A proper old style Barbour?

actiongirl1978 · 02/10/2020 12:46

Didriksons

beguilingeyes · 02/10/2020 12:48

North Face, Seasalt are very good. I have a Jack Wolfskin that I bough from an Outlet Centre that kept me dry this morning.

With most ' waterproofing ' clothing you do have to (fairly regularly ) reproof them.
I live in the lake district and we hike often , so are used to wearing clothes that say they are waterproof .
Different materials use various reproofing methods. The ones we use you have to pre wash first (in special detergent ) and then a wash in reproof and dry in tumble dryer or outside on a warm day .

VictoriaBun · 02/10/2020 12:53

I should have added my walking jacket has been going over 10 years by using this method.

AnaViaSalamanca · 02/10/2020 12:56

Of course there is. You need to look at more technical clothing though. Look at waterproof ratings of 5000mm or more.

Oly4 · 02/10/2020 21:51

North Face arctic parka

thedevilinablackdress · 02/10/2020 21:57

Something rubberised will be most waterproof, but not very breathable. Stutterheim or Rains DK

vanillandhoney · 02/10/2020 22:01

Yes, but it really has to have a rating of 10,000ml plus. I used to work in outdoor retail - anything below that will get you wet in sustained downpours.

Brands like Rohan, North Face, Didrikson, Helly Hansen, Berghaus or any other mountaineering brand will be fine but you do need to reproof with Nikwax occasionally.

They probably won't be the most stylish but they will keep you warm. I have a Rohan Ascent jacket - four years old and like new. Can be machine washed and tumble dried no problem.

PestymcPestFace · 02/10/2020 22:05

Gore-tex

Frumpy, butch whatever, it is unfortunately the best.

Personally I just go for 20,000 mm per cm cubed or whatever.
Bottom line, yes but it costs to be waterproof

Asdf12345 · 02/10/2020 22:07

I stick with waxed cotton. Reproof three times a year and I stay nice and dry.

lazylinguist · 02/10/2020 22:09

I spent a day at the zoo in the hammering rain recently in my new Berghaus coat and was completely dry underneath at the end of it.

cricketmum84 · 02/10/2020 22:11

I have a northfqce that keeps me 100% dry. Would never buy another brand for walking!

SnugglySnerd · 02/10/2020 22:14

I love my Dridikson coat, warm and waterproof and really just looks like a parka. I bought it in the sales a couple.of years ago and it was such a good buy.

2Zebras · 02/10/2020 22:16

No.

PestymcPestFace · 02/10/2020 22:22

@2Zebras tempted to agree with you after some joker went through a puddle at 30 and the wave hit my face Grin Real shame as the other three driver who went through the flood tootled along at a sensible speed and only cause ripples around my ankles.

Vicliz24 · 02/10/2020 22:25

I have two protected species coats and both are absolutely completely waterproof. Neither of them look remotely functional they're very stylish.

LionLily · 02/10/2020 22:29

I have found the best thing to be an overlarge very cheap rather thin waterproof mac from Amazon, about £12, worn over my nice snuggly coat. It comes almost to my ankles. Not a drop gets through and I just hang it under the carport to drip dry.

movingonup20 · 02/10/2020 22:37

Yes, I have a mountaineering jacket, designed for Scottish mountains. It's excellent

movingonup20 · 02/10/2020 22:38

Mines rated 10,000

JosephineDeBeauharnais · 02/10/2020 22:44

Second what others have said - 10000 mm absolute minimum and that won’t be cheap. I have a Rab shell, a Rohan lightweight mac and a Seasalt Janelle. Rohan looks fab, really stylish great colour (aubergine) love it for warmer wet days. Janelle is the world’s ugliest, worst fitting coat but it’s truly waterproof, cosy warm and long. Rab is great for hiking and can be layered.
Those three coats between them cost more than £500. You get what you pay for with technical gear.

There are some right swines out there! I don't know why people think it's a funny thing to do.
