Been diagnosed with Rosacea - help!

At the beginning of Lockdown in March my skin seemed to get red on my cheeks and nose. I have tried to manage/cure it by changing skin care etc but no joy so contacted the doctor, who has diagnosed rosacea. Could be hormones /flushing which were bad Feb/March (I am at "that " time of life) stress or wind/sun from running.

I wear factor 50 on my face and have done since about end of March. Doctor has put me on doxycyline for 2 months. Taken about 4, woke up with really bad headache today. Also read I can't drink at all on it :-( Not that I drink much but do like a glass of wine at the weekend...and I do mean only one glass generally.....

Anyone any advise...my rosacea isn't as bad as some I have seen photos of but I wouldn't want to not wear make up as I am aware of the redness and tiny postules under my skin. Never had bad skin before...Mother Nature is a b*tch!

There are lots of dietary things . I stopped alcohol caffeine spicy food and tomatoes. It made a huge difference, this was years ago I stopped for about 6 months so you don't have to do it for the rest of your life. Hope you find something to help I know how miserable it made me. Good luck

Also worth seeing a dermatologist to confirm

Martinisarebetterdirty · 02/10/2020 08:22

Sorry @botemp for tagging you - I just know you have loads of useful advice and might be able to help.

botemp · 02/10/2020 08:38

I've been tagged Confused my advice is always to see a professional, preferably a dermatologist with a rosacea specialty, about it.

The short version of what you can do yourself, as above, diet is a major trigger, alcohol, specifically red wine. Avoid vigorous exercise.

Use mineral SPF as opposed to chemical, get yourself a sun hat and stay out of the sun. Use simple French pharmacy fragrance-free products (no essential oils either, do not fall for the natural is better trap, it really isn't, especially if you have a diagnosed skin issue).

Ditto makeup, avoid common irritants, It Cosmetics CC cream was designed by the founder for people with Rosacea (she has it too).

Ask your GP about prescribing you Soolantra it's a game changer for so many but it's relatively new, not every GP is up to date about it but definitely pursue it because it's made such a difference for so many.

Thank you, I have phoned the doctor and been told I need to make an appointment to alter antibiotics to Soolantra. To say getting an appointment is hard at our surgery, even a phone one, is an understatement. So, it's back to phoning at 8pm and being on hold for an hour on Monday before work...jeez|!

I bought some ‘light cream’ off eBay which does seem to have helped in my case

lacylass · 02/10/2020 19:42

I tried loads of different things for a few year and eventually was given a prescription for tablets...gone within two weeks and has never returned.

SherryPalmer · 02/10/2020 19:46

Soolantra is amazing for clearing up the pustules but you need to use it every evening for about 12weeks for it to start to work. Do not give up on it though, once it starts to work it is a miracle cream.

Wiredforsound · 02/10/2020 22:57

Soolantra. Don’t faff about with anything else. I had rosacea for years, tried everything else Under the sun, and read about it on here. Ordered from an online pharmacy during lockdown and it has worked wonders.

tropicalwaterdiver · 02/10/2020 23:13

I had rosacea and red cheeks and believe it's coming from digestive system rather than from skin reaction to external factors. I have tried many rosacea creams includinb Soolantra privately and nothing helped much. I excluded food I was allergic to and took a supplement for leaky gut and my skin cleared up and pimples and redness gone.

Mamagotskills · 02/10/2020 23:25

What was the supplement @tropicalwaterdiver?

That's interesting...what did you take ? Did you just stop eating certain foods ? I don't really have big postules, more a general redness and teeny tiny under the skin spots. The doctor hasn't actually seen me in person, just a photo, which I don't think gives the best picture of my skin

Soolantra is the go to topical treatment

bagelbaby · 04/10/2020 07:33

SOND products are friend. Soothes and reduced mine

febel · 08/10/2020 20:54

Spoke to doctor (well...clinician ) today on video call, he wouldn't prescribe soolantra. Prescribed a gel which I pick up tomorrow. I was on a 2 month course of Doxycyline but after 10 days have come off, headaches, bloating, feeling sick and anxious....and tbh I would rather not be on antibiotics if I can sort it another way. It;s not super bad, just red and unsightly on my cheeks and nose, luckily no spots ...yet:-(

Was told today not to wear make up but my skin feels worse without it. I went for a walk for an hour and came back and it was really red. Make up seems to protect it. I don't wear loads.....is there a particular brand I should look at for which will be ok (although I don't think the stuff I am wearing irritates it) I don't wear loads but like to look like I have a fairly even skin tone and aren't super pale and ill looking for my work with the public!

Can't believe I have started with this....never had bad skin really....and I think it's hormones (I'm "that" age) V depressing....

....also...cleaners...I have been using Tropic skincare makeup remover, toner and moisturizer (plus no 7 serum ) since April...I used to use it, then didn't, now gone back to it...not sure if I would be worse or better using a different brand....
Would be v grateful for any advice....I am so worried that the rosaccea will get worse...

OP, the Tolariane line by La Roche Posay is definetly worth a try.

I have mild rosacea and this line is great for my skin.
