Should I get my hair cut short? (With video)

Hi everyone! I've NC so that I can show you a video of me because I'm really debating whether or not to get my hair cut off.

Back story is I completely fucked my hair up: dyed dark, hennaed, bleached, dyed dark again, bleached again, relentlessly over a few years. Now I have been waiting patiently not touching it, waiting for it to grow out.

I'm getting tired now though as the remaining bleached lengths are as stiff as straw, even straightening it doesnt make it look any better. You can see I have quite a bit of regrowth now.

Should I go and get all the lengths chopped off? Do you think I would suit short hair? I think my face isnt angular enough to pull it off.

Also things to bear in mind is I'm really low maintenance, dont want to have to do styling every day, plus dont know if you can see, but I have a kind of widows peak and cowlick thing going on at the front.

Any suggestions?!

Why are you speaking in French?

HairyAnon · 02/10/2020 11:11

It was part of a union thing! Just to show my face in "movement". I dont know if my face is too "big" for short hair if you get me. When I've seen women who look really good with short hair they tend to have very narrow faces

NoHunGosh · 02/10/2020 11:14

I think you'd regret it.

Prufrocks · 02/10/2020 11:23

I also think you would regret it.

How much love are you giving your hair? You say it’s stiff and straw like at the ends, but then you only mention straightening. Imo you should put the heat tools down and focus on putting something really nourishing on there.

viccat · 02/10/2020 11:30

I have a round face and short hair. I've had everything from very long hair always worn down to a pixie cut over the years. I think there's a short cut to suit every face shape and hair texture out there.

From my experience, a short bob kind of a style is probably the "best of both worlds" style - it's easy but you still have enough hair around your face to not feel quite so exposed on days when you don't feel confident... Still versatile enough to do a few different styles, too. It's also more forgiving as it doesn't need constant maintenance.

The shorter it is, the faster it seems to grow and a pixie style needs constant trims. It is super easy to wash though and styling takes 2 minutes. I love not feeling hair around my face and neck. It does feel like a bit of a statement. I'm so aware how I'm usually the only woman with short hair in any group I'm in. The shorter it is, the less styling options you have.

At the end of the day, it's just hair and it will grow back if you don't like it. Whenever mine is short I wish it was long and when it grows I start wanting to cut it short again!

gindinner · 02/10/2020 11:55

Oh my gosh, I think I'm in love with you!
But don't get your hair cut short, you'll regret it

justilou1 · 02/10/2020 12:08

Honestly? I think you’d look fabulous! You would suit a gamine look very well!!!

calabalamuc · 02/10/2020 12:28

I have recently got a fairly short pixie cut. When you say your face is big, well really, my face looks like a doughnut in comparison to your elfin features. And yet I have never been so complimented on my hairdo as in the past few weeks. I have been asked many times for the name of my hairdresser and that has never happened before.
What's more I love my hairdo, it is dead easy to style and no bother at all.
So either I had a totally crap hairdo before (possible) or I am disproving the myth that you have to look like Tilda Swinton to carry off short hair.
I say go for it. If it's rubbish it will grow.... and your lovely features will carry it off while it does.

LunaNorth · 02/10/2020 12:31

Here’s a video of me. Should I go brunette?

CarolVordermansBum · 02/10/2020 12:37

I had loads of my hair cut off recently as it had been through the mill and the ends were frazzled, and had some nice blonde balayage done. I didn't think I would like it short but i really love it! My hair feels so much better, even with the blonde in. Sorry you can't really see the length in the after photo, I had to crop some identifiable things out!

Thanks so much for these responses! You are very kind. It's interesting to hear from women who dont have very narrow faces and to be honest I am really tempted to just do it. Friends and family say it wouldnt suit me and can see other posters think the same. But its tempting...

Could also try just giving it way more love but part of me just wants to experience hacking it off for once. I've booked to go to the hairdressers at the end of this month (no availability before then!) and will obviously report back on what I do 😂

Friends and family say since I dont really accessorise or make an effort with clothes (I do wear makeup) that I'm going to look like a teenage boy 🤷‍♀️ @viccat and @calabalamuc did you find yourself dressing a little differently once you got your hair cut short?

@CarolVordermansBum Very nice. You have a lovely natural wave to your hair!

