I am so firmly in the jumper and jeans (and that too on a good day!)

Okokokitsout · 03/10/2020 19:12

I can't be arsed. But it's nice to feel nice so do what makes you feel good. Not odd if you're just doing it for yourself go for it.

CharlottesComplicatedWeb · 03/10/2020 22:01

I wear jeans and jumpers (nice jumpers/tops) each day but I still do face and hair every day. Even if I’m just standing in a field, getting soaked.
