How long do your gel nails last?

charliehunnamssixpack · 02/10/2020 11:25

I go every two weeks but inevitably they are starting to lift or chip after a week. This doesn't feel like very good value for money! Am I too heavy handed or is this normal?

About 12 days. Certain colours lift more than others i have found.

AcrobaticCardigan · 02/10/2020 13:33

2 weeks tops - the gel itself lasts very well, it’s the regrowth I can’t stand.

chunkyrun · 02/10/2020 13:34

I could get 10days out of a salon. Bought my own kit, easy to do but I only get a week out of them. Still happy with it though saves me so much money

GoldenBlue · 02/10/2020 13:42

2-3 weeks if i'm lucky. Less than 2 in a bad week.

They generally don't chip but I catch them around the edge and at the bottom near the cuticle if the polish was applied just so and then they lift and come away.

BabyItsAWildWorld · 02/10/2020 13:47

Salon done 2 weeks.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 02/10/2020 13:55

God, I make mine last 4 weeks! The ones I've got on now have been 3 week and a few days, and I've got small chips to both thumbs and one index finger, but I'll need them to last another few days till Imy next appointment.

I don't get them done in a salon, instead by a qualified person working from their home. She does 4 coats, so a base layer, 2 of colour and a top coat. However, if I go for a glitter layer that's an extra layer of polish and I find those don't chip as easy. She good, and very cheap too, I couldn't afford it at salon prices every 2 weeks.

Of course, if its the regrowth that bothers you then its personal preference!

notangelinajolie · 02/10/2020 14:06

About a month. I don't go to a salon - a family member who used to work in a salon does it for me. They spend much more time time doing it than they would have been able to do in the salon. I always have a full manicure, nails filed and buffed, cuticle oil etc plus base, 3 layers and top coat.

I am told the brand of polish makes a big difference too.

Plump82 · 02/10/2020 15:37

I do my own and im getting 3-4 weeks.

Fluffycloudland77 · 02/10/2020 15:41

Are you apply nail oil 2-3 times a day?.

ZestyDragon · 02/10/2020 15:42

I get four weeks out of mine but they do apply a thick hardening gel before the polish goes on. It doesn't even chip.

selflove · 02/10/2020 17:02

Four weeks.

Used to get 2 max when I went to a salon, now I have a new lady and she's amazing. Four weeks and not a single nail has chipped or lifted. I usually try and aim for 3 or 3.5 weeks because of regrowth, but when it's been 4 weeks, the nails are still perfect

No - are you supposed to?!

I've seen two people at two different salons and had the same problem! May need to try a new nail lady.

snowone · 02/10/2020 17:30

I used to have mine done every 2 weeks, I've given over to it now!

Fluffycloudland77 · 02/10/2020 17:49

Buy some cnd solar oil. Apply 2-3 x a day.

Everytime you get your hands wet the nail rapidly absorbs oil and this makes it change shape slightly. This repeated wetting and drying eventually pulls the coating off the nail.

If the nails choc full of oil the water can’t get in, the nail doesn’t change shape and the coating is able to adhere.

Thanks so much, I'll try this!

Theloveltchebeemgee what polish does she use? Mine are all cheapies off eBay 😆 didn't know it made a difference

MrsPerfect12 · 02/10/2020 20:59

I don't get long out of get polish, probably a week or just over. Acrylics last me up to 6 weeks no probs.

Mrsmophead · 02/10/2020 22:31

I get them redone on day 29 entirely because they get too long but are otherwise perfect . My current nail lady is unreal.

justpoppy · 02/10/2020 22:34

10 days from a salon if I’m lucky! My nails are generally pretty shit though. I bought a kit and did them myself for a while and they lasted longer but I got bored of soaking them off each time I wanted to repaint them.

rosie1959 · 02/10/2020 22:37

I find the growth is the only problem they dont flake or chip

I do my own, and get about two weeks if I'm doing lots of manual work, more if I'm not.
By then, they're starting to grow out anyway.

EasterIssland · 02/10/2020 22:41

3-4 weeks.
Acrylic + shellac.

Lovetoridemybicycle · 02/10/2020 22:45

Old Salon with shellac 2 weeks, new nail lady in her home 4 weeks. She uses 'builder in a bottle' with a rubber top coat. I work in a very physical job, so go all out. Would last longer but for regrowth, they are still perfect at 4 weeks. This stuff you can file down and infill rather than soak off, so no repeated weakening.