I find myself choosing to wear slightly edgier things with my short hair (not that I am a remotely edgy person) and giving a bit more thought to my earrings etc since they are more visible. I cycle lots and always worried about helmet head with short hair, but it's so short I just give it a scruffle when I get off my bike and it looks good again. Every day is a good hair day in pixieland Wink

merryhouse · 02/10/2020 13:23

I got a pixie cut about 8 years ago and have kept it ever since (though it stops being a pixie cut by the time three months is up, so I probably only actually have one for half the time...).

I have a very high and lopsided forehead, so the fringe is cut with that in mind. Stylist does something fancy with layering. I don't think my face is particularly slim. My head is decidedly large.

I wash it in the shower and simply pull it into place as I towel-dry.

I discovered why it's considered a lesbian cut: without exception every woman of my acquaintance said something along the lines of "I love your hair!" while with one exception every man said something along the lines of "oh!.... do you like it?" Grin

(The single exception was my husband, who said "wow, that's going to take some getting used to" but two days later came out with "I really like your hair like that"... I obviously made the right choice!)

Janegrey333 · 02/10/2020 14:39

Don’t have it cut. Pixie cuts are hard to grow out and need a lot of maintenance.

Nanny2many · 02/10/2020 14:45

I agree and think it needs something to tidy up ...... you could carry off a pixie cut for sure, you have big eyes and strong jawline. I wouldn’t go too short or too “styled” ie something with movement and looks more lived in than groomed into place.

The other thing going short might highlight is eyebrows..... you might want to get them professionally styled or if you can afford it micro bladed.

Let us know what you decide!

FrancesFlute · 03/10/2020 08:47

You're beautiful! I can see your hair looks bit damaged but I really like the length and wave - very indie.

NotMeNoNo · 03/10/2020 13:12

How does your face look when your hair is up off your face like a slightly messy ponytail?
I've got really thick hair that has a lot of width/volume , the pixie cut is better as it does slim my face.

BitOfFun · 03/10/2020 13:16

No, no, no, don't cut it! and please come and read to me in French every night until I fall asleep Grin

AnotheChinHair · 03/10/2020 13:55

don't do it

Silentplikebath · 03/10/2020 14:23

Be patient and wait for it to grow out.

HairyAnon · 07/12/2020 06:35

Hey folks! Thought I would do a little update with photo; as who doesn't love a good haircut photo update? 😂

I spoke to the hairdresser and we agreed that if you are low maintenance (aka zero styling, lowkey makeup and accessories, etc) short hair can be a bit tricky. So I went middle of the roady I'm sorry to say!

The point here was just to get rid of all the dead parched lengths so I've done that which is great! It feels amazing to have hair I can actually brush and run my fingers through. By the time it got to late November, the old hair had become genuinely unbrushable. Also what's great is I rediscovered I actually have some curl to my hair! Brilliant! This is what it looks like totally unbrushed in the morning.

She did a kind of side fringe thing which I like. I think my plan will be to grow it slightly longer but keep the side fringe and maybe make it heavier.

She said I was iver 50% grey. What! 😢 I'm only 34. I asked her to dye it as close as possible to my natural colour. She looked at the roots and said "a very dark cool blonde). So with that in mind I'm not too sure why I ended up an almost....dark auburn colour? 🤔

Anyway I'm going back in january/february to do something more interesting with the colour. Has anyone got any ideas? I think lighter suits me more (?), but I dont want to go down the route of destroying my hair again. Any ideas more than welcome!

You look fantastic!!

I do think lighter hair colour suits your colouring a bit more than the dark but you look beautiful regardless.

Chailatte20 · 07/12/2020 07:37

You look lovely, my friend had the same issue as you so she shaved all her hair off at the start of lockdown. A bit drastic I know but she's got gorgeous pixi style haircut now. Her hair is much healthier now with the new growth.

I'd be tempted ask the hairdresser to cut another 2/3 inches off each time I visited to get rid of 'old hair' as much as possible. As your hair is damaged due to excess colouring, I'd concentrate on deep conditioning and cutting off as much as possible.

mynewusernameisthis · 07/12/2020 08:20

Lighter hair for sure. I love it longer and that length suits too. But I wouldn't go shorter. Looks great!
